Sure, you’ll need to climb two sets of steep, narrow stairs to reach the apartment, but you’ll see the effort was worth it as soon as you step through the door. We love the private balcony – just the spot for morning coffee before a day of sightseeing. It's a short walk into the local village, where you can pick up local produce for a barbecue and hire bikes to explore the countryside; if you're after a taste of city life, vibrant Antwerp is just a short drive away.

The fireplace beckons you on colder evenings and creates a romantic atmosphere –  perfect for trying Belgian beer. Having the kitchen in the open-plan living space may dissuade you from experimenting with anything pungent, but at least you can keep the designated cook company as they prepare dinner. From your doorstep, you're just a short stroll from historic sites, restaurants and bars, while the River Leie is only five minutes away.

For a trip away from home, this entirely modern holiday pad is right on the money. Grab the kids and get ready for a time filled with beach days, swimming, tennis, sailing – we could go on. You could even cross the border into Belgium and spend a day in medieval Antwerp, with its impressive cathedral and café-lined cobbled streets. Back at the house, head inside and light the gas fireplace for an inviting warmth or take things outside onto the deck. There’s a barbecue just waiting to be fired up for a family meal, but the jetty is our favourite spot. Leave the kids in front of the television while you watch the water and enjoy a glass of wine to round up a fun-filled day. Proost.

Each contemporary cabin is spaced out to offer a little privacy and enjoys a slice of garden by the water. On your return, an oasis of muted colours greets you. The open-plan living space has two clear sections: in one corner, an L-shaped sofa faces floor-to-ceiling windows and is warmed by a towering white fireplace, while in the other, a kitchenette and dining room table are on hand when you don't feel like heading into town. Bedrooms are equally minimalist, meaning there will be no fights for who sleeps where, with a choice of two double beds and calming cream colours.

The open-plan living space has floor-to-ceiling windows and comfy seating. The kitchen has everything you need to put together a meal, but restaurants and bars are just a short walk away. Inside, this home is modern and comfortable, with plenty of room for a family. A sociable, open-plan living room is fitted with a contemporary kitchen and you can choose to eat indoors or outside on the covered part of the terrace. But the real star of the show is the home's spacious deck overlooking the park's lake. Complete with comfy outdoor sofas and an outdoor shower to rinse the sand off those feet, it's the perfect spot for evening drinks.

With restaurants, bars and shops all within walking distance, there’s no need to use the car during your stay – but if you do fancy a drive, the seaside town of Goes is just fifteen-minutes away, with its medieval harbour and boutique shops.

You can tell this incredibly chic apartment has been designed by someone with a keen aesthetic eye. The walls are painted in distinctive, elegant tones, the cream corduroy sofa is an enviable centrepiece to the living room, and the pops of lush plant life in each room tie the whole effect together. Wake up and draw the curtains to let the sunlight stream in through the two huge bedroom windows before sipping a coffee on the balcony. Every effort towards comfort and enjoyment has been made: the bathroom has a bathtub and a huge double headed walk in shower, and there is a clothing rail and plenty of storage space for your things.
