With the peaceful sound of the birds singing in the garden and the calming tone of the interior, this home welcomes you to enjoy a serene stay on the island of Oléron. 

Located in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, with the beach just a short drive away, there’s everything you could need to experience the natural abundance of the Charente-Maritime region. Inspired by the beauty of the surrounding coastline, the owners have styled this home to feel like the perfect island escape. And with the welcome addition of a private heated swimming pool, you’ll find yourself transported to a wonderful state of relaxation. 

Inside or outside, this is a wonderful place to gather with family and friends. Enjoy a quiet morning coffee on the terrace, take a refreshing dip and gather for sunset drinks and meals (prepared with fresh local produce from the nearby market). However you choose to spend your time here, you’ll find yourself serenaded by the sweet charm of French living. 

Days can be spent hiking, sightseeing, horse riding or setting sail with a boat trip around the island. The renowned Chassiron lighthouse is just a short drive away, and you’ll find restaurants, bars and shops within easy reach – your lovely host can also provide excellent recommendations on what to do during your stay.

Sitting within a 100-hectare estate that dates back to the 18th century, this marvellous home was once the residence of an important general during conflicts following the French Revolution. Given this impressive heritage, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that the interior still retains a sense of grandeur. However, don't confuse this with dusty and staid – as the locals might say, there's a joie de vivre to be discovered at the address.

Much of this is down to the interior design, which mixes together antique furnishings, bold print wallpaper and portraits hanging in every room. We love the lavish dining table set under a chandelier, but also appreciate the modern additions as well – we're fairly sure the aforementioned general didn't have the games room to keep him occupied while he was holed up here, but we're willing to stand corrected.

It's a similar story outside. The well-kempt gardens and rosebeds make for a charming backdrop as you stroll about the grounds, but you're also more than welcome to take a dip in the swimming pool or play a match or two of tennis on the private court. There's equipment for badminton or volleyball too if they're more your sport.

There's a lot to discover in the surrounding Vendée, as well. The sweeping beaches on the Pays de la Loire coastline start from as close as 30km away, while galleries and restaurants in the vibrant city of Nantes lie 43km to the north. A little closer to home, the nearest village is 2.5km away and has a pair of bakeries, a supermarket and a restaurant to tide you over.

It may be dated, but this converted barn in the French countryside has rustic charm in spades. The cosy lounge is great for families – with a pool table and a sofa bed for two extra guests, it acts as a games room by day and an additional bedroom come evening. There isn’t wi-fi here, so be prepared to switch off. But, as Charente-Maritime is known for sunshine, you'll have plenty of opportunities to splash in the private heated pool and dine alfresco in the sprawling garden. For adventures further afield, Saintes has cafes and weekly markets (10 kilometres away) or drive thirty minutes to visit sandy beaches and Cognac distilleries.

Spend your days in the 17th-century conversion – when you’re not off exploring historical sites or teeing off at any of the three surrounding golf courses – by doing as much or as little as you’d like.

Read sprawled out on the sofa, only moving to top up your coffee, or take your reading outdoors, keeping your nose in a novel as you relax poolside. With this region being amongst the sunniest in France, you can expect beautiful weather all year round – perfect for a swim and some sunbathing. 

Pack snacks and wine and walk around the 12 acres of parkland in search of the perfect spot for a picnic. Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, exploring beaches and towns nearby. Just because this home isn’t a wine press anymore doesn’t mean there aren’t any in the surrounding area, so venture out to visit some of the wineries, coming back with a few of your favourite vintages.

This home is a wing within a stunning 13th-century chateau in the glorious Pays de Loire. It’s on the outskirts of the tiny village of Sèvremont so you can walk to a chemist, bakery and supermarket. That being said, all the basics are nailed, too – the tiled kitchen has lots of sleek surface space and equipment for whipping up some tasty home-cooked fare.
