This villa is a really special home. It can be found in Machairado village – an almost untouched part of Zakynthos at the heart of the island. The home is on a vast plot of land, tucked away amid acres of lush greenery so if peace and quiet are what you’re craving, you’re in luck. 

You could easily spend your whole stay on the property, with your every need catered for. Hire a private chef and enjoy your meals at any one of the many dining areas in the grounds – we’re particularly fond of the tables on the covered terrace, where you can shelter from the midday sun and still enjoy the views all the way to the mountains. A huge brick barbecue sits alongside its own bar area to the side of the pool, the perfect setting for celebrations. 

The heart-shaped pool takes pride of place at the centre of the outside space. The hydro-massage jets mean it’s a hub of relaxation. After a morning spent floating and feeling your worries melt away, head to the tennis court. There’s also table tennis, a basketball hoop and billiards, so nobody is likely to feel bored. 

If you do feel the urge to explore beyond the gates, you can be in Zakynthos town in just fifteen minutes. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars and activity, and you can be back in time to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets.

We love the location of this holiday home, which is 50m from Agios Sostis beach, putting sun, sea, and sand within easy reach. Back at the villa, there’s a palm-fringed pool (long enough to swim lengths), plenty of loungers for lazy afternoons, and space for alfresco meals on the terrace. If eight of you are staying, two will sleep on the sofa bed, but we think that’s a minor compromise to stay in such a great spot. Along with the beach, you’ll find tavernas, markets, and bars within walking distance – all the essentials for an enjoyable trip.

You’ll find the town centre and its buzzing nightlife only a short drive away, and you can spend the next day rehydrating in the shade of a beach umbrella on Tsilivi. Or, if it’s caffeine you need, take a short stroll to one of several coffee shops and bakeries nearby. Although spacious enough, the house isn’t large, so when you need a little extra breathing room, venture into the garden or open the bifold doors separating the living room from the swimming pool for fresh air.

Surrounded by the Ionian Sea, you're not exactly short of places to go swimming in Zakynthos, but a villa with a private pool is just too good an opportunity to pass — especially when it's among such beautiful surroundings as this. With two open-plan living areas, you can break off into smaller groups before coming together at the shaded outdoor dining area overlooking the sea – book a chef through your host and spend more time with a cocktail in hand. Each bedroom features a view of the ocean or the garden, meaning everyone is happy with the sleeping arrangements. And although we wouldn’t blame you for staying at home the entire time, nearby you’ll find the home of famed poet Dionysios Solomos, perfect for literature buffs. For everyone else, the nearest beach is just over half a kilometre away.

The Archangel

Perched on top of a cliff at the northern tip of Zakynthos, this villa has the sort of view that has the power to bring about a reverent silence as you try to take it all in — from here, you can see Kefalonia,  the Peloponesse shoreline and a vast expanse of sparkling Ionian Sea.

Thankfully, this home makes it pleasingly easy to admire this landscape. Slipping into the infinity pool with a built-in hydromassage area is one way of doing just that, but the surroundings are no less awe-inspiring from the home's terrace or alfresco dining area.

The home itself has been built in the traditional Zakythinian style, with stone walls, wooden ceiling beams and a fireplace in the living room. The galley kitchen has enough space to whip up a Mediterranean banquet, too.

One of the major perks that we should probably mention is that there's direct access to the sea via a stone path and you can borrow kayaks or snorkelling and fishing equipment, as well as binoculars, a telescope and gym equipment. The island's famous Blue Caves can be reached in ten minutes on foot, too.
