Surrounded by verdant hillside olive groves and overlooking the north Cretan coastline, we were tempted to include this home in our collection based on its scenic location alone. Thankfully, the well-put-together interior and outside amenities mean the villa would get a pass regardless of its prime spot on the map.

There's a contemporary feel to the design, with walls decked in svelte pastels and Scandi-esque furnishings to a kitchen dominated by sleek surfaces and an equally glossy set of bathrooms. We also like the fact that all but one of the bedrooms has a private balcony on which to take a seat and gaze out over the landscape.

When it comes to those scorching hot afternoons, the villa's private swimming pool is sure to be appreciated, especially the shallow children's section if you're travelling with little ones in tow. The selection of loungers lets you soak up some rays, while the built-in barbecue area and alfresco table are ready and waiting for feasts out in the open air.

In local Gerani, there's no shortage of ways to fill up an itinerary, from visiting sandy beaches and the local cave to hiking through the local hills. As well as that, the city of Rethymno and its historically varied architecture lies only 10km down the coastline.

With this luxury villa's typically Greek whitewashed exterior, you'd be forgiven for expecting a traditional take on modern, but the open-plan living room in this home has a distinct mid-century meets warehouse style. Outside is where the real magic happens though – we love the Cretan countryside and sea views that greet you as you step onto the terrace, beyond the azure pool. If the sizzling sun gets too hot, recline on a sun lounger under the sail shades. For lunch, enjoy a feast in the garden with goodies from the local bakery in Gerani Village, a ten-minute walk away. It's the same distance to beautiful Gerani Beach if you fancy feeling its warm, golden sand between your toes – utter bliss.

With room for up to twelve guests, it’s a great space to enjoy with your loved ones. Certain aspects of the home, such as the kitchen, feel very traditional but don’t be fooled into thinking it doesn’t have much on offer. There are lots of areas to relax around the poolside, including a hammock and hanging chair, and you’ll be treated to views of the Aegean from the balcony. Your host is able to arrange a variety of extras to make your holiday even more special – whether you fancy a massage, a meal cooked by a private chef or night out while someone else looks after the kids, it's all possible.

This beautiful, traditional stone house on the edge of Prines, set on a gentle, west-facing slope, has wonderful mountain and sea views. Relax in the Crete sun by the private pool – we love the beautifully maintained garden with its vibrant flowers and verdant hedges. Later in the day, watch the rich sun set over the sea from the large balcony with a glass of wine. 

Inside, exposed stone, beams and arches create an atmospheric space, especially at night, and several sofas accommodate your family or friends for a good chat before dinner.

Situated in a cul-de-sac, it’s a leisurely stroll to the village centre, where there is a mini market and a choice of tavernas and cafe bars if you prefer to eat out. Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.

This home's proximity to the beach (just 250 metres away) makes it a stand-out. Private access is via pretty steep steps, and it’s shared with the villa next door, but you can't beat having the sea that close. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.

This imposing stone structure is one of four to inhabit this little corner of Crete, each with its own pool and tree-lined borders to maximise privacy. There are plenty of poolside sun loungers where you can spend lazy days, only interrupting your sunbathing sessions for cooling dips in the water and light bites at the outdoor dining area.

Built from carefully selected local stone and wood, the villa is very much in keeping with its surroundings and almost blends into the background from afar, despite its size. Not only does this hilltop villa close to the northern coastline of Crete gaze out over the deep azure Cretan sea, but you can also spot the city of Rethymno and its medieval citadel while standing in the garden.

This glorious backdrop makes it a pleasure to pass hours in the home's two acres of verdant grounds, whether that's paddling in the swimming pool with an adjoining children's section, playing a little ping-pong on the terrace or enjoying dinner fresh off the barbecue on the alfresco table. It probably won't be a surprise to learn that this beautiful outdoor space can be used for weddings or events.

When you eventually head inside, you'll be pleased to discover a thoroughly contemporary interior filled with natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors, plus chandeliers and a fireplace to light up once the sun goes down for the night. The red kitchen is both striking and sleek, as is also the case with the master bedroom's en-suite bathroom and its sunken tub complete with a sea view.

After looking out to Rethymno for so long, you'll probably want to pay the city a visit. When you need to stock up, the city centre of Violi Haraki is just 4 kilometres away, while your host can book treats like a private chef or massages should you want to indulge yourselves.

In terms of location, you’re a twenty-minute drive from the Venetian ruins and pristine sandy beaches of Rethymno, but there are hiking trails to explore on your doorstep if you fancy.

From the outside, the sandy stone and rich wooden shutters contrast beautifully against the aquamarine private pool, while poolside olive trees bring an earthy hue into the colour palette. And inside, traditional elements reign supreme, with flagstone flooring to glide across, and wooden ceilings beckoning you to look up. You don't often get views like this, so take a moment to appreciate the panoramas from the many terraces. Mornings call for coffee and fresh fruit – maybe even a mimosa if you're feeling fancy – before heading down to the plunge pool for a dip in the sunshine. Later on, as the day slowly comes to an end, get together for a barbecue and watch the stars pop out over the mountaintops.

Even inside, the scenery is front and centre, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. With its vaulted timber ceilings and exposed stone walls, the living area feels like a great hall in the days of old – and the open-plan layout means you can chill out on the sofa, convene around the table and cook up a storm without missing a beat in the conversation. A separate office has worker bees covered, while the cosy and charming bedrooms are a restful retreat after a long afternoon. Our favourite bit? The telescope, which makes both birdwatching and stargazing a dream.

When you're ready to venture out and about, Rethymno is about 15 kilometres away – the Venetian harbour, 19th-century lighthouse, and traditional tavernas make it an ideal day trip. You're also a fifteen-minute drive from a sandy beach.
