When you’re not at the beach, this will be your prime defence against the sun’s warming gaze. Designed with Scandinavian influences in mind, it’s a light-filled home that makes for a great Lisbon base. There’s plenty of space to socialise – whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, hosting a glamourous dinner party in the separate dining room, or curling up on the sofa (or those cushy window seats) at the end of a busy day. We particularly love how spacious the bedrooms feel with outdoor balconies to let the fresh air flow through. Those looking to combine work and play will appreciate the dedicated desk area and there's plenty of space to unpack if you're staying in the city for a longer spell. Located in a charming and surprisingly quiet pocket of Lisbon, you’ll find lots of gourmet restaurants and high-end shops a few steps away, including El Corte Inglés shopping mall located just next door. Or for some culture, head to the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with its beautiful gardens, a mere five minutes away on foot. Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.


Blimunda

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Check yourself into this bright, clean, and modern Alfama apartment with a sunny, inviting atmosphere. The main space is well-lit and has views over the rooftops of a historic area of Lisbon – there’s even a little balcony, so you can take in the neighbourhood charm without setting foot outside. Exposed Pombalino beams offer a nice contrast to the flawlessly renovated interior. The bathroom is exceptionally sleek, with the polished concrete finish playing off nicely against the natural end grain wooden wall. Generous dining and living space makes this apartment somewhere you could spend a lot of time, and being right by the old town means there are plenty of sights to see right on your doorstep. So lace up your most comfortable trainers and get exploring the city's characterful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses interspersed with remarkable historical monuments. Within a couple of minutes, you'll be taking in panoramic views from miradors and exploring palace ruins, and rolling past Sé de Lisboa on one of the city's iconic yellow trams.

With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. As far as stellar first impressions go, this home certainly delivers. You'll be smitten as soon as you arrive at its elegant azulejo-tiled entryway and ascend its sweeping staircase. The interior is a masterclass in design, striking the perfect balance between contemporary comfort and authentic charm.

With a commanding position looking out over Lisbon's red-tiled roofs, this Alfama apartment offers a dash of urban fun with plenty of functionality. The home's corner position in the building means there is natural light from several sides here, and we love the small balcony – with the stunning views, this is no generic I-could-be-anywhere home, as you'll definitely know you're in Lisbon. Outside, the Alfama district has plenty of history to explore, and you're not far from the coast either.

The homely interiors are equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, while the free parking is an added bonus – although if you want to travel further afield, there’s plenty of public transport close by.

This playful pad offers a central location and places you in a prime spot for exploring Lisbon's cultural landmarks on foot. Even for ventures further afield, you'll find Graça bus stop is only a minute's walk away. We think it's ideal for families and groups of friends, with a private outside dining terrace complete with a barbecue, as well as plenty of indoor space to relax. The colourful bedrooms will have you up and raring to go come morning – and just as well, with so much to see and do nearby. Note that there's no lift here, so be prepared to climb three flights of stairs to reach the apartment.

A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and

We love the traditional Portuguese tiles in the living room and bedroom, which contrast beautifully with the modern furnishings. Later on, if you don't want to eat out, rustle up some bacalhau à brás (scrambled eggs with salt cod, potatoes and olives) in the bright kitchen. Then get some rest in the stylish bedroom before starting another exciting day in Lisbon.
