This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

Within the sprawling grounds of this Georgian manor home, the only neighbours you’re likely to come across are a couple of llamas, ponies and a waddle of ducks. Classic walled gardens, orchards, vast lawns and pastures make up the ten acres of grounds. Exploring, you’ll find a private swimming pool surrounded by rattan furniture for a drink or two and an outdoor bar and cooking area with a wood-fired pizza oven. There’s also a barn that can be dappled with fairy lights for a special celebration and a former coach house that’s been turned into a dedicated cinema and games room. 

Accommodation is spread across the main house, which dates back to the 18th century, and a separate cottage with its own farmhouse-style kitchen and cosy living room. In the main house, the ground floor is everything you expect from an updated Georgian manor – a library-like sitting room, a grand lounge with gilded mirrors and chandeliers, oil paintings adorning the hallway walls, and a big, bright dining and sitting room looking out over the gardens. The kitchen is a vision of farmhouse charm, with a purring Aga at its centre. 

But, we have to say, the real surprise is the subterranean ‘club’ area. Descend the stairs to find a private, fully-stocked bar and VIP-style velvet booths. It’s the perfect place to host a special event without disturbing the neighbours (or lack thereof).

Speakeasy Manor

Once a working dairy, this stone cottage at the foot of the Brecon Beacons encompasses the country idyll. The enclosed garden offers outdoor dining and a place for dogs to run around safely, and you’re on a 12-acre estate with no livestock so there are plenty of walkies for furry friends. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. In the living room, you’ll find everything you need to keep the wood-burning going in the evening and the granite-topped kitchen provides all the appliances and crockery required for self-catering. Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains.

Tucked away is the very best way to describe this neat home in Llandeilo. Accessed through what looks like any other door on the street, it leads through to a hidden mews with outside space. It's here that you'll find your home, complete with its own pebbled courtyard and private ground floor entrance.

Set over two floors, the house has been modernised to create a comfortable, home from home feel. There's a pretty country-style kitchen and an open-plan living space which keeps everything sociable. Upstairs, two cosy bedrooms still show off a little of the building's original structure with wooden beams. Sit outside in the newly renovated courtyard on warm evenings or stroll out into the town to try out some of its excellent eateries. Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons, just a five-minute walk from Dinefwr Castle and a quarter of an hour from the station, it's a great spot. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.
