Surrounded by verdant hillside olive groves and overlooking the north Cretan coastline, we were tempted to include this home in our collection based on its scenic location alone. Thankfully, the well-put-together interior and outside amenities mean the villa would get a pass regardless of its prime spot on the map.

There's a contemporary feel to the design, with walls decked in svelte pastels and Scandi-esque furnishings to a kitchen dominated by sleek surfaces and an equally glossy set of bathrooms. We also like the fact that all but one of the bedrooms has a private balcony on which to take a seat and gaze out over the landscape.

When it comes to those scorching hot afternoons, the villa's private swimming pool is sure to be appreciated, especially the shallow children's section if you're travelling with little ones in tow. The selection of loungers lets you soak up some rays, while the built-in barbecue area and alfresco table are ready and waiting for feasts out in the open air.

In local Gerani, there's no shortage of ways to fill up an itinerary, from visiting sandy beaches and the local cave to hiking through the local hills. As well as that, the city of Rethymno and its historically varied architecture lies only 10km down the coastline.

Relax in the Crete sun by the private pool – we love the beautifully maintained garden with its vibrant flowers and verdant hedges. Later in the day, watch the rich sun set over the sea from the large balcony with a glass of wine. 

Inside, exposed stone, beams and arches create an atmospheric space, especially at night, and several sofas accommodate your family or friends for a good chat before dinner.

Situated in a cul-de-sac, it’s a leisurely stroll to the village centre, where there is a mini market and a choice of tavernas and cafe bars if you prefer to eat out. Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.

Set overlooking rugged green hills covered in gnarled olive trees, fragrant cypresses and sturdy oaks – it's a tranquil haven that's ideal for a restorative break from your everyday routine. 

This imposing stone structure is one of four to inhabit this little corner of Crete, each with its own pool and tree-lined borders to maximise privacy. There are plenty of poolside sun loungers where you can spend lazy days, only interrupting your sunbathing sessions for cooling dips in the water and light bites at the outdoor dining area.

Inside, you'll uncover a similar traditional style to the exterior, with plenty of exposed stone, dark wood floors and furnishings, plus elegant wrought-iron beds. This home's proximity to the beach (just 250 metres away) makes it a stand-out. Private access is via pretty steep steps, and it’s shared with the villa next door, but you can't beat having the sea that close. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.

This home is designed to make the most of the gorgeous weather, with an outdoor pool for cooling off and plenty of loungers for topping up your tan. We love the balcony, providing picturesque views of the sea in the distance. Interior-wise, a couple of sofa beds means ten guests could fit – although it'll be a squeeze. And while it may not have the swanky contemporary style or the quaint charm of some other villas on the island, we think it's a joyful place to make some happy holiday memories.

When you need to stock up, the city centre of Violi Haraki is just 4 kilometres away, while your host can book treats like a private chef or massages should you want to indulge yourselves.

Modern and inviting, this villa is great for large groups. There’s plenty of room inside and out for everyone to gather – though with only four bathrooms, there might be a bit of a queue for showers. Best of all though, this home has views for days. It looks out over the Cretan Sea and has been designed to make the most of its seafront position. Whether you’re swimming in the heated pool, playing with the kids in the playground, or indulging in a spot of yoga on the terrace, your gaze will be drawn to the vistas. That being said, there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding streets if you don't fancy cooking, as well as lots of historic attractions lying within walking distance to keep you busy.
