It's hard not to pinch yourself as you gaze down from The Scarlet Letter, at the charming vineyards and olive groves on the hill slopes of Douro Valley. There are several nooks to hang out by the pool and we especially love the quirky classroom setting in the gaming room that nudges towards the home's past as a school for kids. Secluded and pristine, a short drive takes you to the town of Pinhão, renowned for its vineyards and high quality Port, while a relaxing boat ride down the river gives you glimpses of the native wildlife. Still further away, the town of Provesende is a peek into the historical architecture and life of this picturesque region. When you're done with the day, recharge by the fireplace with a port and a plateful lovingly cooked by your own personal chef right at home.

The Scarlet Letter

Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions. 

Regrowth & Rebirth

These views will take your breath away. Overlooking the Douro River, its bridges, and the rolling hills beyond, this home is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature – and it's only about an hour or so from Porto. Outside, you'll have a private pool, hot tub, and river-facing terrace to enjoy. Indoors, modern design is accented by the panoramas. With a collection of en-suite bedrooms to choose from, you'll also be able to enjoy some privacy. And the best part? Breakfast and daily cleaning are included.


Pearl of the Valley

Imagine waking up in the morning, the sound of waves crashing in the near distance accompanied by the cawing of gulls or the delighted cries of children playing on the nearby beach. Open up the curtains and the coastal sunshine beams in, giving off just a slight morning warmth. Then you know – you're really on holiday, and the whole day stretches out before you. 

This home offers you the perfect location to experience those perfect moments, and much more. Step out onto the roof terrace to enjoy your morning coffee before setting off for the beach to make the most of a day filled with sun, sea, sand, and plenty of unforgettable memories with your nearest and dearest. 

Or, if you've had enough of the unspoiled sands of Viana do Castelo, then head into the charming trading town itself, where you'll find pretty backstreets lined with cafes, bars, and restaurants as well as the Basílica de Santa Luzia. Trust us, its unique architecture is well worth seeing. Alternatively, those with a yearning for attractions of the natural kind can look forward to venturing out into the expansive, verdant hills of northern Portugal or even trying their hand at some bodyboarding in the Atlantic waters off the coast.

Castelo on the Hill

This villa in Moldes, Arouca is the ideal spot for a proper getaway with family and friends. You'll have privacy and seclusion here, with stunning mountain views from the private pool and outdoor seating area. The home can only be reached by car, so you'll want to hire one for your trip, but it's well worth it. You'll be exploring the area in no time, including the spectacular hiking trails of Arouca Geopark and the town's local restaurants. Indoors, every bedroom enjoys its own en-suite, and while the kitchen is on the smaller side, you'll have everything you need for whipping up delicious dinners.

The Green Tide

Nestled in the Costa Verde countryside, this stylish villa offers guests a tranquil retreat while still being just a short drive (4 km) of the port town of Caminha. Wake up to breathtaking views of the sea and Minho River, before getting up close and personal with the water yourself on a visit to the Praia de Moledo and Foz do Minho beaches. This home boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a seamless transition between these inside spaces and the outside amenities, namely the walled garden with private swimming pool and bean bags perfect for sunbathing.

Moredaria

This villa is a luxurious holiday home located in Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Guests can enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding area from the outdoor terraces and large swimming pool. The interior of the property features beautiful décor, including a spacious living room with comfortable seating and a dining room that is perfect for communal meals. The kitchen boasts traditional wooden cupboards and is fully equipped for guests to prepare their own meals. The ground floor has three bedrooms, two with king-sized beds and one with two single beds, while the upper level holds a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and an adjoining bedroom with two single beds. The villa also includes a games room, fitness area, and private parking. Nearby attractions include Quinta do Panascal winery and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Remedies.

The Well-Being

We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. From its sunny yellow facade complete with quaint panelled windows and traditional terracotta roof tiles to its elegant interior that retains many of its original, rustic features – not to mention the beautiful modern step-down swimming pool – we think it offers something truly unique and special for your holiday in this often-overlooked part of Portugal.

The indoor spaces of this home feel impressive and grand, and yet manage to exude a kind of homely warmth that's welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms, in particular, are a favourite of ours. Awake as the gentle morning light begins to seep in through those large French windows with stained glass detailing and feel immediately enveloped in the majesty of these rooms, as the high ceilings and gorgeous furnishings create a sense of luxury. Coffee out on the terrace anyone? 

The living and dining rooms, too, have an undeniable opulence, giving off an irresistible old-world glamour. Make the most of the sense of occassion by coming together for a special meal, or simply enjoying one another's company in the effortless serenity of these spaces.

When you do fancy getting out of the villa, then you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do in the local area. Explore the local town of Esposende where you will find fantastic fish restaurants serving up the freshest seafood. Or, make the short 30-minute drive to the historic city of Oporto – the centre of which is classified as a World Heritage Site. The sand beaches of this part of the Portuguese coastline are under four kilometres away too, so grab the suncream and a beach towel and get out there for a day of sun, sea, and unbridled relaxation (as well as some high-octane watersports if you like). In the mood for more activity? Then there is both golf and horse riding on offer in the local area.

A Farmhouse with Finesse

You'll have your pick of outdoor spaces and a private swimming pool to make the most of this villa's Douro Valley views. Fitting, as this spot in Peso da Regua is famous for its picturesque countryside and ancient vineyards. While the interiors certainly aren't as eye-catching as the surrounding scenery, each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, and larger groups have the option to add five extra beds to sleep up to fifteen guests. As an added bonus, breakfast deliveries of fresh bread and pastries are included – what a great way to start your day.

Douro Duet

Amid the rolling hills and vineyards of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, this home opens its doors to a restorative countryside escape. Inspired by organic living, the clever owners have created a simple sanctuary where locally sourced furnishings and art sit alongside contemporary comforts. The garden features a private infinity pool and access to the Corgo River. There’s also a rustic wine cellar which can be used for events (upon request), and an independent studio sleeping four guests – making this the ideal location for groups to enjoy privacy and quality time together. 

The Gentle Earth

Nestled in the picturesque vineyards and olive groves of the Douro Valley, with stunning views over the landscape, this gorgeous villa waits to welcome you. An open-plan layout makes it easy to keep an eye on the kids while you play a game of snooker or cook up a mouth-watering meal in the fully-equipped kitchen. Dine alfresco on the covered terrace and let them tire themselves out in the pool during the afternoon. In the meantime, work on that perfect tan from the sun loungers, drink in hand as you look out over the impressive valley. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in, so you can admire clear blue skies or a peachy sunset while getting some remote work done at the dining table or enjoying a game of chess in the recreation room.

The charming town of Pinhão is just a scenic walk or a short drive away, known for its delectable wines and rich port heritage. Relish in tours of local wineries and restaurants, before heading down the Douro River on a boat tour, or packing up the car and driving a little further for a day at the beach. When you return home, sink into the bubbles of the Jacuzzi under the stars.

Bridge Over Tranquil Water

Situated near one of Portugal’s oldest towns, this home offers peace and tranquillity. There are plenty of grounds to explore, including a pond (our favourite area), mature woodland and numerous paths leading into the countryside. Alternatively, simply unwind next to the private pool or admire the enchanting garden views from the veranda of the main house and the cottage.

This place is ideal for a large group of friends or family – there’s a charming separate cottage with a twin bedroom and kitchenette too, which provides a perfect space for those in search of a tad more privacy. If you love traditional interiors, then you’re in luck – from the grandfather clock in the dining room to the farmhouse-style kitchen and antique beds, this home is full of old-world character.

Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. The country’s only national park, the mountainous nature reserve of Peneda Geres National Park, is just a forty-minute drive away and offers prehistoric remains and walking trails, as well as golden eagles, deer and wolves – oh my.
