Despite its minimalism, there are still plenty of cosy touches, from the movie room, ideal for snuggling up with a blockbuster, to the wood-burning stove which provides a warming atmosphere as you share a meal at the long dining table. Outside, there's plenty of space to enjoy alfresco feasts cooked on the grill, and even your very own swimming pool – take a refreshing dip, or simply laze in the sun as you watch the kids splash about. There's also a tennis court and golf course close by, and a five-minute walk will bring you down to the nearby lake. This corner of paradise might make you forget that you're so close to the bright lights of Stockholm but, should you want to visit the cobbled streets of the old town, you can drive there in around fifteen minutes.

Built back in 1902 and painted in that iconic red hue that epitomises rural Sweden, this spacious and sprawling holiday home has maintained many of its original features over the proceeding century. When combined with its secluded island location, one of some 30,000 that make up the Stockholm archipelago, it's perfect for those seeking that all-too-rare feeling of disconnection from the frenetic pace of modern life.

Despite its remoteness, the house is just a few minutes by car or boat from the vibrant archipelago town of Vaxholm, with its tempting bakeries, fishmongers selling fresh seafood, a surprisingly international array of restaurants, plus supermarkets for stocking up on essentials. However, it's easy enough to maintain your island idyll should you want to.

With a private beach, a stunning sauna that looks out over the water, a private dock for jumping off afterwards, plus an expansive lawn for picnic lunches and outdoor games, why would you want to leave?

Sitting close to the coastline on one of the approximately 24,000 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, this address benefits from not only a private dock, but also a motor boat you can borrow to explore your surroundings a little further. Alternatively, if you're more than content to sit and admire it from afar, there are alfresco tables in the pretty garden from which to dine and gaze out at peaceful waters.

This being Scandinavia, there are certain points in the year in which you'll simply want to coop up inside and it's more than possible to get toasty and warm here. Not only are there wood-burning fireplaces dotted about the communal spaces, but there's also one in the spa-style bathroom, complete with a tub and relaxation area. We're also particularly fond of the homely design throughout, from the rustic kitchens and bright living spaces to the soft rugs underfoot.

Part of the beauty of this address is its sense of isolation and privacy, although this does mean you'll have to hop in the car and potentially on a ferry for restaurants and attractions. That being said, the host can arrange for a private chef to visit the home, which makes life easier somewhat.

Set in the woodlands, just over twenty minutes from the resort town of Levi, this home offers the best of both worlds – isolation, tranquillity, and yet only a short drive from civilisation. Plus, there's the added bonus of being a mere 40-metres from a natural beach, shared with neighbouring cabins. It's the perfect spot to get away from it all and embrace the slow pace of the Finnish countryside. We love how the scandi-style interiors give off a modern look, while the plump grey sofas, animal print rugs, wooden structure and stone hearth fireplace keep things extra snug. Enter into the height of hygge with your very own sauna – whether you've been out slaloming the slopes or idling by the water, a detox will provide that healthy, holiday glow feeling in no time at all. Outside of the home, views of the Northern lights are visible (time and weather permitting), while the charming nearby town of Kittilä has a 19th-century wooden church, authentic restaurants and bars, a twenty-three-minute drive away.

Nestled away on the banks of Lake Saimaa, this log cabin has to be one of the more picturesque homes in our collection. There's a real sense of rural isolation here, with nothing but forest and large expanses of peaceful water for company. The home has a rowboat and a pier if you fancy exploring, but there's also the option to hire paddleboards, outboard motors and fatbikes for doing so at speed. Back inside, you can warm up from the day's excursions in the sauna — this is Finland, after all — or next to the fireplace in the living room with views of the great outdoors from the large windows. If it's warm enough to stay outside for a little longer, there are a multitude of spots from which to enjoy the tranquillity, whether it's on the balcony, the swing seat in the garden or perched around the fire pit. The nearest large town is Savonlinna — about an hour's drive away — which has an annual opera festival held in a medieval castle.

Salted Liquorice

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

Lakeside Lonkero

Enter into the height of hygge living with this cosy cabin on the sprawling banks of Lake Solojärvi. Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. We love the timber-heavy interiors, striking fire and sliding glass doors that offer views of the picturesque landscape all around – as if you'd need reminding. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.

Perched on the sprawling banks of Lake Saimaa, this cabin has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the stresses of daily life. The timber-heavy interior sticks to a peaceful colour palette of neutrals and features a wood-burning fireplace to gather around when the night draws in. The large white kitchen complete with an island is pretty impressive, too. Stepping out the front door, there's a covered porch at the front of the house, which has a table and barbecue for dinner with a lakeside view. Closer to the water, there's a sauna outbuilding with a wood-burner stove, kitchenette and separate lounge. There's an additional sauna — an electric one — in the main home for good measure. With the largest lake in the country starting just metres away, you can rent standup paddleboards and boats with outboard motors from the host, as well as fatbikes to ride around the banks. Alternatively, why not take up the option of renting a mobile hot tub and gazing at the stars instead?

Overlooking the bold architecture of the Edvard Munch Museum and the deep blue waters of the Skagerrak strait from your seventh-floor vantage point, it's easy to forget that you're right in the heart of the Norwegian capital. But then again, Scandinavian countries have always excelled at creating laid-back cities that are a pleasure to spend time in.

The neighbourhood on your doorstep, Bjørvika, is one of Oslo’s best areas to stay in when it comes to innovative restaurants, bars, museums, and art galleries. The apartment is also just a fifteen-minute walk from Oslo’s city centre with cosmopolitan culture and history aplenty – think vibrant nightlife, lots of shopping streets, and famous landmarks such as Akershus Fortress and the Royal Palace. 

For those looking for something a bit different, we recommend a trip to Ekerberg Sculpture Park. Offering art and nature at its finest, it’s also a lovely place to grab a bite to eat. It is easily accessible from the apartment either by foot, car, or public transport.

This unique apartment offers the best of both worlds with great proximity to the city’s sights and attractions, and a beautiful location on the Norwegian fjord which evokes a feeling of maritime with the scent of the sea. We would love to begin our mornings here with breakfast and coffee on the balcony overlooking the fjord which flows between the buildings, admiring the reflections in the waters. 

Then, head out to explore the area. The streets of the neighbourhood are filled with fantastic gastronomic and cultural experiences, while great activities and sights are within walking distance from your door. Browse the books at the amazing Deichman Library, learn something new at the Munch Museum, or visit the Opera House – all are two minutes away on foot.

After a busy day of ticking off your bucket list, head back to this home and relax on the one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and take a moment to admire the diverse artwork that decorates the walls. On warmer evenings, why not grab a bottle of wine from the cooler, pour yourself a glass, and head out to the balcony to sip the refreshing drink as you take in the beautiful water vista?

The Flow of the Fjord

Perched on the banks of lake Yli-Suolijärvi in northern Finland, this recently-finished cabin is a wonderful place for a wintery escape. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

A homage to modern design, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sleek finishes expertly fuse together over two floors of utter luxury. Head out onto the vast terrace, where unobstructed panoramic views of Stockholm's skyline spread out before you. With different zones for lounging and a barbecue, you could easily watch day turn into night from here. Back inside, there's a dining and kitchen space made for action with Smeg appliances, so you're all set to host a glamorous dinner party. Later, go for a refreshing swim from your private dock, or take the free stand-up paddleboards out on the water. You can hire a boat from your lovely host too and go fishing or have a kick around on the soccer field. As the sun sets, enjoy a glass of snaps and fire up the pizza oven and savour an alfresco meal, or let a private bartender and chef cater for your dinner party. Inside, the stunning landscape can be relished from the sofas in the bright, stylish living space. There's even a separate one-bedroom guest house for those seeking more privacy. A ferry to the mainland and Downtown Stockholm leaves approximately every hour from right outside the villa and takes around twenty minutes. Here you can head to the Swedish Museum of Natural History and ABBA The Museum or visit the Royal Palace.
