While the building's exteriors are unremarkable, what this home may lack in charm more than makes up for with space. Well-suited to families, there's a large, well-equipped kitchen, a dedicated desk space for remote working, and a single bedroom just for little ones. The lengthy balcony is a nice touch too. Set back from the tourist bustle – you'll need to jump on the Lumiar Metro (twelve minutes on foot) when it's time to hit the sights. Or, if you'd rather drive, the free parking outside the apartment will be handy.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

This apartment might be modern, but the view is all old-world Lisbon. Inside, the living room feels like a 60s entertainer’s paradise, with velvet sofas, gallery-white walls and curious sculptures lining the room. Slide open the wall of glass and step out onto the terrace which has a view of modern Lisbon in one direction, and the orange roofs and townhouses of old in the other. The kitchen continues the charming retro theme, where lipstick red dining chairs offer space for the whole group. The master bedroom feels super plush with a purple velvet feature headboard, while the twin room is a cheerful shade of sunflower-yellow. We love the little nod to Portuguese tradition in the azelujo tiles in the family bathroom. This place is in the modern neighbourhood of Saldanha, a haven of sleek shopping streets and ultra-modern coffee shops. A twenty-minute stroll sees you in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama, crowned with a castle, or the grand streets of Baixa packed with local restaurants and bars.

It’s in the quiet neighbourhood of Alvalade, which is loved by local families – you won’t need to battle crowds of tourists in this part of town. Boasting a lively, multicultural atmosphere and plenty of parks, art galleries and eateries, Anjos is widely considered to be the trendiest neighbourhood in Lisbon. It’s also very well-connected, just fifteen minutes from the historic centre by public transport yet tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. You’ll find this stylish home here, nestled amidst pastel-hued Pombaline architecture and providing the perfect base for those seeking an authentic slice of the city.  

Inside, it’s a timeless canvas of high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling French windows, ushering in heaps of natural light. Though compact, the interior is exquisitely renovated and offers all the bells and whistles for a comfortable stay, including a modern kitchen and a cosy mezzanine bedroom. However, the real highlight is undoubtedly the little balcony. Drenched in sunlight and furnished with a table and chairs, it's a lovely spot for alfresco breakfasts in the sun. Spend mornings roosted here, sipping coffee amidst the terracotta-tiled rooftops before a stroll through Eduardo VII Park, just seventeen minutes away on foot.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.

From the red brick facade of the 19th-century bullring of Campo Pequeno, it’s hard to believe that just an eight-minute walk would take you to such a deluxe, modern apartment. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Just a two-minute walk from Lisbon’s beautiful Praça das Flores, this home in the heart of Principe Real is an ideal base for those looking for a truly relaxing city stay. Location might be the most important consideration when you’re booking an escape to the city, but with this home in the heart of Lisbon that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Put your photography skills to the test as you try to capture the vibrance of the city as you make the twenty-three-minute walk to the monumental 1940 Fonte Luminosa. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Wherever your feet take you, you can always head back to this homely oasis when you need to put them up and simply relax.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

Sitting just a three-minute walk from lively Pink Street and a stone’s throw from the Douro River, this design-focused apartment offers a stylish stay in Lisbon’s cultural and historic heart. 
 
It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. Fado-chic might be the best way to describe this home. Surrounded by artsy cafes and fado houses, Amália's interior contains several references to Portugal's musical soul. Like many older buildings in Lisbon, it doesn't have the biggest windows, so you might find yourself spending a lot of time on the closed balcony – or one of the many green spaces around Principe Real, where you can snap some of the best photos of the city.

Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Staying this close to Praça do Comércio is great if you've only got a few days to immerse yourself in the city. Baixa is a treasury of sights, although it comes with a caveat of authenticity – the area is usually buzzing with tourists, and you'll have to travel a little if you want a more local feel. Green Creek is an immaculate home that simply feels high-end. The furniture is elegant, the natural light is fantastic, the design vision is coherent, and we loved the preserved gaiolas pombalinas that separate the dining from the living room areas.

Nestled in Avenidas Novas, you’ll find yourself surrounded by green space when you stay at this home. This is an ideal base whether you’re in Lisbon for business or pleasure, and with a dedicated desk area, remote working is a breeze. If you’re not tempted out to explore by the fresh air and greenery of nearby Parque Eduardo VII, you can soak up the Mediterranean sun at home. With a communal pool and rooftop terrace at your disposal, you can catch some rays and drink in the cityscape at the same time.

A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

Retro Rita

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.


Marquis Cross

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Situated in the Alvalade neighbourhood of Lisbon, you’ll be within a short stroll from the Jardim do Campo Grande Park and Avenida de Roma with its array of books, jewellery and clothing stores. Other places within walking distance include the University of Lisbon and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. The public transport links are great here, so reaching the city centre is easy too. Back at this beach-themed apartment, there’s a comfy living room with a desk for when you need to work from home and there’s a separate well-equipped kitchen. Another bonus of this place is there’s a convenient designated parking space with this home.

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

Flight of Fancy

Bookworms listen up – this home showcases such a huge amount and vast range of books, you'll absolutely never get bored. With reads in all different languages, you'll be captivated by the vast variety of literature decorating the home. Just remember to leave the apartment every once in a while, because Lisbon is at your doorstep and you're positioned in one of the most central, picturesque and safe neighbourhoods of the city. Stroll just two minutes and you'll arrive at the Amoreiras Garden – a firm favourite hang out spot for the locals. And with charming cafes, street art, trendy second-hand stores and one of Lisbon's best chocolate shops all within walking proximity of your home, you don't have to venture too far to lap up the best parts of Portuguese local living here. 

By the Books

Situated in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, you’ll find an array of attractions nearby. Miradouro da Santa Catarina is three minutes on foot, Mercado da Ribeira is an eleven-minute stroll and the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk away. The stop for the famous Tram 28 is not far too. You don’t need to go anywhere though to enjoy beautiful views over the neighbourhood – just take them in from the home's small balcony, a glass of Portuguese wine in hand. The bedrooms' Juliet balconies are a nice touch here too, perfect for waking up to the Lisbon sunshine each morning. 

Lisbon in the Sun

At the top of the Avenida de Liberdade, Parque Eduardo VII is a gorgeous, green beacon of the Santo Antonio district. And with the annual Lisbon Book Fair taking place here every August, this cultural hub doesn’t just offer lush lawns and perfect views of the Tagus. Eight minutes away on foot, this apartment (like the nearby park) is yet another example of a serene oasis in the middle of this vibrant city.

Without any typical Portuguese features, this home is in a world of its own. The host’s Saharan-influenced decorations create a relaxing atmosphere that transports you into nature. We love the cacti alongside wicker furnishings and rugged, handmade tapestries on the walls. Then ornate hanging lamps bring a desert vibe to the dining area, where the entire space is complemented perfectly by a sandy colour palette.

Kick back on the sofa and put the record player on while you settle into your new surroundings. As music softly plays, you might find yourself gazing at the geometric, monochrome artworks on display. Or when you need to ground yourself back in reality, take a look into the four arched mirrors – your reflection would look even better with a glass of douro in hand.

Four Arches

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Poetic Form

Less than a five-minute stroll away from Praça do Comércio, Lisbon Cathedral and the River Tagus, this apartment is perfectly placed for exploring. Stroll down Rua Augusta with a coffee and pastry, pop in and out of the independent shops nearby or grab a bite to eat at the array of restaurants on your doorstep. Whatever you fancy – be it historical monuments or lively bars – chances are, it's within walking distance. When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. Our favourite feature has to be the Juliet balconies on the windows – fling open the doors and admire the views of Lisbon's hills and charming streets below.
