There are a lot of things we like about this lodge in the Alpine village of Cortina d'Amprezzo, but we'd be lying if we didn't single out the rather lovely view from the balcony as our standout highlight – from this spot, it's possible to gaze out over the locale's rooftops and dramatically beautiful mountains beyond.

Back inside, the interior design is as rustic as you might imagine, with an abundance of wood in everything from the walls and floors to the furnishings and finishes. A few pieces of artwork and natural decorative items lend a little character, while the horseshoe-shaped kitchen has enough space for cooking up hearty dinners when you're fresh off the slopes.

Ah yes, skiing – there's plenty of opportunity for winter sports here, with lifts up to the slopes lying within walking distance. Even closer, there are restaurants, shops and a museum within the town to explore.

Just an hour's drive from Venice, this hilltop villa offers panoramic countryside views. While the traditional decor and antique furniture may not be to everyone's tastes, we think the interiors are charming in their own right. But with three floors and steep steps here, it will be difficult for guests who struggle with stairs. The top-floor main suite is one of our favourites – we can't resist the wooden ceilings or that stone bathtub – but the sun-kissed terrace and private pool are close seconds. Day trips are easy with Treviso and Padova within driving distance, but if you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Asolo is a twenty-minute walk away and has artisan shops and restaurants.

Set in a traditional chalet-style building with a wooden roof and pretty wooden balcony in the Italian Alps, this charming home is ideal for an adventure-packed mountain escape. Fresh mountain air flows through this valley in the South Tyrol district, the northernmost region in Italy. It boasts some of the most majestic mountain views in the country – and that’s just one of the reasons we fell in love with this home. 

The first thing you'll notice as you approach is the chalet-like charm, set among a rolling meadow landscape. The apartment is located on the ground floor and has a simple yet, classic interior style – this pared-back style allows the magnificent scenery outside to steal the spotlight. Soft neutral tones are used throughout, giving the space a retreat-like feel. The feeling is further amplified by the on-site amenities like an infrared sauna room and steam room where you can soothe your muscles between adventures. 

During the winter months, skiers and snowboarders can take a seven-minute drive to the slopes at the Reinswald resort to shred some powder. If you're visiting during the warmer seasons, then you can take your pick from outdoor activities including horse riding, cycling, and golf, all with the epic alpine backdrops. And, with the town of Sarnthein just seven minutes away by car, you can make a splash in the outdoor swimming pool and then refuel with some hearty fare from one of the local restaurants.

Sitting right in the middle of the Alpine town of Cortina D'Amprezzo, this recently refurbished apartment has a rather suave style that piqued our interest, not to mention some pretty views of the local town and the surrounding mountainsides that you can enjoy from the small terrace. We won't lie, we've seen bigger kitchens and bedrooms, but we'd be willing to overlook this, particularly as the lifts to both Tofana and Faloria ski slopes lie so close to the front door. Oh, and did we mention that there's a sauna to warm up in afterwards? Well, there is.

A short stroll from the shores of Lake Garda and overlooking the 16th-century Bastione castle, this third-floor apartment is set within a historic building in the centre of Riva del Garda.

Set in a panoramic position with views of Ponte di Legno and the surrounding mountains, this alpine apartment is perfect for those seeking an active break or a serene escape. While the interiors are nothing to write home about, the private balcony and close proximity to the slopes, amenities, bars, and restaurants make up for it. And, while it may feel a little cramped at full capacity with two people on the living room sofa bed, for a short ski break, it offers good bang for your buck.

With stop-and-stare views of Lake Garda (which is a short walk away), this villa is perfect for a family holiday or group getaway. The sunny gardens are our favourite feature – there’s a scenic swimming pool overlooking the lake, plus plenty of shaded spots to laze with a good book. Inside, the accommodation is spread across the main villa and a separate annexe and apartment, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding country character. Those beams mean some of the sleeping spaces have limited headroom, so are probably best for little ones. For a slice of local life, visit nearby Gargnano, which has lakeside cafes and restaurants aplenty – and more of those breathtaking views we love.

Inside, it's a ground floor apartment well suited to family life. Modern in design, its big windows and spacious rooms keep it bright and sociable, with all eyes on the view to the rear. There's a well kitted-out kitchen and a dining table inside, but we think you'll be spending much of your time eating on the covered terrace. 

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Owned by the noble Papafava dei Carraresi family since the thirteenth century, the home entwines its charming rural setting with hundreds of years of family history to create a unique space that is sure to captivate the curiosity of its guests. 

Across the property, you'll find numerous different seating areas designed around the arts of relaxation and socialising. The space is idyllic for those in larger groups or celebrating special occasions such as family reunions, birthdays and weddings.

For games nights, get competitive over a round of ping pong before settling down in the living area or suite bedrooms (spread across the main house and the annexe) for more tranquil moments of relaxation.

Housed in a historic building, this apartment is situated in the Riviere Esterne neighbourhood of Padua. While you'll need to take the stairs up to the home's entrance, it has two small balconies – one overlooking the district’s internal canal and another over the Riviera Paleocapa. If you need to catch up on work, there’s a study area here too, but we bet you’d prefer to explore this cultural city. Known for its frescoes such as those in the Scrovegni Chapel, there’s plenty to see. The iconic Specola is a five-minute walk, while an eight-minute stroll will take you to Piazza Duomo and the centre of this university town is ten minutes on foot.

It’s on the outskirts of Livigno where gondolas and ski lifts await to whisk you up the mountainside. A heated ski locker can keep your ski boots and salopettes warm and dry, ready for another day on the powder. In summer, the hiking trails up into the Alps reward with stunning views and you can fuel up for big walks with a view of an Alpine meadow, thanks to a stone-built barbecue and dining area in the vast garden. Heading inside, the first thing that caught our attention was the picture-frame window by the dining table, framing the mountain view like a work of art. The sitting room is tucked in a cosy little wood-clad corner for that cabin-chic feel and long windows let the sunlight stream in. A sleek black kitchen hides everything you need for apres-ski meals and morning coffees before the slopes. Bedrooms are tucked beneath wooden ceilings across both floors and the added bonus is the steam room for sore muscles.
