Located thirty minutes away from the Arrábida Natural Park, this home is not only within close proximity to the protected area that covers the southernmost margin of the Setúbal Peninsula of Portugal, but also the beach that lies within it. Consecutively voted one of the best beaches in Europe, the Galapos is an inviting sandy strip, adjacent to the deep blue waters of the Atlantic, protected by rocky cliffs. Spend the day here sunbathing or splashing in the salty surf before returning home to find your own little oasis waiting for you. 

A garden brimming with trees and shrubs will be hard to ignore, but even harder still is the private pool set in the centre of it. When you’re not at the beach, this will be your prime defence against the sun’s warming gaze. Grab a cold drink as you lounge poolside, or escape to the porch where you can choose between the swing chair, hammock, or very plush garden chair to recline in. Bring out snacks when you refill your drink and stay out even as the day gives way to a balmy evening.

The first thing to bring up when talking about Flying Fish has to be the location. It’s right in the middle of Baixa, with Chiado also very nearby, which is more or less the perfect spot from which to explore the city. The flat’s welcoming – individual without ever seeming brash. It’s not perfect, and as you’d expect from any home that’s been visited even a couple of times, there were some inevitable signs of wear (a few scuff marks, nothing serious), but when you run the positives past the negatives, it’s not even close.

This home has a few exquisite architectural features – the original exposed brick wall, French doors, marble details, and other touches that reveal that this home was designed by an architect. The communal areas have a pleasant upscale vibe and excellent natural light, which gives Solar Volto a homey feel, even though this is a full-time rental property. Located on Rua de São José you'll be surrounded by design boutiques and upscale restaurants, making this a perfect stay out for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Rua Carmo is a great place to stay if you're in town for the first time. Your bucket list will likely contain the neighbouring Santa Justa Lift and Praça Luis de Camões, while the cobbled street itself is full of street performers and shops. Grandella Vinyl is a simple, relaxed home with abundant natural light and space. It's not our most luxurious offering, but we liked the abstract art prints and the view from the living room.

This modern studio flat perfectly suits a solo traveller or a couple wanting to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture and history. It's not the biggest, but it still has everything you need for a fuss-free stay in the capital, including a quaint kitchenette, super comfortable bed and sleek bathroom with a luxe rainfall shower. You can even spot the top of the Basilica da Estrela out the window – a rarity for a ground floor flat. But the best part about this place is the excellent location. Bairro Alto, known as Lisbon's bohemian district, is home to trendy restaurants, lively Fado bars, old-style cafes, art galleries and independent shops. Check out the many beautiful churches sprinkled across this vibrant neighbourhood, or hop on one of the iconic trams and weave your way up into the hills. This is the perfect spot to go exploring – you're only a four-minute walk from Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and just a twenty-minute stroll from the historic city centre.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. Although, with a host of eateries and family-run restaurants right on your doorstep, we think you'll be dining out most evenings.

Historic Alfama, with its medieval warren of streets, is just a twelve-minute walk from this modern home, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are a fifteen-minute saunter. The harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, on the other hand, is a mere four-minute stroll and is surrounded by an array of eateries – your host can make restaurant reservations for you if you wish. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. Located on the Rua Carmo, Grandella Boots is a great home for first-time visitors – especially if you're keen to explore Lisbon on foot. Situated above one of the city’s most vibrant avenues, the huge windows are perfectly primed for people-watching. Street vendors to and fro along the thoroughfare, locals weave through the throngs, and performers draw in gaggles of curious onlookers. Inside, the furnishings are modest but comfortable and do well not to distract you from the fantastic views – you can see the ruins of the Carmo convent on one side of the apartment, and the Santa Justa Elevator on the other. After a pastry and coffee for breakfast, slip into the hubbub and make your way over to Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk downhill, or lace up your walking shoes and take the twelve-minute hike uphill to Bairro Alto for retro boutiques and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. Should you fancy escaping the crowds, you’re a ten-minute walk to Cais do Sodré terminal where you can catch a ferry to the other side of the Tagus – waterfront restaurants and fine sunsets await.

With a fantastic location, just a three-minute walk to the picturesque neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, a culinary hotspot, this stylish apartment has a wealth of bars, restaurants and historic architecture right on its doorstep. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, on the other hand, Chiado with its chic boutiques, is only a ten-minute stroll away. You can even walk to some of the city’s iconic attractions such as Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle and Miradouro Portas do Sol in under thirty minutes. If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Or, to get the most out of your trip, let the concierge organise tickets and experiences for you. Back at this modern home – there’s a lot we adore about this place, from the wooden floors and inspirational quotes to the gorgeous bathroom and little windows with cute shutters. The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. So, relax with a glass of wine at the dining table and enjoy a Portuguese feast. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

As soon as you step through the door of this contemporary apartment of lofty proportions there’s a soothing atmosphere. Designed with Scandinavian influences in mind, it’s a light-filled home that makes for a great Lisbon base. There’s plenty of space to socialise – whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, hosting a glamourous dinner party in the separate dining room, or curling up on the sofa (or those cushy window seats) at the end of a busy day. We particularly love how spacious the bedrooms feel with outdoor balconies to let the fresh air flow through. Those looking to combine work and play will appreciate the dedicated desk area and there's plenty of space to unpack if you're staying in the city for a longer spell. Located in a charming and surprisingly quiet pocket of Lisbon, you’ll find lots of gourmet restaurants and high-end shops a few steps away, including El Corte Inglés shopping mall located just next door. Or for some culture, head to the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with its beautiful gardens, a mere five minutes away on foot. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.

Wake up with breakfast in the bright living space, tucking into Portuguese pastries as terracotta rooftops and yellow and pink buildings glow with a radiance unique to Lisbon. Embrace the city’s easy-going ambience on your terrace. Sit back in the comfy chairs and relax with a freshly squeezed orange juice – or glass of local green wine, perhaps – and lose yourself to a page-turner. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

This flat sits in an authentic, azulejo-tiled building on a quiet street just off of Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main boulevard. You’ll be walking distance from a host of attractions – fifteen minutes from Convento do Carmen, fifteen from the Botanical Gardens and eighteen from the trendy Barrio Alto. Returning home, you’ll find original stone arches and tasteful vintage furnishings in the lobby that perfectly match the exterior traditional setting. Inside, stone accents bring the same authenticity to the living space, while bright pops of colour add a touch of warmth and cosiness to the home. Sit back on the sofa, gather around the table for a meal or take a luxurious soak in the marble bathroom – with its brilliant location and thoughtful interior, this is a great choice for newbies and oldies to the city.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

Check yourself into this bright, clean, and modern Alfama apartment with a sunny, inviting atmosphere. The main space is well-lit and has views over the rooftops of a historic area of Lisbon – there’s even a little balcony, so you can take in the neighbourhood charm without setting foot outside. Exposed Pombalino beams offer a nice contrast to the flawlessly renovated interior. The bathroom is exceptionally sleek, with the polished concrete finish playing off nicely against the natural end grain wooden wall. Generous dining and living space makes this apartment somewhere you could spend a lot of time, and being right by the old town means there are plenty of sights to see right on your doorstep. So lace up your most comfortable trainers and get exploring the city's characterful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses interspersed with remarkable historical monuments. Within a couple of minutes, you'll be taking in panoramic views from miradors and exploring palace ruins, and rolling past Sé de Lisboa on one of the city's iconic yellow trams.

With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six.
