It's a great spot for exploring on foot, though there's plenty to love here besides the location. For starters, the coastal views are hard to beat. Another favourite is the hot tub – ideal for a sunset soak – while the terrace has alfresco dining covered. The design inside is modern and bright, with a collection of comfortable bedrooms to choose from. As the fifth bedroom boasts a trundle bed, we think this pad is best for eight adults and two children.

The second bedroom is snug and features a pull-out trundle ideal for children. But the garden is a nice bonus, with a private swimming pool, playground, and views across the countryside. Location-wise, this home sits just outside Colares. Head west, and you'll hit Praia da Adraga. Or, drive east to visit Sintra's magical palaces and colourful castles.

While it's clear from the simple design that this home is for rentals, the open-plan living space, private pool, and alfresco seating area are great for a family or group of friends who want to spend time together. At capacity, a guest will be on a sofa bed in one of the bedrooms, which we think is more suited to a child. The well-equipped kitchen makes cooking a breeze, though you'll find several eateries and cafes within walking distance if you prefer to let someone else do the work.

We think it works especially well for families who'd like to split into smaller groups – the two self-contained apartments and a separate bungalow can make that happen. With a tick on location, daily cleaning included, and the possibility for events, you can see why this one caught our eye.

This lovely Portuguese villa provides an idyllic spot to spend a holiday with your loved ones. The home boasts some great amenities, including a garden, complete with orchard and little stream, firewood oven and a private pool. But that's not all. Game-fanatics can challenge themselves with a board-game or game of snooker in the vintage-decorated games room, while others can catch up on their favourite Netflix show. The villa is located near various iconic beaches such as Praia Grande, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra. There's something here for everyone.

Prepare to have your breath taken away at this stunning coastal home, a six-minute drive from the town of Colares. In an elevated position, it's been designed to make the most of its epic sea views. Between its excellent amenities and the beach a short walk away, you'll be set up for a wonderful and relaxing stay. Start by taking a dip in one of your two pools – the infinity pool has spectacular views – and later move on to a game of football or tennis in your private court. Cook indoors or use the summer kitchen outside, barbecue some local fish and enjoy meals late into the night on the impressive terrace. We love the lived-in feel here, with eclectic art and comfortable furnishings. Many of the rooms have distractingly good views – none more so than the bedrooms on the top floor, where you can step out onto a balcony each morning and look out to sea. And youngsters are far from forgotten either. There's a play area indoors, with all sorts of toys and games, and outside you'll find a grassed playground. Grab your buckets and spades and there's a choice of beaches within a twenty-minute drive, along with beachside restaurants and bars.

A unique home in a stunning location, on the very top of a hill in Mafra, this restored windmill is a dream come true. One for escapists, dreamers and lovers of the outdoors, it's an eco-tourism offering like no other in our collection. Using renewable energy, it's a place to switch off your screens and soak up the simply unbelievable views.

Set in an ecological reserve, you'll be head and shoulders above everything else for miles in your very own windmill. Rescued by its current owners from a state of disrepair, they've cleverly converted it into a stylish home with 120 years of history. It even has a small but perfectly formed plunge pool.

On the ground floor you'll find a little kitchen, with all you'll really need to cook light meals at home, and a bathroom where – somehow – the owners have managed to plumb the tap into part of the building's exposed rock wall itself. Floating stairs carry you up to the living room level, where a third guest could sleep on a comfy sofa bed. And then it's up to the star of the show – the bedroom. With the top of the windmill and all its internal beams as a ceiling, this magical room feels as though its floating on top of the building. And it is, kind of. A narrow window goes right round the whole room, allowing you to see out from every angle.

By day pad around your terrace, sit on the swing, read in the shade or paddle in the pool. There's really no need to do anything more adventurous, but Lisbon is only fifty minutes away should you fancy a day trip.

Nestled away on large leafy grounds, based within the protected area of the Natural Park of Sintra Cascais, this home is ideal if you’re looking for a peaceful countryside stay, that still provides easy access to the beautiful and vibrant beaches of Praia Grande and Praia da Adraga. You’re also within close reach of the small village of Almoçageme where you’ll find quaint restaurants and idyllic cafes, as well as shops and markets.

The home itself is beautifully styled, with charming decor, opulent soft furnishings and unique light fittings that make it feel really special. The grand dining area is ideal for tucking into Piri-Piri chicken altogether, while the reading room is great for cosying up with a good book when you need some rest. Outside, there’s a private outdoor pool where you can take a lovely dip, along with alfresco sitting areas that provide stunning views out over the houses and hills in the distance.

Just 10km from the beautiful town of Sintra, this traditional home makes a great base from which to explore the Portuguese Riviera. It’s also just 1.5km from Praia das Maçãs beach as well as local restaurants and shops. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay, but for relaxing days at home, this villa ticks all the right boxes. The swimming pool can be heated (upon request), there’s a terrace for al fresco dining and the rooms are family-friendly – and with three ground floor bedrooms, this is a lovely option for those with reduced mobility.

Looking at those views, it’s not hard to see why this home is in our collection. Then there’s the swimming pool (heated upon request), terrace and outdoor fire – ideal for sunset drinks and stargazing. From here, you can stroll down to nearby Praia da Aguda beach (just 1km away) and you’ll find restaurants, bars and a supermarket also within easy reach. For explorations further afield, we suggest hiring a car and visiting nearby Sintra (11km away) and Cape Roca. There’s free private parking, and if you’re looking for a little something extra your host can help organise excursions.

With its central location, this home makes a great base from which to explore Sintra. Stepping outside, it’s just a short walk to the majestic sights with easy access to local restaurants, cafes and shops. There’s also a sweet terrace offering great views and while the rooms are basic, we think most of your time will be spent outdoors exploring the region. Guests should also note this apartment is located on the third floor with no lift access.
