The popular seaside town of Aberystwyth is less than three miles away where you can enjoy two beaches, a promenade with the oldest pier in Wales, a medieval castle, and a cliff railway with incredible views and the biggest camera obscura in the world. Take full advantage of direct access to the Ystwyth bike trail from the cottage – which links Aberystwyth to Tregaron in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. 

After a busy morning of exploring and sightseeing, we would love to enjoy Welsh cakes from the welcome basket alfresco in the garden. Then, after dinner, unwind in the hot tub with the bottle of prosecco, before cwtching up on the sofa in front of the wood-burning fire.

Situated inside an original Regency harborside house, this first-floor apartment is a fantastic base from which to explore Aberaeron and the surrounding area. The harbor view has to be the main highlight of this property – there's also underfloor heating in the open-plan living room which is a real treat on cold days. The home would be best suited to a couple or small group of friends as there's not a lot of space to spread out in. While the local area can be explored on foot, we'd recommend a car for ease – the nearby towns of New Quay, Aberyswyth, and Cardigan are a short drive away and make for a memorable day trip.

The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. As you can probably imagine when looking out the window, the beach isn't too far away — just five minutes' walk, in fact. Tenby Castle can be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, too.

Nearby Newport beach is perfect for a coastal day before returning home to enjoy the sunset and sea views from the terrace.

Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the centre of Saundersfoot and its beach is all of five mintues' walk from the front door. The town of Tenby is also only ten minutes' drive down the coastline and offers visitors a castle and a selection of galleries to visit.

Just outside the home’s gate, you will find access straight to the estuary which leads to Newport Bay and Parrog – reachable in just twenty-three minutes on foot, which makes it ideal for a leisurely walk together. Then return home in the late afternoon for Welsh cake warmed in the Aga. 

In the evenings, cosy up on the big squashy sofa in front of the wood burner with your dog curled up at your feet as you watch your family's favourite film. Or, on warmer days head out to the patio with a gin and tonic and let the children tire themselves out for bedtime as they run around the lawns.

You’re within walking distance of the beach – the soft sand of Abersoch Bay is three minutes on foot. When Mary Ann Evans paid a visit to this home in 1857, she was inspired to write a novel. A year later, Scenes From A Clerical Life was published under the nom de plume George Eliot and over the course of the next twenty years, she would write some of the most influential books of the period, including Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda.

No pressure to anybody coming to this four-storey, Grade-II listed townhouse in the present day, then. Straight away, you can see why it had the power to rouse dormant literary ambitions — the view from the huge windows of Tenby Harbour is nothing short of sublime. Even though the interior has been updated in the proceeding two centuries, there are still signs of the home's heritage, from the high ceilings and tall windows to the original wooden floorboards in the hallway.

If you ever need a break from working on your manuscript, Castle Beach takes all of a minute to reach on foot, as does the 12th-century landmark that lends the sandy spot its name. Catching the twenty-minute ferry to see the abbey on Caldey Island is well worth doing, too.

The village of Tresaith on the Ceredigion coastline is relatively humble, but you can find some truly spectacular homes here – this three-storey gem is among them.

It's definitely an address that has been constructed with the surrounding scenery in mind, with sea views to be admired from the balconies and out through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Even to the rear of the house that isn't so blessed with coastal vistas, there's a peaceful terrace surrounded by flower beds and it's more than possible to enjoy alfresco feasts in this space, thanks to the dining table, pizza oven and barbecue.

Should the weather ever be a little uninspiring, there's plenty to keep guests entertained inside. In the games room alone, you'll find tables for pool and table tennis, as well as a darts board and piano. Once you've exhausted these, the cinema room complete with leather seats and surround sound is the ideal place to watch a movie or some live sports. It's just as easy to escape to the Jacuzzi bathtub and treat yourself to an unrushed soak.

You'll eventually want to head to the seaside at some point and Tresaith Beach is less than ten minutes' away on foot. It's easy to arrange watersport activities here and – if you're lucky – spot dolphins. There's also a waterfall at the far end of the sand, as well.
