It’s also perfectly positioned to showcase the sun setting over the water – best enjoyed from the terrace with a sundowner in hand. Located within a short stroll of a selection of mini-markets, bars, and restaurants, as well as a pretty pebble and sand beach, you could enjoy a car-free getaway here. Or if you want to explore further afield, Lourdas, Argostoli, and Lixouri are all within easy driving distance.

Sitting just outside Lourdas village, it’s a fifteen-minute downhill walk to the beach – although you may prefer to drive due to the steep uphill walk back. We think the swimming pool is the real highlight, plus two of the bedrooms have access to a private balcony – a sweet option for sunset drinks.

And, the outdoor areas are just as impressive – sip your coffee as you gaze out across the Kefalonian countryside from the terrace, before taking a dip in the swimming pool. There are plenty of loungers where you can catch some rays, and when you get hungry the barbeque is ready to provide a delicious alfresco feast. 

Seaside fans will be delighted that several excellent beaches are close by, including Klimatsias, Pessada, and Spartia, which is under a kilometre away from your front door. Spend a day snorkelling through the crystal clear waters and lazing on the sand, before refueling at one of the local tavernas. And, if you fancy a dose of culture, head to the Monastery of Agios Gerasimos or the Castle of Agios Georgios – both are less than fifteen kilometres away.

With its tiled floors, white walls, and wrought-iron furniture, the open-plan living space is great for some downtime, whether you're eating in the kitchen or watching a movie on the grey sofa. Inside the décor is fresh and functional, providing everything you need for day-to-day life, but we’re not sure you’ll be spending a lot of time in there when the outdoor space is so good. Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful destinations in Greece, and this home is one of the most striking holiday homes we’ve seen. Staying here, you’re able to enjoy all that the island has to offer from a luxurious and serene villa, with your every need catered for. 

The villa has a traditional stone exterior, with stylish touches like floor-to-ceiling windows. Light streams into the home, adding to the subtly tranquil style of the home. Each bedroom has its own special features, be it a private balcony for you to take your morning coffee on, or a rainfall shower that washes away any lingering stresses. 

Outside, the villa’s magic really starts to show. A spacious terrace leads to the inviting infinity pool, which looks out over the lush land below and beyond to the sea. Dining under the pergola is delightful – with a breeze dancing through your hair and the views stretched out before you, it’s impossible not to relax. Another slightly raised space under a pergola boasts comfortable sofas – this is where you’ll want to watch the sun sink in the sky each evening.

This is the Greece from the movies. The ones where heroes swim in azure seas, eat fresh seafood in local tavernas, and fall in love underneath star-strewn skies. While we can't promise the latter, this home's incredible location is sure to blow you away. Blending into cerulean skies and aquamarine waters, the infinity pool is where most of your days will be spent. For a change of scenery, follow the stone path down to the rocky outcrop to dive into the ocean. Your most stressful decision will inevitably be relaxing under the pergola, soaking in the views of Zante, or on the plot's patio, curled up with a good book in the swinging egg chair. Interiors are homely and simple, with muted pastel colours and floral prints. Several of the bedrooms have their own balconies, meaning that you can start each morning admiring mother nature's work. Come dinnertime, the modern kitchen has everything needed for family meals, but we have a sneaking suspicion that most things will be done outside, on the large built-in barbecue.

From the sea views to the sparkling infinity pool, this villa has plenty to write home about. Built on the plot of a former olive grove, the surrounding area is rich in both history and panoramas. The outside space is certainly the star – how could it not be, with the Ionian practically at your fingertips? – but the minimalist interiors aren't too shabby, either. Families will appreciate the ground-floor layout and having en-suite bathrooms in each room. What's more, this is a prime locale for exploring – Paliolinos Beach is about 800 metres away, while Argostoli is a 10-kilometre drive. Factor in add-on services like wine delivery and private chefs, and it's no wonder it stole our hearts.

This home is situated in the village of Spartia – in the Livathos region of Cephalonia – which is famous for its history as a base for sea captains. It is also an ideal location to explore much of what the island has to offer including beautiful golden beaches such as Spartia beach – just a twenty-minute walk away. 

Visit the ruins of the Venetian Castle of Saint George, perched above the village of Peratata – just a twelve-minute drive away. Or, take a longer trip to the charming village of Assos – an hour away by car – to explore the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle, and weave your way through the narrow streets of colourful houses to the taverns on the quayside overlooking a view of the bay. 

In the evening, pick up some local produce from the market that is just a ten-minute walk away from this home. Prepare a meal of delicious traditional Greek dishes in the outdoor kitchen space complete with a barbecue area before dining alfresco under the covered veranda with a panoramic view of the sun setting over the ocean and the outstanding gardens.

Set across one floor, this peaceful villa near Spartia has an open flow between the bright living spaces. The inviting bedrooms each have wrought-iron beds and cooling white walls, providing calming respite after long days in the sun. Our favourite part? The abundance of sliding French doors that lead out to the main attraction, the green gardens with views of the Ionian Sea. A dolphin-shaped pool is all yours, with sun loungers to dry off on. 

The kitchen has a welcoming pine table, but most afternoons will be spent enjoying the vista alfresco, whether you're cooking up a storm on the built-in barbecue or sipping cocktails at the wicker dining set. If you feel the ocean calling, wander down the hill to the rocky outcrop lined with parasols and daybeds and dive straight in.
