This little cabin makes a great option for anyone seeking a relaxing and romantic getaway. Providing easy access to the Brecon Beacons National Park, this a great spot for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists. It’s worth noting there is one neighbouring lodge located within the same field, but it feels wonderfully secluded. Plus, there’s a sweet terrace and a private hot tub – making it easy to relax and admire the views across the Honddu Valley. Inside, the open-plan living space is simple but you’ll find all the basics needed for a cosy and comfortable stay.

If you’re looking for a remote getaway in the Welsh countryside, then look no further. This collection of three cottages, rented together, in the Brecon Beacons, is surrounded by rolling hills as far as the eye can see. Each cottage is self-contained, so you can have your own space while holidaying as a larger group. Set in open farmland, you’ll have direct access to the farm’s woodland mountain biking trail, as well as local footpaths. And after a day spent hiking or biking, there’s no better place to relax than in the hot tub overlooking the hills.

You won't know which way to turn with the Brecon Beacons' green rolling hills as the backdrop for these three stone cottages on a working farm. Accommodating up to nineteen guests, the two adjoining cottages and one detached cottage are a perfect base for large families and groups of hikers looking for a rural escape to Wales' Epynt mountain ranges. Soothe and soak your aching muscles in one of the two hot tubs or warm up in the sauna after a long day mountain biking or exploring the farmland and woods. Enjoy a drink on the deck whilst the children entertain themselves in the games room and playground. With space for fourteen people at the dinner table, serve up food prepared on the barbecue via the farmhouse style kitchen and come together for convivial hearty meals. As the evening draws to a close, cosy up by the wood burner before heading to one of the quaint bedrooms for a restful night's sleep under the exposed beams overhead, ready for another day full of adventure. With more walking trails and footpaths than you can shake a hiking pole at and within a thirty-minute drive from the ancient castle remains in the spa town of Builth Wells, there's so much to see and do in just about every direction. Secluded yet conveniently located, there's also the 'Town of Books', otherwise known as Hay on Wye to discover, plus the quaint village of Brecon less than a twenty-minute drive from these ever-so bucolic and charming digs.

With the Brecon Beacons National Park on your doorstep for country walks and fishing, the pace of life is slow here. For any more bustle and local amenities, you’ll need to drive to the pretty towns of Brecon and Builth Wells – a short drive away. Though with a private hot tub and south-facing veranda to soak up the far-reaching views over the Honddu Valley at home, we wouldn’t blame you for staying put. If we were being picky, the interiors are a tad dated, and the bathroom is pocket-sized. But we'll let that slide for such a unique location.

From vast moorlands speckled with sheep to the spectacular waterfalls of Fforest Fawr and the wild rugged Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons is home to some of the finest vistas in southern Wales. You’ll find your abode to the north of the National Park, a fifteen-minute drive from the market town of Brecon and twenty minutes from the soaring Pen y Fan. 

After wind-whipped walks along well-trodden footpaths and a plate of pub grub at The White House Inn (a mile-and-a-half away), retreat to the squashy leather couch in your cosy living space. Later on, if you’re feeling peckish, the fully-equipped kitchen has everything you need for rustling up your favourite snacks. When the day draws to a close,  spill onto the patio with a glass of wine in hand and watch the stars appear in the immense sky.

Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. Despite the secluded location, plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. After a hard day of hiking in the hills, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage in the on-site treatment room.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

Once a working dairy, this stone cottage at the foot of the Brecon Beacons encompasses the country idyll. The enclosed garden offers outdoor dining and a place for dogs to run around safely, and you’re on a 12-acre estate with no livestock so there are plenty of walkies for furry friends. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. In the living room, you’ll find everything you need to keep the wood-burning going in the evening and the granite-topped kitchen provides all the appliances and crockery required for self-catering. Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains.

Pen y Fan

This traditional home makes for a lovely base for a family trip to Wales. It’s in the Brecon Beacons, with the River Usk just a few hundred metres away – this is a great setting for hiking, cycling and fishing. You’ll be close enough to Brecon, Builth Wells and Hay-on-Wye for day-trips, and there are local pubs just over a mile away. We love the rural views – is there anything better than sitting outside on a summer’s evening, amid verdant vistas? You can even bring your four-legged friends.

Or go for a hike on the highest peak in South Wales – Pen y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons National Park, is a twenty-five-minute drive from this lovely home.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. If gazing out at the countryside vista inspires you to explore this beautiful county, you're well-placed for bird-spotting and long rambles, perhaps finished with a meal at The Stagg Inn, a well-praised gastropub that sits no more than two minute's walk from your front door.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Rolling countryside as far as the eye can see and quaint villages tucked into the valleys of Monmouthshire on your doorstep – this converted stone barn is an idyllic getaway. It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Searching for somewhere off the beaten track? It’s time to stop scrolling. Nestled in the Forest of Dean, this home has tranquillity at its core. Perfect for a family, four-legged friends included, the fully-fenced garden offers somewhere to sit back and listen to the sound of nature – just keep an eye on children and dogs, as although the trout pond is fenced with gated access, you can never be too safe. Exploring locally, you can take to the trails through the forest where if you’re lucky, you may even spot some wild boar and deer.

With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe.

It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.
