New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

Cosy and charming, this home in the Cairngorms National Park is ideal for nature lovers. It looks out over the River Don, where you can fish for trout, and is in a great location for hill walking. It’s a former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century so if you’re looking for glitz and glam, this isn’t the home for you. That said, it’s been recently renovated and has all the contemporary comfort you might wish for. Your four-legged friends can even join you – this is a real home-from-home.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Or go for a hike around the spectacular Cuillin mountain range, 15 kilometres from here. The island's capital, Portree, set around a natural harbour, is also well worth a visit, and it’s 24 kilometres from this stunning home.

The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

Jump in the car, and it takes twenty-five minutes to reach world-famous Loch Ness for some monster-spotting. Even if you don't spy Nessie, you can hop on one of the boat tours to sail along the water, or hit one of the nearby walking trails for an invigorating hike through the Highland landscapes.

Up this far north, it’s untamed Scottish Highlands at its finest. This stone cottage blends in perfectly with the wild countryside around it and there’s a lockable shed to store bikes, kayaks and outdoor adventure equipment so you can make the most of the lochs, rivers and woodlands on your doorstep. The town of Forres is a ten-minute drive away when you need to stock up. The private garden looks out over the rolling hills of the estate this home is set in, which has been owned by the same family since 1738. Inside, you’ll find the perfect blend of rustic cottage charm and modern convenience. The wood-burning stove set in the old hearth is pure tradition, while the kitchen has every appliance and crockery you need for self-catering. If the weather is fine, choose to dine outside on the patio. A world away from the city, the only traffic you’ll get here is the odd pine marten or roe deer passing through the orchard.
