This perfectly located home is an excellent base in Como. Comprising two apartments, on the second and third floors of the building, this home is ideal for two families looking to travel together comfortably. Each apartment has a kitchen and living space, so you’ll have plenty of room for downtime. Depart on boat tours of Lake Como from just 350 metres away, and explore nearby towns and cities – San Giovanni train station is just 600 metres away. There are restaurants and bars close by, making this a practical choice. 

The Essence of Como

We think you'd be hard-pressed to find a snazzy, modern home like this with better views of the Swiss alps. From the garden they're truly panoramic and this place has been designed to make the most of them – with window walls, sliding doors and a wraparound terrace. Come summer or winter, this ground floor apartment is an idyllic jumping off point to explore the stunning region, either on one of the many nearby hiking trails or on the ski slopes. Enjoy a lunchtime barbecue, and tuck into a dinner of fondue or raclette. If your muscle are aching from all the hiking or skiing, take some time out and head to the sauna.

High on a Hill

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Top of the Lake

Views of Northern Italy's peaceful Lake Maggiore don't come much better than this. It's a scene best admired from the private balcony of this smart townhouse perched on the hillsides overlooking the Borromeo's islands. Inside, the newly refurbished, pared-back interiors are perfect for a fuss-free stay for two, and the pretty suntrap garden to soak up the Italian sunshine is a nice touch. You'll need a car here as it's pretty remote with no amenities to walk to – but don't let that put you off. Stresa's regal seafront promenade and cobbled streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Borromeo

This spectacular lakeside villa boasts a wealth of amenities for large groups, with more than enough room for everyone. The private pool, tennis court and gym equipment provide ways to keep active, while the sauna and outdoor seating offer space to relax and unwind. Children and toddlers aren't permitted here, but babies are welcome and a free cot can be provided. The lack of stairs means the home is easy to get around, and your host can help arrange services including private chefs and in-house massages for an additional fee, to ensure you can focus on enjoying your stay. For trips into Milan and for exploring the surrounding area, we recommend hiring a car.

Villa Noce

This serviced studio is ideal for a romantic break or solo trip. Next to Bogogno Golf Club and just thirty minutes from Lake Maggiore or Malpensa Airport, it’s part of a renovated Italian farmhouse with plenty of character. Think rustic stone walls and terracotta floors. The space is cleverly designed, with a screened-off kitchen and big windows that open onto your own section of terrace beneath the wisteria. You can also make use of the shared gardens. Restaurants are a short walk away, and optional extras like breakfast or even a butler service can be arranged. It’s compact and there’s no sofa, but with so much to explore nearby, we doubt you'll want to lounge about anyway.

Studio Wisteria

Modern, bright and beautiful as it is, nothing's going to beat the outdoor area here. With ample seating, including an alfresco dining table under a flowering pergola, looking out over the glistening lake, you can see why this one made our collection. We also like the bathtub facing the door so you can even admire the views from inside. Because of the perched location of this home, you'll have to climb steps up to it, but it'll all be worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como. Speak to your host about boat trips, helicopter rides and more.

The Lake

This contemporary studio apartment is the ideal bolthole for exploring the beautiful city of Lugano. Located within walking distance of the city's cultural highlights as well as conference centres so it's perfectly suited for anyone, whether you're travelling for business or pleasure.

We love how easily this apartment lends itself to any occasion. A cosy bedroom, a living room for watching the smart TV, a workspace, or a romantic dining space. Its classic, neutral-toned decor is sleek and timeless, while still having a homeliness to it. 

Even if you're in Lugano on business, it'd be remiss not to explore this wonderful city with its unique blend of Swiss and Italian cultures. The Museum of Art of Italian Switzerland is not to be missed, and you can even sail between Switzerland and Italy for a day trip. Or, you can head to the Old Town to soak up the mix of Swiss-style buildings and Italian-style piazzas. And while there's so much to see, eat, drink, and do in Lugano, the city's highlight is the dazzling Lake Lugano – you can take in all of its beauty from the waterfront of Parco Ciani.

After spending dreamy days wandering around this picture-perfect city, you have a bar right downstairs for a nightcap under the stars. Or, pick up a bottle from the local market to be enjoyed in the comfort of your own cosy apartment, nibbling on antipasto around the dining table. 

Lugano Paradiso

When you step inside this 17th–century villa, there’s a sense of being transported to another time and place. With its atmospheric presence and poetic beauty, it’s the kind of home that’s been designed for beautiful gatherings. 

Set within the charming village of Baveno, just a short drive from Milan, this is the perfect setting for friends and family to celebrate in traditional Italian style. The communal spaces feel intimate and personal – with artistic details that inspire curiosity and intrigue. 

Follow the creative spirit through the pink inner patio and into the kitchen – this is a wonderful place to cook and socialise. No doubt you’ll be inspired to take your morning coffee outside and into the gardens. With views across Lake Maggiore and the famous Borromeo Islands, it’s easy to get lost in the magic of this setting. Spend slow days by the swimming pool, reading beneath the trees and enjoying long lunches on the terrace. 

It’s only a short walk from this home onto the main boulevard of the village where you can pick up any supplies. Or wind your way around the lake, stopping in a local cafe to admire the views.

As the sun sets across the mountains, you’ll love coming together around the large dining table to raise a glass of local wine, and share the beauty of Italian living. 

The Sofia Rose

Sports lovers, rejoice – this villa offers up its own private nine-hole golf course and tennis court, so you can stay active while soaking up the sun’s rays at your lakeside home. Set in an exclusive gated community, you’ll also find a private pool, private dock, bikes, canoes and a sailing boat, so if you love nothing more than some fun in the great outdoors, this villa will jump straight to the top of your holiday wish list. And if you’re not relaxing by or on the lake, how about a trip in the owner’s helicopter, to take in the sights from a different perspective? With peace and tranquillity mixed in, there’s something for everyone here. 

Lakeside Haze

If you’re looking for a picturesque spot near Bogogno Golf Club, this apartment’s a great pick. It’s part of a renovated farmhouse at the foot of the Alps, just under thirty minutes from Malpensa Airport and Lago Maggiore. Novara is also close by for a day trip. The mezzanine bedroom and bathroom are semi-open to the main floor, which has a sofa bed if you're staying as a group. Big farmhouse-style windows let in plenty of light and open onto your own terrace area with seating. The shared gardens add extra space to relax. You can also opt for breakfast or even a full butler service for the ultimate low-hassle getaway.

The Tranquilness

This little studio is in a great spot in Cressa. It's next to Bogogno Golf Club and only about half an hour from Lake Maggiore or the airport. You can walk to a few restaurants and bars, or head into Novara for a bit more buzz. Inside, the bedroom’s up on a mezzanine and there's a sofa bed downstairs, so it’s not the most private setup. It works well for a family or close friends, though. It's part of a renovated farmhouse, so you get loads of character, plus your own patio section and leafy gardens to share. You can even add breakfast, or go all out with a butler service.
