There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. And with two living rooms as well as an elegant dining room, this is the perfect setting to relax and indulge in life’s simple pleasures. So whether you’re sipping a glass of local wine by the fire, playing a game of cards or simply admiring the views, it's easy to settle in and make this space your own. 

Outside, you’ll find the garden transports you to an instant state of relaxation. From sunrise to sunset, this is an idyllic place to watch the sky transform whilst swimming in the heated pool or enjoying drinks on the terrace. And for an authentic taste of Portuguese living, you’ll find perfectly positioned tables for al fresco dining as well as a majestic wine cellar –  a striking setting for a celebratory dinner. 

The owners have also transformed one of the old farm buildings into a gym. With fitness machines sitting alongside old stone troughs (where grapes were once pressed), this might be one of the most unique workout locations we’ve ever seen. 

Days can be spent hiking and cycling across this beautiful countryside – the village of Mesao Frio is just a short drive away, while the beautiful city of Porto is less than an hour away.

A stay in this modern villa combines rural relaxation and keeping active all at once. Those that like to stick to a fitness schedule (or those that just want to splash about) can make use of the private indoor swimming pool, lined with loungers. There’s a saltwater sauna for afters, or perhaps you just want to head up to the terrace for a sundowner. On the same site, you’ll find a state-of-the-art gym, football field and tennis court too. There’s an element of fun to this home as well, with a children’s play park in the grounds and a full-size snooker table in one of the lounges.

That’s right, “one of” the lounges. There are three to choose from inside – the grand, chandeliered main lounge set around a fireplace, a snug with an upright piano for a sing-along, and the laid-back games room with its own bar. Bedrooms are spacious and retain an air of class with dark wood headboards. Our favourite has to be the wood-clad bedroom with trinkets and curios scattered across built-in shelves.

In terms of location, you’re in the rural area just outside Porto, yet just a fifteen-minute drive to the restaurants, historic sights and buzzing nightlife of the city centre. If you fancy a day at the beach, Arcozelo is just a ten-minute drive away.

It’s within walking distance of many attractions, such as Mercado do Bolhão and the Chapel of Souls, with its azulejo tiled façade. Being in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage City, expect to hear some street noise during your stay, though. If you’re here on business, there’s a desk in the bedroom (there’s only one bedroom here – guests three and four will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living space).

Bonfim is known as one of the city’s most traditional areas, full of local shops, small cafes, and authentic Portuguese restaurants – there’s also a real sense of community. When you want to see more of Porto, you need only walk a short distance to Campo 24 de Agosto station to hop on the metro. The villa is attractive, warm, and welcoming. And if you’re visiting as a group of three, keep in mind that one guest will be sleeping on the sofa bed. The streets around this place are packed with restaurants and bars, yet the living room faces an internal courtyard for a bit of peace. The main bedroom leads out to a private balcony which is great for a breath of fresh air, despite the lack of view.

Take your pick from Praça da Ribeira Square, the neoclassical Bolsa Palace or Douro River – it's all just a short stroll away. Back home, the courtyard garden is a nice touch for morning coffees, even though there's not much of a view. However, the Juliet balcony windows overlooking Porto's rooftops from the living room and main bedroom make up for that.

Set in a quiet corner of Ribeira, the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira Square, and neoclassical Bolsa Palace are all just a short stroll away. The apartment is on the second floor with no lift, so you'll be getting mini-workouts here, and the lack of a wardrobe in the bedroom area might be an inconvenience. That said, the fully-equipped kitchen and self-check-in add make life easier. The French doors are ideal if you prefer a fresh breeze to air conditioning, too. We’ve fallen hard for this Bonfim apartment boasting a suntrap terrace. One of two apartments belonging to a historic townhouse, the home is set across two light-filled floors. While you can’t fault the fresh interiors, it’s worth noting the last guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the lounge, and the kitchen is compact, so don't expect to be rustling up much food here. Set in the heart of Bonfim, this corner of Porto is charming. All the hotspots, including Rua de Santa Catarina and Bolhão, are within easy walking distance. Or hop on the Metro (just 500 metres from your door) to explore further afield.

With a well-equipped kitchen, it's ideal for extended stays, though you'll need to climb stairs to reach this first-floor home as there's no lift. The terrace doesn't have its own furniture, though you can grab the dining area chairs if you want to enjoy your morning drink in the sun. With tram lines, Marquês Metro Station, and buses all seconds away, you're very well connected to the rest of the city.
