It's a beautiful, raw area famous for its dramatic waterfalls, and a stay at this modern home offers the perfect antidote to hectic modern living. The large glass windows are a dominating feature both inside and out, letting an abundance of sunshine steam through into the open-plan living room/kitchen. The interior is a masterclass in Scandi simplicity, with plenty of wood, soft grey colour scheme (on the walls, furniture and kitchen units), but there are elegant contemporary touches that add warmth and personality, such as the blue velvet stools and ornate, Rococo-style tiles in the bathroom. You’ll be able to enjoy sea views from the raised, decked terrace, and the water’s edge is only a 200m walk away. So whether you’re here for fishing, hiking, cycling or just admiring the spectacular scenery, we think this Norwegian retreat will help you press the reset button. And relax.

Norwegian Dreams

 This idyllic lakeside cottage with breathtaking views and countless opportunities for enjoying fishing and water sports is an ideal place for a restful and memorable family holiday. 

Step inside for a perfect picture of Nordic elegance, with the wooden walls, stylish, minimalist furnishings and muted colour palette. Naturally, we love the breathtaking views, which can be marvelled at while you lounge about in the cosy living area. On cooler nights, there is a charming wood burner for added warmth. The kitchen might be compact in size, but it is modern and well-equipped and it has everything you need to rustle up delicious family meals, to be enjoyed at the handsome dining table, or better still in the outdoor dining area, where you can also make use of the barbecue. 

Good night’s rest is assured by the comfy bedrooms, and kids will love the bunk beds. Wake up refreshed and ready for another day of adventures in this beautiful natural setting – hire a boat and head out on the lake, or try your hand at fishing right from the lakefront. Venture further out and discover the area’s rich tradition of arts and crafts, explore the picturesque villages of  Helgheim, Ålhus, Vassenden, and Langhaugane, and hike in the ancient woodland. 

On Golden Pond

Overlooking the picturesque lake Jølstravatnet – famed for its excellent fishing and immortalised in the works of expressionist artist Astrup – this cosy cottage is framed by high mountains, untouched villages, and a beach plot. Relax with a coffee in the spacious lounge diner and take in the panoramic views of the water, then head out onto the lake for a spot of fishing. 

Perfect for anglers, the cottage includes a cleaning table and freezing facilities. As night falls, grill your catch on your lakeside terrace and watch the sunset across the snow-capped mountains, before settling in by the wood-burning fireplace.

Despite the hidden location, restaurants and groceries are within 3 miles away, while various curious sights are within a thirty-minute drive. These include the farmstead and gallery Astruptuner – dedicated to the aforementioned expressionist painter Astrup – waterfall Huldrefossen and stunning inland fjord Kjøsnesfjorden. We particularly love the Bøyabreen Glacier, which can be viewed indoors while devouring meatballs from the restaurant Brevasshytta. 


The Brook Horse

Norway is famous for its majestic fjords, and if you really want to get up close and personal with the country’s beautiful natural landscape, then there’s nowhere better than this home. The sea is right on your doorstep, and the boats bobbing gently on the still waters aren’t just there for you to admire. The home comes with the use of a motorboat, and as a certified fishing cottage, you’re allowed to reel in your very own catch of the day. Spend the day on the water and the evening dining on the fruits of your labour before watching the incredible sunsets from the elevated balcony.  


Captain of Your Own Fate

This dreamy home boasts mesmerising views. It’s the perfect choice for those looking to get away from it all and simply relax and unwind, getting closer to nature. The cottage can be found on the edge of Ålfjord, with direct access to the water – can you think of anything better than waking up to these views and diving straight into the crystal clear water for a swim?

When you’ve dried off from your morning dip, head for the kitchen to admire the view while you whip up breakfast. The quiet, idyllic setting means you can enjoy a slower pace of life here, spending your time lingering over meals, reading a book, or outside simply drinking in the view. 

If you do want to explore, you might head out in the boat. There’s excellent fishing in these waters, so you’re sure to catch something fine for dinner – why not grill it on the barbecue and enjoy a feast on the terrace? As the sun starts to set, you might light the fire pit, and sit around it toasting marshmallows and swapping stories. This is the kind of holiday that everyone remembers for all the right reasons. 


The Light House

Where the lush evergreen forests roll down the hillside to meet the cold waters of Svortevika Bay, sits this unique and thoroughly modern home. In a secluded and remote spot, this angular house manages to combine the feel of a lakeside fishing lodge with a comfortable and truly twenty-first century home. As a certified fishing house, you can cast your lines from the private jetty, or take the motorboat out into the bay to fish in peace and quiet. Back home, everything is set up to ensure maximum comfort after a day of angling out in the chilled waters of Western Norway. The double-height ceiling in the living room gives the place a sense of openness and space, while the wood-burning stove reminds you that this is a cosy and warm place to relax. In the summer months, head out onto the balcony and enjoy sipping a glass of wine as you take in the view, or enjoying a fish supper, caught fresh and cooked on the electric barbecue or in the kitchen. Before bed, take time to unwind and relax with a soak in the warm waters of the jacuzzi jet bathtub. You’re several kilometers from the nearest town, so the sense of remoteness is palpable, making this the ideal destination to escape from the bustling modern world and embrace nature.

Forest Shore

Sitting on the island of Bømlo, this cabin can be found at the waterfront and offers plentiful opportunities for fishing, swimming and boat trips, as well as hiking trips around the beautiful landscape.
