About five minutes' walk from the Mumbles seafront, this cottage is exactly the sort of cosy place you'll look forward to returning to after a long day out in the open air.

If you're here during the warmer months, you can sit outside and watch the sky go through its daily transformation from the terrace, but if it's too cold to even think about doing that, you can hunker down next to the wood burner in the open-concept living area or luxuriate in the bathtub instead.

The design throughout is classy and uncomplicated, with smart wooden floors, wooden furnishings and chic tiling in both the kitchen and bathroom doing all the heavy lifting. Sometimes, you really don't need to go over the top with it.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, you can reach plenty of attractions on foot, including Oystermouth Castle four minutes away and Rotherslade Bay taking about a quarter of an hour. Even closer than both of those, there's a fish and chips shop at the end of the road, which is sure to come in handy when you're not in the mood to cook.

This wonderful apartment will have the whole family singing its praises after a stay. Located on the ground floor of a large Victorian house, it's the ideal place to call home during a stay on the Gower Peninsul, one of Wales' best-loved spots. 

The house retains much of its original character – you'll love the period fireplaces, patterned floor tiles, and huge bay window that frames the gorgeous sea views. On sunny days, you can head outside for a closer look and sip a cup of coffee on the patio while the kids explore the sprawling shared gardens. When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite dishes in the kitchen to share around the handsome dining table. And, there's no better way to round off an evening than with a singsong around the baby grand piano, or a tune on the Victorian harmonium. 

From here, you can join the coastal path to wander down into the heart of The Mumbles and treat yourself to an ice cream on the beach. Speaking of exploring, take a stroll around the building’s terraced garden, then saunter along the coastal path to Rotherslade (about twenty minutes) where there’s a charming beachside cafe. Returning to this cottage after a brisk seaside walk is a delight, especially with the electric fireplace glowing in the living room. You can watch the waves from the comfy sofa, thanks to the big sash window in the living room. There’s a dining table in here too, or you can opt for the more casual breakfast table in the full kitchen. Upstairs, the sea view continues in plush bedrooms and the loft landing is home to a bean-bag-strewn hang-out den. Just a stroll from Oxwich Bay's long sandy beach, dubbed one of the finest in the country, this spacious home dates back to the 1840s. Extended and smartly modernised over the years, it still retains much of its old-world charm, with wood beams (thought to have been originally taken from a local shipwreck) and a delightful stone fireplace in the cosy living room – perfect for winter escapes. But if you're visiting in the summer months, this home has a rather special feature. In its private, walled courtyard you'll find a heated swimming pool.

Set on the crest of a hill, there are some excellent sea views to be had from the first floor – including from the roll-top bathtub. And there's a large conservatory where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine, with Georgian-style French doors opening out to a lovely sunny patio with outdoor sofas. It’s ideally situated close to the shops, galleries and cafes of the Mumbles, as well as the beach – and there’s even an outdoor shower in the courtyard garden for you to rinse off sandy toes. Get way off the beaten track at this gorgeous former smugglers' cottage on the stunning Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). In fact, it's so off-grid that you'll be required to leave your car in a secure spot and decamp into your host's Land Rover for the final mile, setting off down a rutted path and fording a stream before pulling up outside – setting the tone for an adventurous stay in the Welsh Wilderness.

First appearing in local records around 1700, the original part of this cottage is thought to be considerably older. After all, it wouldn't have served as a store for illicit contraband if its existence was known to everyone. Over time, it's been restored to create a rustic retreat that's equipped with all the mod cons required for a comfortable stay, including underfloor heating, a rolltop bath and an inglenook fireplace.

Another standout feature of this home is the charming cottage garden to the rear. Relax and breathe in the sea air as you sit out and sip a cup of tea out on the wildflower-dotted lawn before helping yourself to some fresh eggs, courtesy of the obliging hens.

The manor house dates back to the 1600s and is elegant and traditional in style, with a large drawing room and a dining space that's big enough for everyone to eat together. There are also plenty of extras that truly give this home the 'wow' factor – you'll love the indoor heated pool, sauna and children's lounge with a pool table and pinball. There's also softball tennis and a skittle alley in the barn, not to mention the indoor balcony with ping-pong and shuffleboard. Outside, you'll find a twelve green pitch-and-put course, along with a field next door for picnics and rambling – there's absolutely no chance of being bored here. We love the coastal, beachy feel, with deep blue furniture and curtains that contrast the pristine white walls. Put the massive kitchen to good use and start preparing a meal for the whole group to enjoy around the large wooden dining table, positioned with beautiful views of the surrounding greenery. Then head out onto the patio for a cocktail alongside the area's striking sunsets. You’ll be just a thirty minutes’ walk to the stunning Three Cliffs Bay – stop at the 12th-century ruins of Pennard Castle on the way, grab a bite at the popular Three Cliffs coffee shop or join the Wales Coastal Path for impressive views. Golfers, hikers and beach-goers will appreciate this wonderfully comfortable base, set in the middle of a gorgeous stretch of countryside and coast.

Jutting off the south coast of Wales, the Gower peninsula was the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it's not just the bucolic landscape that's worthy of praise – homes like this deserve a share of the credit, too.

Hidden away among bucolic south Welsh countryside, the estate on which this chateau-style house sits on dates back to the 14th century. However, those visiting in the 21st century will find a whole host of reasons to fall in love with the property.

Walking around the interior is a bit like wandering about a museum for there are historic features everywhere you look, whether it's the stained glass window, ornate fireplace or Elizabethan-era staircase. The wood-panelled drawing room is a particular favourite of ours, mostly for the fact that it contains a secret door leading to the library.

If we've made it sound fusty and dusty so far, that couldn't be further from the truth. Most of the interior design is fresh and contemporary — the sleek kitchen stands as proof of that — while the number of modern amenities at guests' disposal would put many hotels to shame. Out in the two acres of private gardens, you'll find everything from an indoor swimming pool heated by green energy and a tennis court to a walled garden with a lily pond and a domed folly.

Although you can pass many an hour within the grounds, there are plenty of opportunities for walking and wildlife spotting in the local area, while the Brecon Beacons National Park is only twenty minutes away by car, too.

This cosy cottage is located in the heart of Oxwich village, just a five-minute walk from the glorious beach and sand dunes of Oxwich Bay. Not only is it superbly located, but the home is lovely, from the whitewashed exterior, to the contemporary interior, to the spacious garden. 

We love the subtle coastal theme that runs through this home, creating a light, airy, and comfortable feel to the place. The modernity is balanced out by traditional touches, such as the cast iron log burner, the conservatory, and of course, the country house-style kitchen. It's a sociable space, opening up the floor to chats, board games, drinks, and so on. The conservatory leads you out to the idyllic garden – we can just picture the lovely the breakfasts spreads out in the fresh morning air, sipping on cups of tea while planning the day ahead.

When you've returned home after exploring Oxwich and the wider Gower Peninsula, you'll love relaxing on the plush sofa in front of the fireplace, a well-deserved glass of wine in hand. You could whip up dinner in the kitchen to be enjoyed around the country house-style dining table, or if you don't fancy cooking, make a reservation at the village's Michelin star restaurant for a special treat.
