Vaulted ceilings and original tiles underfoot are a nod to this 18th-century home’s former glory, and keep things naturally cool inside. Each bedroom has its own style and there’s a dedicated office room for those working remotely. But it’s the outdoor space that captivated us, with a big swimming pool carved from local stone and loads of comfortable places to catch the sun (or laze in the shade) on patios and terraces. This villa is in the centre of Diso, a historical Salento village two kilometres from the sea with a small shop and cafes within walking distance. 

Majestic Haven

Perched atop a cliffside in the picturesque town of Castro, this home offers a memorable seaside escape for those seeking a little mindfulness and some spectacular views. Its large outdoor areas allow for groups to congregate and mingle, making it perfect for family reunions and friendly get-togethers. 

Wake up to the sound of waves crashing on the stones below, before grabbing your first espresso of the day and looking out over the turquoise waters. In the evenings, enjoy a glass of fine wine on the terrace as you watch the night descend over the Adriatic.

Once you’re suitably settled, take the seven-minute walk to the centre of Castro and indulge in its delicious locally-sourced seafood after a day of shopping or bar hopping. By car, you’re just a forty-five-minute drive from the beautiful city of Lecce – home to magnificent baroque buildings, you’ll quickly discover why it’s referred to as ‘the Florence of the South’.

Even before you arrive at this striking and historic masseria farmhouse, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Located close to ancient gates that were built to protect the medieval town of Galatina from attack and with areas dating back to the sixteenth century, Torre Galatina really gives off a sense of history and laidback grandeur. Summer days can be spend outdoors in the pretty gardens and plenty of charming chill-out zones. And let’s not forget about the 16th-century tower that houses a tasteful bedroom, private living area and terrace. We particularly enjoyed gazing at the scenic views from here.

Just a few minutes from the sea, in the charming town of Castro, you'll find this abode. The true highlight here is the mini-pool and solarium that act as an oasis for those seeking peace and privacy. That said, the water is just a short stroll downhill, or, if you hop in the car, it's just a five-minute drive. Well-placed for discovering Baroque towns and cities such as Otranto and Lecce, this is a solid shout for families and groups of friends alike.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

This villa sits just above Puglia’s coast, with a view out over the sea from the suntrap of a rooftop terrace, lounger-strewn lawn and from the cooling water of the private pool. What’s more, steps lead directly from the garden to a swim platform on the Ionian Sea and there’s beach club next door – just remember it’s a steep way down, so it’s steep back up again. It’s fairly minimalist inside, keeping things breezy and cool (just what you want in the Puglian heat). The kitchen is on the rustic side. Bedrooms are simple and comfortable, and they all face the sea.


Steps to the Water

With direct access to the Adriatic sea via a staircase right outside your apartment, and a spectacular view of the Azure water from the spacious terrace, this three-bedroom home is an Italian dream come true. Cross the threshold and you’ll immediately see what we mean – it’s hard not to be drawn instantly to the terrace, where a large dining table and lounge suite beckon you in for an afternoon charcuterie board or evening cocktail. Inside, three bedrooms and two bathrooms await upstairs, while the lower floor promises a comfortable living room and a fully equipped kitchen. This is southern Italy at its finest – right on the water.

This small but cosy villa is full of character and a relaxing base for families exploring the best of Puglia. It's surrounded by a lush garden with a hammock and ample dining areas, perfect for long alfresco meals after exploring the local area. There's even an indoor gym so you can stick to your workout routine, even on holiday. The historic city of Ostuni and the Merlata coast are a short drive away and this home also comes with bicycles so you can explore the Puglian countryside and neighbouring villages at your own leisure.

This villa can be found in a quiet village, between the Gagliano de Capo countryside and the historic old town, and could not be more perfectly placed for soaking up the very best of Italy.
