And, while the main bedroom is on a mezzanine and the third guest will be on the single sofa bed in the living room – meaning privacy is limited – for a short city break, there's a lot to be said for it. When we came across this three-story townhouse, it immediately caught our attention. Set in the heart of the old town, with the Basilica of San Nicola and the Castello Svevo just a short walk away and endless cafes, bars, and restaurants to choose from, you truly have it all at your fingertips. Set across three floors, with a private rooftop terrace offering views over the surrounding scenery, an outdoor kitchen and shared beach access, there's a lot to love about it. Just bear in mind that the internal staircase is not for the faint of heart – especially if you're travelling with lots of luggage in tow.

We reckon you'll spend most days floating in the pool, dining on the extensive terrace, or swinging in the hammock under the olive trees. Each bedroom leads onto a terrace and offers views of the surrounding woodlands or the sea. You can spend your afternoons relaxing in the private pool and evenings dining alfresco on the terrace. There's no shortage of spots to relax with a glass of wine, either – and the Adriatic views are the icing on the cake. Location-wise, you'll find Monopoli and Polignano a Mare less than a twenty-minute drive away.

Built on three levels, this villa has panoramic views of the garden and the countryside from the upper-level terraces. We love the pool surrounded by daybeds and a pergola-shaded dining area (there’s a vineyard within the grounds as well). Inside, there’s plenty of room for entertaining. All bedrooms are en-suite and four have access to a private terrace (at full occupancy some guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in two of the bedrooms). Also, one bedroom is in a separate building on the roof terrace, perfect for those wanting more privacy. You may not want to leave this oasis of calm and luxury, but if you do, you’ll find the charming town of Polignano a Mare, 6 kilometres away.

Step in off the narrow cobbled street and discover the charms of its recently renovated interior, which winds up through the home and includes a cosy sitting room and bedroom that share a soothing blue theme and a compact but well-equipped kitchen. 

However, it's in its outside space that the home really comes alive. With good weather all but guaranteed over the summer months, you'll be spending most of your time relaxing in the dappled shade of the covered terrace and topping up your tan on the rooftop terrace, with its far-reaching sea views.

Polignano a Mare's historic centre is the perfect size to explore on foot, making requisite stops at various viewpoints dotted throughout the town. Once you've seen the sights, refuel in a quaint kerbside cafe before making your way down to the pebble beach at Lama Monachile. Nestled between steep limestone cliffs, it makes for an idyllic dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic.

You can't come to the heel of Italy without factoring in a visit to the iconic cone-shaped trulli homes that line the streets of Istrian Valley towns like Alberobello. Meanwhile, the spectacular city of Matera is known for its ancient cave dwellings and, most recently, for featuring in a Bond film.

Inside, you’ll find everything you need for a fuss-free stay, although with only one bathroom, you might have to join the queue for a shower in the morning. You’re well placed for daytrips here too, with the coastal towns of Molfetta, Barletta, and Bari all within easy driving distance.
