Made up of two luxurious floors with distinct styles, this is a home for lovers of rustic antiquity and modern minimalism. While the lower level has period features (we love that the old potbelly stove is still in place in the living room), a balcony with views over the street below, and plenty of character, the top floor suite has a very different feel. Downstairs you'll find two of the bedrooms, along with a dining area, modern kitchen, and bathroom. But climb the stairs and you'll enter what feels a lot like a self-contained flat. Ideal if some of your party would prefer a bit more privacy, it's got its own lounge and TV, a sleek kitchenette, work nook, and bathroom. Lit with skylights and painted all white, it's a charming spot to relax in. From this quiet street, it's easy to explore the historic heart of Lisbon. You're just ten minutes away from the Príncipe Real and Santos districts, and your balcony has views across to São Bento Palace.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

The first thing to bring up when talking about Flying Fish has to be the location. It’s right in the middle of Baixa, with Chiado also very nearby, which is more or less the perfect spot from which to explore the city. The flat’s welcoming – individual without ever seeming brash. It’s not perfect, and as you’d expect from any home that’s been visited even a couple of times, there were some inevitable signs of wear (a few scuff marks, nothing serious), but when you run the positives past the negatives, it’s not even close.

Sitting on a street boasting one of the oldest houses in Lisbon – dating back almost five hundred years – this beautiful spot in the Alfama district paints a picture of what the capital looked like pre-earthquake. And although this bright apartment isn't half that old, it's surrounded by quaint, winding streets full of photo opportunities, fado houses and picturesque squares. 
 
You’ll instantly be charmed by the dazzling amount of natural light that fills this home thanks to the trio of French doors in the living room that gives way to a private narrow balcony. Perch here in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee while taking in views of the square below or gather here at sundown for a glass of wine before exploring the local dining scene.

This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that is a prime example of Pombaline architecture. At first glance, the interior looks like it's been designed with Scandinavian minimalism in mind, but there are a couple of creative touches that add some warmth and personality — the host's own paintings and photography on the walls, for example, or the chic monochromatic marble on the kitchen surfaces. There's a rather lovely view of the rooftops of Chiado out the living room window too, which should give you some inspiration to head out and explore. In one direction, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga can be reached in ten minutes on foot, while the lively neighbourhood of Bairro Alto sits a similar amount of time in the other direction.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

On one of the main roads in the city (and alongside some very high-end shops), Sandhill is in a stunning location. It’s actually within a shopping plaza, and restaurants, bars, and the main tourist sights are all easy to reach as well. The flat is decorated simply, but in a wholesome, respectable manner. The lack of flash is by no means indicative of a lack of effort on the part of the host. We particularly liked the little balcony, which was perfect for a morning coffee, or an evening glass of wine.

There's a concierge at the entrance to the building that homes Porcini Wall during the day—these perks come with the recently refurbished building that looks more like a five-star hotel than a humble townhouse. This home was designed for a couple, or a group of four with ease, due to a comfortable sofa bed and a curtain that can be used to create a separate space. The high-quality materials (like the Lioz stone in the kitchen) testify to the hosts' attention to detail, but we particularly liked the views over Baixa and easy access to Praça do Comercio.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

Located on the border between Rossio and Chiado, Pumpkin Patch is tucked away on a quiet street – but the Santa Justa lift and other central sights are all within walking distance, which makes it ideal for first-time visitors. This is a simple home, whose design is heavily focused on comfort, leaving the view as its greatest strength. From the cute balcony, you can admire the unobstructed view of the São Jorge hill and the famous eponymous castle on top.

Rua São José is an old cobblestone street, full of traditional restaurants and cafes – but just around the corner, an avenue full of designer boutiques awaits an eager shopper. Solar Field fits wonderfully into this mixture of old and modern, with well-preserved architectural elements and sleek furniture. Eighteenth-century-style landscape scenes on the walls will help warm you up ahead of the cultural attractions in the old city centre, while the big marble bath will help you relax after a long day of exploration.

With a fantastic location, just a three-minute walk to the picturesque neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, a culinary hotspot, this stylish apartment has a wealth of bars, restaurants and historic architecture right on its doorstep. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, on the other hand, Chiado with its chic boutiques, is only a ten-minute stroll away. You can even walk to some of the city’s iconic attractions such as Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle and Miradouro Portas do Sol in under thirty minutes. If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Or, to get the most out of your trip, let the concierge organise tickets and experiences for you. Back at this modern home – there’s a lot we adore about this place, from the wooden floors and inspirational quotes to the gorgeous bathroom and little windows with cute shutters. The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. So, relax with a glass of wine at the dining table and enjoy a Portuguese feast. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

Located near Marques de Pombal roundabout, Rafael is a rustic-chic affair surrounded by posh boutiques and restaurants –  a delightful mix. The host has preserved the original corniced ceilings and the regal doors, as well as the kitchen that's itching to be used. The second bedroom does lack privacy – you can only access the master bedroom if you go through it. But if you're happy with that layout quirk, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this traditional home.

A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Perched up high in the narrow unmistakably Lisboeta streets of Bairro Alto lays this breezy modern apartment, perfect for an authentic encounter with Portugal’s capital. Inside, an open-plan kitchen-living area serves as the entertainment hub of the home. Throw together some knockout Iberian finger food in the well-appointed kitchen as the rest of your clan take to the impressively lengthy modular couch. The double-height ceilings in the lounge coupled with an impressive cinema projector transforms the space into your own private theatre for cosy nights in. When it’s time to take to the white cobbled pavements, you couldn’t be better primed. The charming Number 28 tram can be caught from the end of your street and will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of Lisbon’s prettiest landmarks. You’ll reach São Jorge castle in no more than fifteen minutes and the cathedral in ten. After a full day of exploring, return back to your locale for a hive of restaurants and bars that come alive in the evenings.

Cloud Steps

It’s a bit of a cliche (not to mention a cop-out) to say that location is everything, but sometimes it’s good enough that we have to lead with it. Snapdragon is on Rua Augusta, the central street in Baixa, which is bookended by Praça Dom Pedro IV and the victory arch at the entrance to Praça do Comércio. While it can’t quite match its position, the interior of the flat is not a disappointment either. It’s done up nicely, and while it’s not without flaws, some of the vintage furniture is really nice.


Snapdragon

With its wonderfully central location in Lisbon’s historic Alfama district, this comfortable apartment offers an ideal base for those looking to make the most out of the city’s cultural hotspots. 
 
Located on the spot that was once home to a carpentry workshop that served to rebuild the Palácio da Rosa after the earthquake of 1755, it’s no wonder that this home feature nods to Portuguese history in its decor. From the ornamental guitar in the living room to the artisanal wooden headboard in the bedroom, subtle hints at the city’s rich history sit alongside contemporary furnishings to create a most welcoming ambience. 
 
Make yourself comfortable on the sofa with a glass of wine after a day of exploring or gather around the dining table for a celebratory meal when you’re not out sampling the local dining scene. The bedroom’s Juliet balcony is the perfect spot to perch with a nightcap before snuggling into bed for a restful night’s sleep.
 
When it comes to sightseeing, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance. Visit São Jorge Castle – a twelve-minute walk – or take a ride on the Santa Justa Lift, ten minutes away on foot. Mirante is comfortable, with lots of light. It’s in a very good location, just a few blocks from the Praça do Comércio. The kitchen’s good. This is all useful to know, but it’s not really the point. Both floors have terraces, which means 360º views of the city, and they are some views. The cathedral, the castle, the lift, the Carmo convent, the river – all the main landmarks are visible from the roof. It’s special, and overrides pretty much anything else we could say about the place.

Mirante

The real superpower of this home is the floor to ceiling French doors which flood the living areas with plenty of light. This, coupled with the open-plan layout of the main space, gives the apartment a great feeling of openness (often a rarity in Lisbon). While the dining and living area offer space galore, the kitchen is on the smaller side – something culinary enthusiasts should bear in mind. All this aside, the location is spot on – in the heart of the famous Bairro Alto where you'll find a large proportion of Lisbon's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Graça, away from the hordes of tourists in Baixa and the Bairro Alto, you'll find this comfortable apartment. If you're keen to experience a more authentic side to Lisbon and immerse yourself in the city's unique charms, then it's the ideal place to call home during your stay. 

The whole building’s been recently renovated, giving it a fresh and clean feel. Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. The open-plan setup makes it easy to chat with your guests while you cook, before serving up your culinary creations at the handsome wooden table. And there's even a little balcony, so you can breathe in some fresh air as you enjoy a nightcap at the end of a long day. 

From here, you're in the perfect position to roam Graça's winding streets, discovering hidden gems like quaint port bars and artisanal boutiques. The Miradouro da Graça, with its stunning panoramic views, is only a seven-minute walk away, and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is even closer. And, if you want to tick off your sightseeing list, then the Castelo de São Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral are within a fifteen-minute stroll.

You'll only like Baixa if you're ready for the full Lisbon experience – this is one of the busiest parts of town, with tourists and locals out and about shopping and dining at all times of the day. Muscle Car is on the third floor, which means you'll lose some of the noise, but the back of this home is noticeably quieter than the front. Complete with staples of great Portugueses design (such as the corniced ceiling and the gaiolas pombalinas), it serves as a pleasant urban stay. Plus, we loved chatting to Tiago, who truly cares about showing his guests a great time in Lisbon. 

The Great Pombalino

Located on a quiet street in the authentically Portuguese Arroios neighbourhood, this sweet apartment is up in the eaves of a traditional building. Inside, it’s a contemporary space with white walls and minimal furnishings. Hardwood floors are topped with cotton rugs to add some colour and warmth to the home. In the mornings, enjoy the view from the windows with an espresso and famed custard tart, followed by a stroll around your locale. The Campo dos Mártires da Pátria gardens are sun-soaked and serene, interrupted only by the occasional calls of the ducks and chickens that make their home here. Old school cafes and hole-in-the-wall eateries line the streets while Avenida Almirante Reis, just a ten-minute walk away, is one of Lisbon’s main arteries, connecting you to the iconic Tagus river and downtown district.   

Beyond Abstract

Positively brimming with bright colours, eclectic decor and playful patterns, this vibrant pad evokes a groovy sixties vibe that really caught our eye. Its high ceilings and huge floor-to-ceiling windows create a bright and open living space that's perfectly suited to larger groups looking to explore central Lisbon. Filled with bold art and design choices – we're looking at the hippopotamus in the third bedroom while writing this – it's got heart and soul that's hard-to-come-by. Whether you're playing games on the flower petal coffee table, fixing your hair in the chic bubble mirror or gathering around the grand dining table for a feast, you'll instantly feel the charm of this unique home. Aside from the punchy interiors, we loved the location in attraction-packed Cais do Sodré. It's a ten-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and only twenty minutes (on foot) from the historic Alfama district.

Although this is a small, open-plan studio, it doesn't feel cluttered or tight. An eclectic mixture of design influences from Scandi to vintage, it succeeds in being beautifully consistent. We loved its earthy colour palette and use of different textures and materials. The final result is a diverse studio with great space division and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates Pombaline architecture. 

The Marble Baronet

Located in the heart of the city, in the neighbourhood of Baixa, this is a fantastic area for anyone who is keen to be in the thick of it. Major attractions, great restaurants, bars and shops are just around the corner, so you really won't get bored. Although the property is on the small side, it is well-equipped with one bedroom, living room, and kitchen. Plus, the sliding glass panel door in the living area allows for this space to be treated as a second private room – quite an ingenious idea to create a bit more flexibility.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.


Hunter

The Lagoon is a minimalist haven. It’s within walking distance to Praça do Comércio and many of Baixa’s liveliest spots. This home isn’t for travellers expecting the a very personal experience,  but it’s comfortable, and we like that the communal area is so bright. It exudes Scandinavian elegance while retaining some of that Lisbon charm, with the balcony, decorative tiles in the bathroom, and stucco ceilings.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

Yet, if you need even more space, your accommodating host Mauro owns two additional flats in the same building, so you could always stage a family or friends takeover of most of the building. In terms of location, you couldn't be better placed to explore Lisbon's historic neighbourhoods on foot. You'll find a highly rated Brazilian-Portuguese fish restaurant just downstairs, the gothic church ruins of Convento do Carmo one minute from your front door and a twelve-minute walk to the curated Time Out Market. So pack your most comfortable trainers and prepare to hike up and down some hills as you get to know the best of this charismatic city.


Heartstring's Pull

This playful pad offers a central location and places you in a prime spot for exploring Lisbon's cultural landmarks on foot. Even for ventures further afield, you'll find Graça bus stop is only a minute's walk away. We think it's ideal for families and groups of friends, with a private outside dining terrace complete with a barbecue, as well as plenty of indoor space to relax. The colourful bedrooms will have you up and raring to go come morning – and just as well, with so much to see and do nearby. Note that there's no lift here, so be prepared to climb three flights of stairs to reach the apartment.

This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

Deep inside Lisbon's medieval neighbourhood of Alfama, this bright home spans across two floors, giving you lots of space to move around. The two floors are separated by a unique feature, a net through which you can see down into the living room from the master bedroom. Aside from the unique layout, The Likely Bunch is immaculate and comfortable, built as a cosy base from which you can explore the narrow streets of the old town.

This home has been crafted with a love for comfort and bright colours. It's not the most modern or stylish home in our collection, but we liked the small touches that bring out the cosy character and The Xylophone's central location. As the name suggests, this home used to be part of a convent. Even though it was centuries ago, the building has retained some of the original features – there's a slightly lower ceiling than we're used to, shuttered windows, and beautiful wooden floors. You'll also spot the unusual criss-cross beams synonymous with Lisbon's Pombaline architectural style. At the same time, it's been smartly modernized in bright whites, creating a cool and contemporary feel. There's a well-equipped kitchen (although you happen to be within walking distance of many excellent restaurants) and a stylish, minimal shower room. Located in the upscale hills of Lapa, you'll be slightly further from Praça do Comércio, but you'll be staying right on Rua São Bento – famous for antique shopping.
