A garden brimming with trees and shrubs will be hard to ignore, but even harder still is the private pool set in the centre of it. When you’re not at the beach, this will be your prime defence against the sun’s warming gaze. Grab a cold drink as you lounge poolside, or escape to the porch where you can choose between the swing chair, hammock, or very plush garden chair to recline in. Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

As soon as you step through the door of this contemporary apartment of lofty proportions there’s a soothing atmosphere. Designed with Scandinavian influences in mind, it’s a light-filled home that makes for a great Lisbon base. There’s plenty of space to socialise – whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, hosting a glamourous dinner party in the separate dining room, or curling up on the sofa (or those cushy window seats) at the end of a busy day. We particularly love how spacious the bedrooms feel with outdoor balconies to let the fresh air flow through. Those looking to combine work and play will appreciate the dedicated desk area and there's plenty of space to unpack if you're staying in the city for a longer spell. Located in a charming and surprisingly quiet pocket of Lisbon, you’ll find lots of gourmet restaurants and high-end shops a few steps away, including El Corte Inglés shopping mall located just next door. Or for some culture, head to the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with its beautiful gardens, a mere five minutes away on foot. You’ll be hard pushed to find a better address than the heart of Chiado – especially when you’re mere metres from two of Lisbon’s most revered sites: The Carmo Convent and Santa Justa Lift. The home’s layout is perfect for friends or families who prioritise convenience – there’s a minimalist approach to the interior design with a focus on functionality. Still, your friendly host and their team keep this place spick and span and there are entertainment options for nights in. Step out of your front door and into a current of crowds, swirling around street performers and drifting towards the city’s grand Praça do Comércio square. You’re a ten-minute walk from Pink Street, famous for its eclectic selection of bars and Sol e Pesca restaurant, which received Anthony Bourdain’s seal of approval. The romantic Alfama neighbourhood is a fifteen-minute stroll to the east – be sure to stop for the views at the Miradouro Santa Luzia along the way.

You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. Rua Carmo is a great place to stay if you're in town for the first time. Your bucket list will likely contain the neighbouring Santa Justa Lift and Praça Luis de Camões, while the cobbled street itself is full of street performers and shops. Grandella Vinyl is a simple, relaxed home with abundant natural light and space. It's not our most luxurious offering, but we liked the abstract art prints and the view from the living room.

The charming, cobbled street is close to all the central sights, and you can see the Santa Justa Lift from the comfort of your living room – it and the striking ruins of the Carmo Convent are a two-minute walk away. Inside, the kitchen is designed as a sociable space with a sleek white breakfast bar inviting you to spread out the map and plan the day’s sightseeing over a cup of coffee. At the end of a day exploring winding cobbled streets, or an evening in the fado bars of the Portuguese capital (it’s all on your doorstep), the sofa invites you to kick back and indulge in a glass of red before bed.

Rua Carmo is one of the busiest shopping streets in Lisbon, and this home is located right on the iconic avenue. The building was built by Portuguese architect Siza Vieira, and still retains its gorgeous traditional facade. Inside, you'll find great natural light in the communal area, and views of the bustling street below. The decor is simple yet comfy, and there's plenty of space to cook, eat and relax here between sightseeing expeditions. Plus, the master bedroom has its very own kitchen, lounge area and bathroom – this individual studio within the apartment is great for those that want a little more privacy. The Santa Justa Lift is just a couple of minutes away – in fact, you can see it from some of the windows – and Castelo de São Jorge is less than a twenty-minute walk away. Explore the streets on foot, stopping in at the local boutiques and cafés as you go, and you're guaranteed to fall in love with this vibrant city.

This fantastic home is located in Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

The area between Avenida and Saldanha is home to a lot of offices, which attracts a young professionals crowd – and with it, a fun mixture of cafes and restaurants that will keep you busy locally. Let's Get Lexical is one of those hazy, sunny homes that will make you feel like you're waking up in a beach house, even though you'll be fifteen minutes away from the Sāo Jorge Castle. The text prints are a matter of personal taste, but if you're not bothered by their relentless inspiration, then you've probably found the one.

If you’re looking to experience an authentic side to Lisbon, this home in Graça is the ideal spot. From its polished wood floors to its sloped ceilings and large windows, chic meets comfort in this dazzlingly bright home. We love the living room’s French doors that open out onto a private balcony – ideal for mornings over coffee and a pastel de nata, or watching the sunset over the city’s red rooftops. The bedrooms, meanwhile, are simple yet quirkily fun, with pieces of fun modern art (hello Koons-style dog) that give them plenty of character. We were particularly fond of the master bedroom with its angled ceiling and steps leading out onto a viewing ledge with views of the neighbouring azulejo-clad buildings. With plenty of quiet corners to curl up in with a good book and a snazzy modern kitchen in which to cook up feasts (when you’re not sampling the local foodie hotspots), you’ll have everything you need for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a five-minute walk from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte viewing point with its glorious views, a fifteen-minute stroll from the Alfama and São Jorge Castle, as well as a twenty-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift.

Check yourself into this bright, clean, and modern Alfama apartment with a sunny, inviting atmosphere. The main space is well-lit and has views over the rooftops of a historic area of Lisbon – there’s even a little balcony, so you can take in the neighbourhood charm without setting foot outside. Exposed Pombalino beams offer a nice contrast to the flawlessly renovated interior. The bathroom is exceptionally sleek, with the polished concrete finish playing off nicely against the natural end grain wooden wall. Generous dining and living space makes this apartment somewhere you could spend a lot of time, and being right by the old town means there are plenty of sights to see right on your doorstep. So lace up your most comfortable trainers and get exploring the city's characterful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses interspersed with remarkable historical monuments. Within a couple of minutes, you'll be taking in panoramic views from miradors and exploring palace ruins, and rolling past Sé de Lisboa on one of the city's iconic yellow trams.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.

From the moment you step inside, it will make you feel like you're experiencing Portuguese history first hand, with the priceless addition of comfort that quite literally fit for the upper echelons of society. There are a couple of historically accurate cracks on the walls – but not enough to distract you from the beautiful art and antiques that will make your stay near Lisbon's opulent Avenida da Liberdade special.

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

Flight of Fancy

Located in Lisbon's elegant and bohemian Chiado neighbourhood, within a beautiful building facing the historic Teatro da Trindade, you'll find this spacious and impeccably decorated city centre apartment. The decor here is understated, so despite the modern styling, it doesn't clash with the period of the building. And with so much interior space, there's easily enough space for eight guests – and there's not a sofa bed in sight.
