Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. The terrace is only accessible via the upstairs bedroom, but if that's not too much of an inconvenience, then you're cordially invited to experience the view (and the comfort) for yourself.

Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

This minimalist home is in the heart of Porto, just a fifteen-minute walk from the narrow, bar-filled streets of Ribeira and the grand Avenida dos Aliados. Not many duplexes boast their own private garden in the city centre. This one has a secluded sunny lawn and patio, surrounded by stone walls for the utmost privacy. It’s the perfect spot for a drop of the city’s famed port wine at sunset. Inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room has tall traditional windows letting in tons of natural light. Soft greys and pinks set a cool, calm atmosphere. There’s a separate sitting room with a dedicated remote workspace, should you need to catch up on emails. Bedrooms are housed in thick white stone walls typical of Portuguese design, keeping things cool in summer and cosy in the colder months.

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

This bright and welcoming apartment makes for an excellent base in Porto. It was only finished in 2022 so it’s new and fresh, with crisp white walls and stylish decor. It’s ideal for a couple looking for a modern home in Porto. 

You’ll love standing on the balcony each morning, soaking up the sun as you sip your coffee. Prepare a quick breakfast in the petite open-plan kitchen before heading out to see the sights. This home is centrally located, so you’ll be able to easily explore on foot and by using the metro. You’re within easy walking distance of Casa da Música, ideal if you’re planning on catching a show during your stay.

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield. 

A Little Piece of Porto

Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. It’s the ideal position to explore the city on foot, with the ancient azulejo-tiled churches and baroque towers punctuating orange-roofed buildings. On your doorstep, you’ve got family-run restaurants, charming coffee shops and bakeries serving oven-fresh custard tarts. Plus, the famous wine warehouses that line the Douro at Ribeira are just a short stroll away.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Throwing these open, you can listen to the chatter from the street waking up in the morning while dozing in the comfy bed before settling in at plush velvet chairs for a classic breakfast of custard tarts and coffee.

If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

From here, you'll have easy access to the central sights and the walk down to the riverside is filled with great bars and restaurants where you can refuel.

A functional studio flat in central Porto, this home is a comfortable place to lay weary heads after several glasses of port. Although the kitchenette isn't suited for extravagant meals, you'll find everything you need for light bites – combined with the washing machine, the home is ideal for extended stays. Poet's Hideout is an elegant split-level home in the tourist centre of Porto – but one of the things we love most about it is that it's still peaceful and quiet. The host has invested a lot of effort and brainpower to make the original architectural features work with modern furniture, and the end result is stunning. This home is closer to an aparthotel than a characterful private residence, but that does come with its perks, like daily cleaning and breakfast, which are included in your stay.

This tranquil apartment is a true haven away from the hustle and bustle of Porto. Whether you're in the city to see friends, tick off your sightseeing list, or simply enjoy a break from everyday life, you'll feel right at home in this fully renovated 1950s art deco house built by Mario Augusto Ferreira de Abreu.

We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

Ideal as a base for a couple or solo traveller, just bear in mind that you’ll need to climb stairs to the third floor to access the apartment. Still, when you reach your home, your eyes will be drawn to the private balcony. Sure, it’s not the biggest and the views are only of the street below, but it’s still a lovely sun-kissed spot for a glass of wine at the end of the day.

Hidden behind the blue facade of a beautiful traditional building, you'll find this gorgeous apartment. With a great location just ten minutes away from the riverside and plenty of space for your guests to relax, it's a great choice for groups eager to explore the wonders of Porto. 

Push open the front door and you'll be greeted by a bright and airy space with huge windows that flood the room with natural light. There are several quirky touches to admire, from the geometric patterns on the armchairs to the intriguing prints on the walls. And, on sunny mornings, you'll love sipping your morning coffee outside on the balcony as you plan your itinerary for the day to come. 

Wander down to the riverside and admire the bridges the city is famous for, or take a boat trip for a new perspective on the city. A ten-minute walk will bring you into the old town, where you can enjoy a tasting in one of the port bars. We especially love the attention to detail here, with objets d'art and chic art prints adorning the bookshelves and walls. It's both minimalist and yet there's a cool and creative feel to the space, reflecting Bonfirm's young, hip crowd. Practically the home ticks all the right boxes, with four comfy bedrooms, each with direct balcony access, and there's a dedicated office space for those visiting on business. 

Location-wise, it's a great spot for those in town for sightseeing, with Santa Catarina Street, Bolhão, and Avenida dos Aliados all a short walk from your doorstep. And when it's time for dinner, there's no better place for a romantic meal or late-evening stroll than along Cais da Ribeira, within walking distance of the apartment.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Inside, there’s a stylish living area for relaxing after a day of exploring, as well as a private balcony for a glass of Portuguese wine in the evenings. While the kitchenette is only equipped with the very basics, you certainly won’t go hungry here thanks to the home's close proximity to countless eateries, cafes and bars.

When you’re ready to embark on your sightseeing ventures, begin with a stroll to the historic Porto Cathedral, before wandering along the banks of the Douro River at Cais da Ribeira. After a quick stop for lunch in the sunshine, we recommend heading to the striking Livraria Lello bookshop – said to have inspired parts of the Harry Potter movies, it's well worth a visit.

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.
