Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

We’re talking about Mercado do Bolhão (five-minutes on foot) and the majestic Clérigos Tower, an eight minute walk away. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

Set on the elegant Rua das Flores, this gorgeous two-bedroom flat offers you the perfect base to explore central Porto. Located up on the fourth floor, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas over the neighbourhood rooftops towards Porto's Romanesque cathedral.

Inside, the main open-plan living space offers more than enough space for four to unwind, dine and socialise in comfort. A large corner sofa is set right by the French doors. On warm days, you can open them up to the outside world and let the city atmosphere float in on the breeze. Elsewhere, there's a four-seater dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette.

Not only does it place you right in the heart of action, but you're also close to some of Porto's most majestic sights, including Sé do Porto and the Palácio da Bolsa – both no more than a five-minute walk – and the waterside Cais da Ribeira, a ten-minute stroll away.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

Make yourself at home in this stunning top-floor apartment situated in the heart of Porto. The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.

Bedrooms are housed in thick white stone walls typical of Portuguese design, keeping things cool in summer and cosy in the colder months.

Right in the heart of the city, this central apartment is ideally suited for those looking to visit the top sights and cultural attractions. Due to the location, there's potential for noise here. Light sleepers may want to pack earplugs. You're right by Ribeira, with the waterfront's restaurants, bars and cafes just a short walk away. There's limited living space and the kitchen is only suitable for preparing light bites, but it's a good pick for solo travellers or couples. You'll notice the colourful decor that creates a welcoming home, while the exposed stone is a nice touch. Whilst the apartment is housed in a building dating from the 18th century, it’s been completely renovated inside. One thing to note, though, at full capacity, two people will be on a sofa bed in the living space. Situated in one of Porto’s picturesque districts, Ribeira – this apartment boasts an enviable location too. You’ll find a maze of cobbled medieval alleys, cosy bars, and eateries serving traditional cuisine. Attractions nearby include the iconic D. Luís Bridge and the beautiful Bolsa Palace.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

Located on the iconic Rua do Almada, this apartment in downtown Porto has a great address. It’s within walking distance of many attractions, such as Mercado do Bolhão and the Chapel of Souls, with its azulejo tiled façade. Being in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage City, expect to hear some street noise during your stay, though. If you’re here on business, there’s a desk in the bedroom (there’s only one bedroom here – guests three and four will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living space).

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

You’ll find this apartment in downtown Porto, mere steps away from the city’s main squares and landmarks. Ideal as a base for a couple or solo traveller, just bear in mind that you’ll need to climb stairs to the third floor to access the apartment. Still, when you reach your home, your eyes will be drawn to the private balcony. Sure, it’s not the biggest and the views are only of the street below, but it’s still a lovely sun-kissed spot for a glass of wine at the end of the day.

Small porthole windows let in a little extra light and reveal the thick stone foundations of this old building. The decor is decidedly minimalist, with splashes of pop art on the walls. In the bedroom, cooling white walls and a generous queen-size bed guarantee a peaceful rest. A ten-minute walk along the river takes you to the wine bars of Ribeira and the beautiful sights of Porto’s UNESCO-protected historic centre.

Quay to My Heart

Cute and colourful, this apartment in the Sé neighbourhood offers a privileged position from which to explore the city. The Church of Saint Ildefonso is just a five-minute walk away, and the Mercado do Bolhão, the Livraria Lello bookshop and Porto Cathedral are all reachable on foot as well. There’s not much storage space in this studio-style pad, so you’ll want to pack light. But a generously sized kitchen offers flexibility with mealtimes when you’re not sampling the many local restaurants. And the large French windows are perfect for perching by with a glass of Port each evening.
