The rustic interiors won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but the private swimming pool and manicured garden guarantee a relaxing stay. If you find yourself in the mood for socialising, the large outdoor dining area is the perfect place for an alfresco dinner. The location is fairly remote and well suited to those who are keen to explore the countryside and vineyards, but if you are looking for a day trip, Lucca isn’t too far away.

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Located just outside the medieval town of Vinci, the birthplace of the town's most famous son is within easy walking distance of this charming villa. Inside, the home takes inspiration from Leonardo, with thoughtfully curated paintings adorning the walls, wicker sofas in the living room and beautifully carved wooden beds. When in Tuscany though, outdoors is always best. Set atop a hill, you'll take in panoramic views of alluring landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. Cool off with a few casual laps of the private courtyard pool, surrounded by aromatic herbs, colourful flowers and centuries-old olive trees. This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.
