There are a lot of things we like about this lodge in the Alpine village of Cortina d'Amprezzo, but we'd be lying if we didn't single out the rather lovely view from the balcony as our standout highlight – from this spot, it's possible to gaze out over the locale's rooftops and dramatically beautiful mountains beyond.

Back inside, the interior design is as rustic as you might imagine, with an abundance of wood in everything from the walls and floors to the furnishings and finishes. A few pieces of artwork and natural decorative items lend a little character, while the horseshoe-shaped kitchen has enough space for cooking up hearty dinners when you're fresh off the slopes.

Ah yes, skiing – there's plenty of opportunity for winter sports here, with lifts up to the slopes lying within walking distance. Even closer, there are restaurants, shops and a museum within the town to explore.

It's safe to say we wouldn't recommend leaving here without going on a wine tour and tastings of one of the local Prosecco vineyards either.

After days spent out in the cold, you can come inside into the cosy warm interiors of this traditional lodge, with welcoming vibes that make you feel right at home. You can cook up lovely hot soups in the kitchen to warm your cockles, and tuck in all together in the quaint dining area. There's also a bathtub where you can soak tired muscles, and big comfy beds so everyone can get a great night's sleep, ready to go exploring again the next day.

Sitting right in the middle of the Alpine town of Cortina D'Amprezzo, this recently refurbished apartment has a rather suave style that piqued our interest, not to mention some pretty views of the local town and the surrounding mountainsides that you can enjoy from the small terrace. We won't lie, we've seen bigger kitchens and bedrooms, but we'd be willing to overlook this, particularly as the lifts to both Tofana and Faloria ski slopes lie so close to the front door. Oh, and did we mention that there's a sauna to warm up in afterwards? Well, there is.

This is a beautiful agriturismo that consists of six houses in the hamlet Belvedere di Povoletto, just 2.5 km from the centre of Povoletto and 10 km from Udine. The residence is set within a large, well-kept garden with a swimming pool that's perfect for cooling off during the warmer months. The property also offers a storage room for bicycles and a washing machine for shared use. Guests can enjoy horse riding lessons on request and payment, while children up to 12 years old can experience horse riding free of charge. The 3-room house is spacious, renovated, comfortable and tastefully furnished, with a living/dining room featuring an open-hearth fireplace and satellite TV, as well as a fully equipped kitchenette. The upper floor includes one double bedroom with sloping ceilings, one room with sloping ceilings with two beds, and an open gallery with sloping ceilings. The house includes all energy costs and bed linen, towels and final cleaning are included in the price.

The quaint town of San Daniele del Friuli often gets overlooked by visitors, but if you want a real taste of authentic Italian living then a trip to the area is a must. Located a seven-minute stroll from the centre of San Daniele, this recently renovated home is full of traditional charm and modern touches. Bursts of colour and trendy pine pieces are offset against original ceiling beams and parquet flooring. We particularly like the antique chest of drawers in one of the bedrooms. But as nice as it is inside, we bet you’ll be spending most of your time in the garden. Especially in the evening, when the sugary sweet scent of night-blooming flowers floats on the gentle breeze. Enjoy antipasti around the alfresco dining table – there’s a prosciutteria next door if you need any last minute extras. When you’re ready to head out and explore, wander into town, drive less than thirty minutes to the city of Udine, or visit the sandy beaches of Lignano – just over an hour by car.
