A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. Walk through ancient forests, cross rolling hills with dramatic views across the Firth of Forth, or stravaig along the two miles of pristine beachfront at Largo Bay. And for somewhere that feels this secluded, you’re just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and less than 15 minutes drive from the medieval town of St Andrews, with its castle and cathedral ruins. On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Despite its rustic charm and rough Scots pine exterior, the cabin has been renovated to create a luxurious home, with antique furnishings, a log fire and vintage art. There's a modern country-style kitchen with everything you could need and two comfortable bedrooms. And who wouldn't fall in love with the huge freestanding copper bathtub in the master bedroom? Outside, hike in the woods, swim from the little jetty, fish in the nearby River Dee or watch wildlife from the veranda – visitors regularly see deer and osprey by the loch. And despite its private setting, this amazing place is just a fifteen-minute walk from the village pub across the river.

This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Fields stretch before you (check out the view from the balcony), yet it’s just three miles to the charming market town of Dunkeld to stock up on supplies and try the local cafes. It’s also a walker and mountain biker’s paradise around these parts – this home has heated bike storage and a boot room. The wood-burner in the living room can warm up frozen toes and the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need to fuel up, post-walk. The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. When evening arrives, head inside for a delicious dinner, followed by a movie night in front of the crackling log burner. 

Uig is an absolute dream for walkers – there's a myriad of trails and routes to suit all different levels, ranging from leisurely strolls around the village to treks across the Trotternish Ridge. Castle Ewen (six-minute drive), The Fairy Glen (eight minutes by car) and the Rha Waterfalls (walkable in twenty) are all must-visits, but for a slower pace, why not relax with a local ale at The Isle Of Skye Brewing Company (ten minutes on foot), which overlooks the sea.

Located just moments from the mythical Loch Ness, this cosy cottage is the country retreat you've been dreaming of. Fire up the wood-burning stove when you arrive and curl up for a memorable weekend in one of the UK's most beautiful landscapes.

The two-person home sits in the charming village of Drumnadrochit, where there are plenty of scenic walks and traditional pubs for you to enjoy. Urquhart Woods is five minutes from your front door, while in half an hour you can reach the crumbling castle that overlooks the lake. Inverness if just thirty minutes up the road, if you feel like breaking up the quiet time with an afternoon in Scotland's northernmost city. 

When you're not exploring, your cottage provides a tranquil haven that's designed for lazy mornings and relaxing evenings. Stick your favourite Netflix show on the TV as you wake up in the plush king-sized bed, and crack open the window so you can listen to the local birdsong. The kitchen is perfect for whipping up quick bites to enjoy at the breakfast bar – come Sunday, the nearest spot for a roast is just across the road.

Coillte Cottage

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days. 

Wood Smoke & Whisky

Embrace the great outdoors at this 1900s lodge set in a secluded coastal estate in Scotland’s lowlands, fringing Portpatrick. With two lochs for boating, wild swimming, hiking, maze running, wildlife tracking, yoga, and beach picnics all up for grabs, there’s plenty to keep you busy here. Although with a breakfast welcome hamper stuffed with local produce and swoon-worthy interiors back at the lodge, what’s the big rush? And you can easily have a night off cooking here with ready-to-eat meals delivered from the estate’s kitchen – you are on holiday, after all.

The Lowlands Escape

If you want to try and spot the ever-elusive Loch Ness Monster, this old stone clergy house that has sat on the banks of the famed body of water for over a century-and-a-half lets you do so in the utmost comfort. Inside, the rooms are filled with varnished wood furnishings, boldly printed rugs and roaring fireplaces — so you can look out the windows at the loch without feeling cold in the slightest. Other noble flourishes come in the shape of the four-poster beds and the two deep claw-footed bathtubs. There's even a small garden out the back, but you're hardly short of beautiful outdoor attractions around these parts. Urquhart Castle is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Dores Beach can be reached in twenty minutes in case you're in the mood for a bracing wild swim. Although the address feels both rural and secluded, the town centre of Inverness only takes seventeen minutes to reach in the car, too.
