Though on the smaller side, the all-in-one living/dining/kitchen area still feels bright and roomy. Two extra guests can sleep on the contemporary sofa bed, but we'd say this home is a better base for two. Begin your mornings with breakfast in the bay window before immersing yourself in history at Cardiff Castle, exploring the shops and cafes along the Victorian arcades or taking lunch waterside at Cardiff Bay. For dinner, we recommend grabbing a bite at one of the excellent restaurants, pubs and bars close by, then finish off the evening with a glass of wine in the lounge.

If alfresco dining is out of bounds due to drizzle, the breakfast bar can squeeze everyone around it for indoor meals. While the bedrooms are a little snug – the second requires one guest to climb over the bed to reach their side – they are cosy spots to rest after a day exploring Bute Park and Cardiff city centre (twenty-five minutes on foot or ten by bus). Closer to home, you'll find quaint eateries and cosy pubs just a short stroll away.

Located on the ground floor of a converted Victorian house, this ground-floor apartment has arguably the best position at the address. This is down to the private terrace, accessible through the bedroom's glass doors, which is a lovely place in which to sit and soak up the sunshine on summer afternoons.

The interior escapes the gloomy fate of many a ground floor flat thanks to the skylight above the kitchen, which fills the space with natural light. There's a reassuring quality to the furnishings and fittings, especially the minimalist kitchen and the dark bathroom.

Located on the outskirts of Roath, the local area has a laid-back feel popular with families and young professionals. That being said, the bright lights of the Welsh capital aren't too far away — the restaurants and venues of Cardiff Bay take little over ten minutes to reach in the car.

Set over two floors in a large Victorian house, the home features lots of the owners' finds from across the globe, from crochet rugs picked up in Brazil through to wooden African masks. Pick up books from the shelves and leaf through next to the large sash windows, or simply curl up on the leather sofa for a Netflix movie night. Our favourite space is the attic, reached by a winding staircase with a cosy bed tucked under the rafters and draped in netting — sweet dreams are pretty much guaranteed. The expansive Portcanna Fields are just across the road, while the Principality Stadium is a quarter of an hour's walk if you want to catch a game of rugby.

Compact but practical and modern, this one-bedroom apartment is ideal for everyone from solo nomads on a tour of the UK's castles – Cardiff's lies only minutes away – to romantic weekends in the city and even business trips. Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.
