This Caldas de Aregos home is perfect for a relaxing break in Portugal. It’s surrounded by nature in the Douro region, where you can take a cruise along the river and discover local vineyards. If you’re anything like us, you’ll spend most of your time outside, swimming in the private pool and lounging in the sunshine. There’s a barbecue for alfresco dining, and a fully-equipped kitchen inside. We love the blend of traditional features like wood-beamed ceilings with a bohemian vibe – this is a charming and comfortable space to call home.

There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. But there’s also fun to be had at home on a rainy afternoon – challenge the group to a championship of billiards and table football and may the best team win.

A stay in this modern villa combines rural relaxation and keeping active all at once. Those that like to stick to a fitness schedule (or those that just want to splash about) can make use of the private indoor swimming pool, lined with loungers. There’s a saltwater sauna for afters, or perhaps you just want to head up to the terrace for a sundowner. On the same site, you’ll find a state-of-the-art gym, football field and tennis court too. There’s an element of fun to this home as well, with a children’s play park in the grounds and a full-size snooker table in one of the lounges.

That’s right, “one of” the lounges. There are three to choose from inside – the grand, chandeliered main lounge set around a fireplace, a snug with an upright piano for a sing-along, and the laid-back games room with its own bar. Bedrooms are spacious and retain an air of class with dark wood headboards. Our favourite has to be the wood-clad bedroom with trinkets and curios scattered across built-in shelves.

In terms of location, you’re in the rural area just outside Porto, yet just a fifteen-minute drive to the restaurants, historic sights and buzzing nightlife of the city centre. If you fancy a day at the beach, Arcozelo is just a ten-minute drive away.

Sitting in the middle of vineyards in the celebrated Portuguese wine region of Dão, this stone manor house is just the place for a peaceful getaway. The surrounding farm has been in action since Roman times, as evidenced by the ancient trough – or lagar – in which grapes were trodden that can still be seen on the site. 

By contrast, the home is a more recent addition and its interior has received a substantial amount of care and attention in recent years. As you take your first tour around the rooms, you're greeted by strikingly contemporary furnishings and finishes everywhere you look, whether it's the sleek fireplace, bright white kitchen or minimalist dinner table next to a textile artwork. 

There's a strong experiential element to this address, too. The host can help arrange a welcome basket, wine tastings and brunches full of local produce, or yoga sessions and bicycle rental in case you feel the need to work up an appetite beforehand. In the surrounding area, there are lots of quaint villages and stretches of countryside to explore on foot, too.

Located in Madalena, Porto this fantastic apartment is just a short three-minute walk to the nearest beach meaning you can spend many hours relaxing on the soft, golden sands, listening to the soothing wave sounds, or even braving a dip in the ocean waters. Why not treat yourself to a breakfast delivery and begin your mornings here enjoying a continental breakfast on the balcony as the sea breeze caresses your skin?

Then, grab your beach essentials and head to one of the perfect beaches – many of which are Blue Flag certified. If you’re feeling up to it, go for a long, leisurely walk along the coast to reach the chapel of Senhor da Pedra – just over an hour away on foot – which dates back to the seventeenth century. Or, hop in the car and head to Porto – a twenty-minute drive away – where you will find many well-known sights including the Cathedral and the world-famous bookshop, Livraria Lello. 

In the evening, however, you won’t need to go far from home to find great restaurants which are reachable in as little as five minutes on foot, or supermarkets for food shopping if you’d rather cook at home. We would love to end each day here with a glass of Port wine on the balcony to enjoy the last of the views as the sun sets and night descends.
