It's not often we mention our admiration for scruff marks, but the knocks on the wooden fittings nod to the history of the flat, and by extension, the city, so we really love them. Plenty of modern comforts have been added to offer everything you need for an effortless stay, from rainfall showers to cafetieres, it's all there. And when you're in search of a calming spot to delve into a good book, the third and fourth bedrooms benefitting from soft floral sofas, ornamental lanterns and plenty of natural light pouring in, simply call out for your attention.

From the striking fortress of the Castel Sant'Angelo, founded during the second century, history is on the cards within a short walk in any direction. As you cross the elegant bridge over the Tiber, heading towards the bustling streets of Campo de’ Fiori, the presence of history and old-world wonder is palpable. Arriving at this traditional 'via', the orange block stands out against the green leaves of the desert-like foliage lining the street. But while the exterior has a fairly understated facade, this is what really allows for the decor to pop. We recommend pouring yourself a glass of primitivo while you take a look around.

At this Prati penthouse, exploring Rome is a breeze. The Vatican Museums are 700 metres away, St. Peter's Basilica is a fifteen-minute stroll, and the nearest metro station is five minutes on foot. The decor is a bit dated and children and toddlers aren't permitted, but we think friends or families with older children will settle right in. The wi-fi isn't the strongest in all rooms so it's perhaps not the best for remote working, but Jill's unique art adorns the walls and the location is wonderful. You'll be on a quiet cobblestone street, but you may still hear some non-disruptive outside noise from the city. Within walking distance, you'll find an array of shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, with public transport nearby for getting around.

Location is where Noon Herald sets itself apart. It’s at the centre of a triangle that has the Vatican, Piazza Navona, and Trastevere as its points. The other big draw is the structure of the flat, with a double-height ceiling and the sloping beams – these help balance out the slightly spartan furniture elsewhere. It would be a good place for someone who is more used to hotels, as there are several services that are more commonly associated with them, such as daily bed turning and clean towels on request.

From Dusk Herald, the Vatican, Piazza Navona and Trastevere are all easily reachable on foot. You’ve also got the Tiber just around the corner – it’s hard to overstate just how well-placed the flat is. Inside it’s simple, but with a pretty wooden ceiling upstairs, and lots of light. The kitchen is a little beige, but we did like the geometric wallpaper. We also noticed a lot of birdsong coming through the windows, which added a lovely, bucolic feel to the place.

It's located down a quiet cobbled street, so you'll be able to enjoy a relaxing glass of wine from the private courtyard while still being close to the city's sights. You're within walking distance of Campo de' Fiori where you can pick up fresh local produce, while Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Vatican City are a short Metro ride away. At home, whip up cocktails in the stylish bar or prepare group meals in the fully equipped kitchen – there's plenty of space to unwind and entertain, though one person will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room.

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

A quirky base in Rome, this home is the attic of a building, so sits amid Rome’s rooftops. This means there are a lot of stairs to climb – it’s not going to be suitable for everyone and isn’t recommended for children under the age of six. But if you can manage the stairs, you’re rewarded with a charming home-from-home. The apartment even boasts a private terrace – the perfect spot for alfresco dining – and is next to a chapel designed by Raphael in the 1500s. You’ll share your outside space with the original bell tower. Seeing more of Rome’s architecture and history is a breeze, as you’re within walking distance of all the main attractions, including Campo de’ Fiori – just a five-minute stroll.

Not far from the Vatican, this apartment is an excellent family option. Though the living area isn't the largest, there's plenty of space across the five bedrooms. The kitchen is well-stocked if you fancy a home-cooked meal, but for something extra special, your host is happy to arrange a private chef for a fee. You'll also have access to a small balcony ideal for enjoying morning espressos and sipping sundowners. Location-wise, shops and restaurants are a short walk away, as is the iconic St Peter's Square. Further afield, but still within easy reach, are the city's other famous landmarks, putting you in a prime spot for exploring.

Bedrooms are smart and bright, and the murals add character and recall the city’s many frescoes. Vatican City, Castel Sant’Angelo and Piazza del Popolo are all just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Campo di Fiori are just twenty-five minutes on foot. Plus, the immediate neighbourhood is known for its great shopping and its numerous cafes and bars.

Since 1869, the Campo de' Fiori has been a hub of market trading for fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And by evening, this charming square becomes a hub of alfresco dining spots and wine bars. With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.
