Thankfully, it's only 2km away and has a wealth of historic architecture, museums and restaurants that warrant multiple trips. It's also fair to say that this corner of Crete isn't short of sandy beaches, either.

The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.
