It really is all about location when it comes to this former dower home, set on a slope right above the east side of Loch Fyne. With a private bay and over fifty acres of estate, it’s a personal haven for anyone looking to explore Scotland at a more mellow pace. 

Though historic – the house was used as a base for the Norwegian commandos who went on the Heroes of Telemark raid during WWII – you’ll likely spend more time outside of the home, but with plenty of windows facing out onto the waters, it won’t be the worst thing if you do find yourself curled up next to the wood-burner with a cup of coffee. With those breathtaking views visible from almost everywhere, including the games room, keep yourselves entertained with friendly table tennis competitions or a few rounds of pool.

When colder days force you away from the bay, pack up your spades and buckets and trade the loch waters for a heated indoor pool. Boost your endorphins in the sauna room every morning before cobbling breakfast together in the generous kitchen, and when you’re ready for adventure, set off for a day trip on the ferry or in search of golf in Tighnabruaich.

This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Peek through the telescope in the lounge and see if you can spot the isle of Arran in the distance. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. Their effect can still be seen today, with tapestries hanging on walls and quirky art pieces - alongside bookcases stuffed with reading material in nearly all the rooms, giving the home a cosy lived-in feel. Spread across five turrets, the space combines castle fantasies with historical touches. Wannabe sleeping beauties will love the four-poster bed in the top room - when you do arise, bathe in the bathroom with its vintage tub and swirling retro wallpaper. Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

Sitting on the southwest coast of Scotland, this home provides the perfect escape for families and friends. It is the perfect spot for parents to relax with a spread of local foods and perhaps a drop or two to drink while the kids play – picnic anyone? And if that wasn't enough, the kids can also bounce their hearts out on the 14-foot trampoline by the edge of the lawns. There's even a campfire area in the woods for toasting marshmallows. Beyond the site, the local area also offers plenty to keep the whole crowd busy, from sprawling coastlines and colourful fishing towns to aristocratic homes – your most difficult decision will be choosing where to visit first.

Perfect for a family retreat, a car is necessary here due to the secluded location – but once here, you can don your hiking boots and stroll the Southern Uplands. If you’re seeking a rural retreat, you really couldn’t be better located – there are fast-flowing burns, vast forests, and the Caerlaverock Castle nature reserve right on your doorstep, where you can discover birds, wildflowers, and wildlife. This 18th century home sits in glorious Perthshire countryside in the hamlet of Monzie. It’s a seven-minute drive to the nearest shops, pubs and coffee shops in idyllic Crieff.
