If you were looking for perfect locations in which to build a home, this spot on the southeastern Peneloponese coastline would be a strong contender. Surrounded by lush vegetation — including trees growing olives, almonds, pears and lemons — it also has the added perk of having direct access to a secluded beach.

Part of a collection of five villas, this home makes the most of its beautiful position with a long terrace area containing an alfresco dining table, a couple of loungers and even a giant chess set. The interior has plenty of glass doors and large windows so you can still marvel at the scenery from inside, too. We're big fans of the decor, which is contemporary in style but subtle and unshowy about it.

As well as Kissakas beach almost quite literally on your doorstep, there are further seaside options a short drive away — like Tserfos just over a quarter of an hour's drive — as well as plenty of hiking routes and the town of Leonidio about fifteen minutes away in the car.

Perched right in front of the sea and offering views of Messinian Bay, this apartment delivers on location. Exploring Kalamata on foot is easy, with local taverns, restaurants, and bars within easy reach. The beach and port are also just across the street. Back home, you can rest your feet in the modern living space. Although the lofted main bedroom is comfortable and contemporary, it isn't the most private since it overlooks the lounge. Guests five and six will also be sleeping on a sofa bed, so we think it's best for shorter trips. Overall, the home lacks some creature comforts – including a washing machine and proper air conditioning – but it's a convenient place to unwind between adventures.

Take the short drive over to Almiros Beach for a dip in the warm Mediterranean then nip over to Kalamata for its picturesque old town, selection of museums and long stretch of golden sand. It's fair to say that each of the Greek islands has a distinct identity and Spetses appeals to those fond of the finer things in life, with plenty of high-end restaurants and boutiques dotted across the map. You'll also find some rather impressive villas, such as this majestic home.

Spread across three floors, the star of the show has to be the swimming pool surrounded by a terrace with loungers on which to dry off after a dip.
