We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.

For further-afield sights, you need only walk 400 metres to Bolhão Station to hop on the metro. The apartment is petite but charming, with a beautiful carved ceiling that draws the eye. The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

This unique studio apartment is tucked away in one of Porto’s most vibrant streets, Rua das Flores. It’s an excellent central base, within easy walking distance of Porto’s main attractions and lively squares. Inside the apartment, you’ll find a charming space ideal for two. It’s a studio but there’s still a decent amount of room, with a separate sitting area and a workspace. It’s sleek and modern, with everything you might need for a comfortable city break.

Located on the iconic Rua do Almada, this apartment in downtown Porto has a great address. It’s within walking distance of many attractions, such as Mercado do Bolhão and the Chapel of Souls, with its azulejo tiled façade. Being in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage City, expect to hear some street noise during your stay, though. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.
