Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread.

It’s a former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century so if you’re looking for glitz and glam, this isn’t the home for you. That said, it’s been recently renovated and has all the contemporary comfort you might wish for. Your four-legged friends can even join you – this is a real home-from-home.

New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

If you’re seeking an escape back to nature that’s a perfect fit for two, it’s time to stop scrolling. We love this former Porters’ Lodge, packed full of character and inviting its guests to unwind. You’ll find this home set on an estate, where you can enjoy the landscaped grounds at your leisure – if you’re not too busy relaxing in your private cedar hot tub, that is. Locally, a hike up the Pentland Hills is a must, and for those seeking a city fix, Edinburgh is a thirty-minute drive away.

This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

Perched between the Scottish Lowlands and the sea on a 2000-acre private estate fringing Portpatrick, the setting of this lodge has to be seen to be believed. It's truly a home for all seasons. Summer nights are all about barbecues, soaks in the outdoor bath, and marshmallow toasting around the firepit. Meanwhile, winter evenings are made for cosying up with hearty meals delivered to your door (available for a fee) after exploring the grounds. There are plenty of on-site activities to take advantage of here, too. Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

Set within a beautiful converted church overlooking the River Ness, this two-storey apartment places you on a quiet road close to everything that Inverness has to offer. An iconic pedestrian bridge offering easy access to the city's shopping and entertainment districts and no fewer than three fantastic restaurants right on your doorstep.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Reclaim the Hills

Experience historic Scotland at its finest at this castle retreat. This beautiful castle was built in 1560 and has been thoughtfully restored to its former glory by the father-and-daughter owner team. You’ll find antique furniture and historic features throughout the castle, but modern home comforts have been added too. Play board games in front of the fire in the Great Hall before sinking into a four-poster Ralph Lauren bed. Explore the Cairngorms National Park and the nearby golf courses, or drive 1.5 hours to Edinburgh for a day trip. This castle is sure to be a memorable choice.

Fields stretch before you (check out the view from the balcony), yet it’s just three miles to the charming market town of Dunkeld to stock up on supplies and try the local cafes. It’s also a walker and mountain biker’s paradise around these parts – this home has heated bike storage and a boot room. The wood-burner in the living room can warm up frozen toes and the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need to fuel up, post-walk. Your host is in the neighbouring farmhouse should you need anything.

Embrace the great outdoors at this 1900s lodge set in a secluded coastal estate in Scotland’s lowlands, fringing Portpatrick. A welcome hamper of bubbly, tea, coffee and toiletries awaits your arrival. Spend the evening outside, gathered around the fire pit, or watching for shooting stars from the comfy sofas on the deck. The peaceful village of Carrbridge has a grocery shop and a handful of cosy pubs. You’re in the Cairngorms National Park here, so you may want to lace up those walking boots and bag some munros, or head to Speyside and sample some of the world-famous whisky distilleries.

The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. Fishing rods and mackerel lines are also available on request. The surrounding area offers many popular destinations such as Inverawe Smokehouse and Shop, Taynuilt village, and Oban, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. Children and dogs are welcome, but guests must be aware that there is a small garden pond at the back of the house and that the property is accessed via a rough forestry track.

Uig is an absolute dream for walkers – there's a myriad of trails and routes to suit all different levels, ranging from leisurely strolls around the village to treks across the Trotternish Ridge. Castle Ewen (six-minute drive), The Fairy Glen (eight minutes by car) and the Rha Waterfalls (walkable in twenty) are all must-visits, but for a slower pace, why not relax with a local ale at The Isle Of Skye Brewing Company (ten minutes on foot), which overlooks the sea.

Get away from it all at this stylish, freshly renovated cottage with its stunning views of the Isle of Skye's countryside and mountains. We love the large, light-filled open plan living room, which is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. The vistas from the large windows are sublime. Gather around the contemporary log burner with a wee dram as the mist rolls in (there's underfloor heating here to keep you toasty as well). There's a lovely terrace off the master bedroom, perfect for a morning coffee. Or, when the weather is sunny, relax in the lawned garden.

When you feel like exploring, Dunvegan Castle and Gardens within the 42000-acre MacLeod Estate is 14 kilometres away. Or go for a hike around the spectacular Cuillin mountain range, 15 kilometres from here. The island's capital, Portree, set around a natural harbour, is also well worth a visit, and it’s 24 kilometres from this stunning home.



Changing Skyes

On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Despite its rustic charm and rough Scots pine exterior, the cabin has been renovated to create a luxurious home, with antique furnishings, a log fire and vintage art. There's a modern country-style kitchen with everything you could need and two comfortable bedrooms. And who wouldn't fall in love with the huge freestanding copper bathtub in the master bedroom? Outside, hike in the woods, swim from the little jetty, fish in the nearby River Dee or watch wildlife from the veranda – visitors regularly see deer and osprey by the loch.
