Located in peaceful Megalorchori on the island of Santorini, this historic villa offers a relaxing retreat from which to explore the beauty of the village and its picturesque surroundings. 

Dating back to the 19th century, this home was once owned by one of the island’s feudal landlords whose wealth stemmed from the export of Vinsanto wine, which is still produced in Santorini to this day. Traces of the home’s past can be seen in its heavy wooden doors, polished wood floors, vaulted ceilings and the original stone arch in the kitchen. Alongside these historic features, you’ll find contemporary furnishings and modern comforts aplenty – we’re particularly enchanted by the main bedroom’s dreamy four-poster bed.

It’s the home’s outsides, however, that really steals the show. Not only is there a terrace off of the kitchen equipped with a long table and chairs for alfresco meals while looking out onto  Megalorchori’s Venetian bell towers, but there’s a beautiful flower-framed courtyard too where you’ll find a dazzling swimming pool. Spend your days catching some rays on the loungers before cooling off in the water and luxuriating long afternoons away in total serenity.

Situated underneath the Venetian-era Pyrgos Castle in Santorini, it's hard to imagine this beautiful setting being the site of a factory, but rather remarkably, this home has an industrial history. In a former life, the building was used solely for the production of wine and tsipouro.

It has since been refurbished to become a set of four self-contained homes that can be booked out all at once. There are still signs of its history, from the cave-like rooms and the massive piece of machinery that sits in the middle of one of the living rooms. 

However, there are plenty of luxurious touches that have since been added, like the swimming pool and Jacuzzi that sit in the middle of the outdoor space, as well as the dreamy rooftop terrace that looks out over the Aegean Sea and neighbouring islands.

The historic village of Pyrgos has medieval streets and alleys to peek around, as well as a handful of restaurants and the aforementioned castle. There's also an abundance of wineries in the local area if you feel inspired by the villa, as well as Kamari Beach, which can easily be reached with a car.

We love it here in the evening when the garden lights come on, giving this space a magical feel.

If you fancy a day at the beach, Vlychada is just over a mile, while the dramatic black sands of Perissa are just over 2 miles away. For history lovers, Akrotiri, a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement, is a ten-minute drive.

From the moment we saw the views from this villa in the village of Firostefani, we were sold. Endless stretches of blue radiate from all sides, best enjoyed from the terrace and hot tub. There’s an alfresco dining spot too that’s just waiting to be used for Greek treats in the sun, and when the rays get too strong, you can retreat inside amid the villa’s cool whitewashed walls. There are a few signs of wear and tear in the decor and the kitchen is on the small side. But with Fira just a ten-minute walk away, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local fare. And when you’re ready for a dip in the sea, pebbly Gialos Beach is 3.5 kilometres from your door.

There's a long list of things we love about this villa in the middle of Santorini, but perhaps the most unique feature is the miniature church on the grounds — St Catherine's — that allows you to get married and host a reception with up to two hundred guests afterwards.

When it comes to settings for a party, there can't be many that are better than this. Starting with the exterior, there's a large freshwater swimming pool surrounded by loungers and covered terraces, which all enjoy a gorgeous view of a Cycladic hillside. Moving around the side of the address, guests also get the run of a massive lawn with children's play equipment on it.

Inside, the home has been appointed in traditional Santorinian style, with cooling white walls, wooden ceiling beams and bare floorboards. Oddly enough, the only rooms that veer away from this script are the bathrooms, which all have been treated to a quirky range of tiling.

Married in the Morning

When winding up the path to this home, you'll be struck by its traditional beauty. Reminiscent of ancient Greece, the original lime kiln was built by the owner's family over two hundred years ago. Given the rustic look of this stunning villa, you wouldn't expect to see Smeg appliances, Smart TVs, and Simmons mattresses. The blend of the old meets the new is perfectly done. It's chic and comfortable while retaining that quintessentially Santorini charm.

Swing in the hammock, glide through the infinity pool, and lounge as you watch the sun dance on the Aegean Sea. The sea becomes increasingly tempting, you'll probably want to make your way to the lovely Monolithos Beach, a thirteen-minute drive away. Santorini isn't known for its beaches, but you can count on Monolithos for its soft sand, inviting waters, and plenty of sun loungers.

When you get back salty and freckly, you'll fall in love with the home's lime kiln walls all over again. Enjoy a nice, refreshing drink on the outdoor sofas as you watch the sun dip into the Aegean's inky waters, leaving the sky in pink and orange hues in its wake. When it comes to dinnertime, Santorini isn't short of restaurants. The closest being around seven minutes away by foot – enjoy all of the souvlaki, moussaka, and dolmades that your stomach can muster.

This haven of elegance and luxury is one of the biggest private villas on Santorini. Along the walking trail between Oia and Fira, this home sits in Imerovigli – a village of white buildings with blue domes cascading down the hillside. The exterior is an ode to Cycladian architecture, blending in with Santorini’s pristine white buildings. Cobbled paths lined with olive trees lead to the sprawling terrace, which has panoramic views of the caldera where the Aegean meets the horizon. Choose to spend your time in the shade of the pergola, on plush sofas, or cooling off in one of two swimming pools. There are myriad seating areas outside to enjoy the view, perfect with a sundowner from the bar (stocked daily). 

Dining can be an indoor or outdoor experience, with glass sliding doors opening the space up to the terrace, and a fireplace keeps this spot warm in the cooler months. Breakfast is included. Inside, you’ll find two full kitchens so there’s no trouble cooking for the whole group. Lounge areas upstairs and downstairs let the group spread out, and are designed with nature in mind – think raw wood accents, earthy tones and boho-luxe furnishings. There’s also a gym if you want to keep on top of your fitness regime.

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Vothonas, this traditional white-washed villa blends beautifully into the dwellings of this charming village setting. Over the patio garden wall, you'll even see one of the quintessentially Santorini windmills peaking out across the street. 

While the villa may be compact, it provides an idyllic base from which to explore the island of Santorini. Outside, you’ll find a terrace complete with a pool and knockout views of the Cretan Sea. Spend the day lolling about on a lounger, watching over the Venetian Castle and basking in a gentle ocean breeze. When you’re ready to explore your surroundings, the Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri is just a short walk from your doorstep, or hop across to Caldera Beach, an excellent spot for snorkelling.

Inside, you'll find an open-plan living area with neutral tones that creates a calming atmosphere. Location-wise, the villa is within walking distance of restaurants and only a short drive from Kamari Beach, just 4km away.

Sweet Celestial

Thanks to a prime hillside position in the middle of Santorini, this villa is treated to beautiful views of the sparkling Aegean Sea as far as the eye can see. Thankfully, there are plenty of spots where you can just sit and drink in this panorama, whether it's lounging about in the shade of the covered balcony or cooling off from the midday sun in the infinity swimming pool.

Given this sublime scenery, you might perhaps be forgiving if the actual home itself had a few shortcomings, but, rather remarkably, the interior lives up to the exterior. In the open living space, the stark white walls, gold oversized light fixtures and striking collection of artworks feel very en vogue, although the large kitchen with glossy white surfaces means that it's far from a case of style over substance.

When you want to do a little exploring, the whitewashed architecture of Pyrgos takes just over a quarter of an hour to reach on foot and offers shops, restaurants and a castle. What's more, the seaside town of Kamari and its beach is only a ten-minute drive away, too.

Perched above Santorini's western coast, this Cycladic-inspired home is perfect for sunset lovers who value peace and tranquillity above all else. You'll enjoy stunning views of the Aegean Sea from the pool and terrace, while the calm, minimalist interior is perfect for afternoon naps. With the second bed lacking space, the home best suits couples or those travelling with children. Although there's no kitchen here, a short stroll will bring you to local eateries, and the central location means you're just a short drive from many sandy beaches and beautiful bays.

Tucked away on the hillside of the traditional village of Exo Gonia, this two-storey villa offers absolute tranquillity. The spacious veranda opens onto breath-taking views of the sparkling blue Aegean and out to the island of Anafi. We found that even the most captivating book couldn’t keep our attention for long – eventually our eyes would drift from the page out to sea again. 

Natural materials and a minimalist style mean that this villa blends with the beautiful surroundings while also offering every comfort. There’s a warmth to the decor that adds to the feeling of calm. 

Despite feeling a million miles from the hustle and bustle, this property is reassuringly close to everything you might need to enhance your stay. Supermarkets, coffee shops and bakeries are all within striking distance, so you can easily begin your day with a pastry on the veranda. Pyrgos village, a real haven of traditional architecture and unspoiled beauty, is just a seven-minute ride, while beaches like Kamari and Perivolos are five and fifteen minutes away. For vibrant nightlife, Fira is less than a ten-minute drive. 

For those evenings when you want to soak up the zen atmosphere of the villa, why not book a private chef to cook for you? Or fire up the barbecue so you can spend an extra hour in the pool, relaxing with the whirlpool jets.

While the pool and jacuzzi are obvious highlights, we love how the extra services – including daily breakfasts and free airport transfers – make your holiday stress-free. Within walking distance, stumble across restaurants, wineries, and Pyrgos Kallistis Castle.

Tucked away in the traditional village of Pyrgos, this contemporary villa offers the quieter side of Santorini. Sectioned off into a villa, guest house and studio apartment, this home is ideal for larger groups who want the option of privacy. Boasting an array of luxurious amenities from the private infinity pool to the wine cellar, our favourite feature is the spa room which comes complete with a hot tub and fitness equipment. Spectacular views over the Aegean Sea can be enjoyed from the plush sun beds or alfresco dining terrace, and there are some beautiful beaches within an easy distance.

Overlooking the sparkling Aegean Sea, this home enjoys an enviable location in the heart of Santorini. It should come as no surprise that the outside space is the standout here, boasting a private swimming pool and plenty of seating for sitting back and soaking up the view. That being said, the interior is nothing to scoff at either, offering plenty of privacy thanks to its unique, split-level design. Whether you’re travelling with a handful of friends or the whole family, you won’t be short on living space here. 

Small and scenic, Santorini is easy to get around without the help of a car, though we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to hire one to explore the island at your own pace. Drive to the nearest beach and settle in for an afternoon of sunbathing, embark on a hike across Nea Kamen volcano, or head into Pyrgos Kallistis and practise your Greek with the friendly locals.
