With dreamy gardens, colourful interiors and a pretty and peaceful location on Portugal's sunny Algarve, this gorgeous holiday home will be an absolute dream to stay in from start to finish. It's based just a short drive from the beautiful beaches of Albufeira, as well as being within easy reach of some great restaurants and bars.

We fell in love with the outdoor areas the minute we saw them. The hammock makes the perfect place to get stuck into a good book, while the covered dining terrace is wonderful for sunset socialising with cocktails in hand. And that's all without mentioning that amazing outdoor private pool, where you can float on a lilo and top up your tan, or splash about to your heart's content.

Inside, the home is somehow even more striking. Colourful retro interiors give the home a wonderfully charming feel – the dining area looks like something from an Alice in Wonderland book, and is ideal for feasting on Piri-Piri chicken – and the vibrant lounge is fantastic for late-night drinks and party games. There's even a sauna here for when you need ultimate relaxation.

We absolutely love the feel of this house. Combining authentic Portuguese charm with quirky touches such as the mosaic detailing in the living/dining and the carefully curated collection of colourful art, as soon as you enter you get a real sense of the home's unique identity and can tell how much love and care has been put into the finishing and maintaining of it. 

With three twin bedrooms, one double, and two extra sleeping places in the communal areas of the home, we think it would be ideal for extended family groups or a friends' getaway, whilst its prime location close to the restaurants, bars, and cafés of this part of Albufeira – as well as just 500 metres from the nearest sandy beach – make it a great base for a special holiday in the Algarvian sun. 

Start your day with a dip in the inviting turquoise waters of the swimming pool as the scent of the lemon trees warming in the sun begins to hang heavier in the air, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast on one of the numerous terraces. Perhaps you'll go to the beach, or into town to check out the shops and sample some of the fresh seafood delicacies on offer. Or maybe you'll finally make a dent in that book. No matter how your day pans out, come together in the evening by the traditional wood-fired barbecue to enjoy a homecooked feast of delectable local produce picked up from a local supermarket. 

One of our favourites has got to be the flavourful chicken piri-piri from this region. So why not try to replicate those spicy, savoury flavours before grilling it to perfection –yourself? Though you could always just head down towards the strip and get a taste of the real thing if you've hung up your chef's hat for the week...

Tucked away on a quiet street in Albufeira’s historic Old Town, this studio apartment is the perfect base for a couple or solo traveller looking for a convenient location in the Algarve. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and situated only a few minutes walk from dos Pescadores beach, you couldn’t be better positioned if your priority is proximity to the sand. While the apartment is small, it does have a kitchenette and an alfresco dining terrace where you can enjoy home-cooked breakfasts in the sun.

It’s in the resort of Quinta da Balaia in the centre of the Algarve, a twenty-minute walk from beaches including Santa Eulalia and Oura. There’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity, so you’ll be grateful to have such a calm space to return home to. We love the private pool and the alfresco dining setup, which makes spending time together outside a breeze.

Some of the bedrooms are a bit of a squeeze, and the balcony is the only outdoor space, but with Túnel beach just fifty metres away and a great selection of beachfront eateries to enjoy, you’re likely to spend most of your time lapping up the Portuguese sun away from home.

We recommend hiring a car for ease – there's on-site parking available. You're a short walk from plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, making it ideal for those looking to relax at home. There's also a sleek kitchen as well as an outside dining area for group meals. Meanwhile, you'll find a private balcony off the main bedroom for some well-earned downtime.

Wander inside, and the home is light and bright, with comfortable furnishings and rich brown beams stretching overhead. In summer, it provides the perfect respite from the heat of the sun, while in winter, your feet will stay nice and toasty with the welcome underfloor heating.

Our favourite spot has to be the outdoor space. It’s easy to imagine days spent here, enjoying the cool water of your sparkling pool as the sun warms your skin. Perhaps you’d prefer to stretch out on a sun lounger, armed with a cocktail and a good book, as you listen to the delighted chatter of your children playing on the swing nearby. If an afternoon siesta is calling your name, climb onto your hammock for a little doze as the breeze drifts gently by. 

If you can tear yourself away from the relaxing vibe of this home, there’s so much to enjoy in the local area. Head north, and you’ll find the historic town of Silves. If the beach is what you seek, drive south and you can enjoy the white, sandy beaches of Armaçao de Pera. Just the spot to prop up one of the beach bars or enjoy a spot of lunch.

In the quaint village of Amorosa, this home offers an authentic Portuguese experience from the moment you arrive at the front door. 

Showcasing signature Mediterranean style, this luxurious villa is a treasure trove of original features, from antique floor tiles to the signature Calcada paving stones outside. 

There’s plenty of room for the whole family here, thanks to converted barns which house four of the villa’s six bedrooms. The heart of the home, however, has to be the courtyard. Try your hand at cooking some local dishes in the contemporary outdoor kitchen, which boasts a barbecue grill, sink, fridge and dishwasher, plus bar seating perfect for preparing meals together. 

Of course, you’ll want to enjoy your food alfresco - take a seat under the pergola and pour a glass of wine before you dig in to get the full dining experience. After dinner, why not head to the ping pong table or dartboard to round off the night?

Whilst this home has everything you need to relax and unwind the Portuguese way, it’s certainly worth venturing into Faro for the day to wander among the historic sights and landmarks. The outdoor swimming pool awaits when you return - the perfect way to cool off after a day of exploring.
