If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

Once a working dairy, this stone cottage at the foot of the Brecon Beacons encompasses the country idyll. The enclosed garden offers outdoor dining and a place for dogs to run around safely, and you’re on a 12-acre estate with no livestock so there are plenty of walkies for furry friends. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. In the living room, you’ll find everything you need to keep the wood-burning going in the evening and the granite-topped kitchen provides all the appliances and crockery required for self-catering. Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains.

Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. Despite the secluded location, plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. This cottage was once the laundry in a manor house built in the fifteenth century and the original castellated archway remains. This is where the large glass doors lead through to the interior, which has been given a contemporary makeover in recent years. Oodles of natural daylight and the bright yellow walls give the space a sunny disposition, while a standalone log-burner will keep you toasty during the colder months. The sleek white kitchen is plenty large enough to make a mess in, while the honey-coloured bathroom looks like it could belong in a spa. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

This home consists of two adjacent half-timbered properties situated in an idyllic rural holiday setting near Pembridge. The house is perfect for large groups of up to 15 guests, with ample space in the dining room when booked together with the cottage. The property features seven well-appointed bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a ground floor shower room. We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

You’ll be a short drive from Ross-on-Wye and close to the Forest of Dean. 

The Peacock House

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight. 


The Austen

Converted from a hayloft in a Victorian stable block, original features like the wooden beams and porthole windows give the space a unique and rustic character. But you’ll still find plenty of modern comforts – the master bedroom features a walk-in dressing room, there's a charming Juliet balcony that opens the living room up to the treetops and there's a new log burner for staying cosy no matter the weather. Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.

The star of the show has got to be the wood-fired hot tub, with views across to the Monnow Valley. Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.
