This charming farmhouse, nestled in the Portuguese countryside, promises a peaceful base for making memories with your loved ones. Beautifully restored, it has just the right mix of old and new – retaining its character, but with all the modern conveniences you’d want in a home-away-from-home. Wander inside, and the home is light and bright, with comfortable furnishings and rich brown beams stretching overhead. In summer, it provides the perfect respite from the heat of the sun, while in winter, your feet will stay nice and toasty with the welcome underfloor heating.

Our favourite spot has to be the outdoor space. It’s easy to imagine days spent here, enjoying the cool water of your sparkling pool as the sun warms your skin. Perhaps you’d prefer to stretch out on a sun lounger, armed with a cocktail and a good book, as you listen to the delighted chatter of your children playing on the swing nearby. If an afternoon siesta is calling your name, climb onto your hammock for a little doze as the breeze drifts gently by. 

If you can tear yourself away from the relaxing vibe of this home, there’s so much to enjoy in the local area. Head north, and you’ll find the historic town of Silves. Whether you're inside taking advantage of the fully-equipped kitchen to cook up some frango da guia, or you're spending time outside catching rays by the pool or enjoying the bubbles of the large Jacuzzi tub, there's sure to be something everyone can sink their teeth into at this home. The large windows throughout ensure that the sunlight can reach you during the day, so you don't even have to get out of bed to appreciate it. We fell in love with the outdoor areas the minute we saw them. The hammock makes the perfect place to get stuck into a good book, while the covered dining terrace is wonderful for sunset socialising with cocktails in hand. And that's all without mentioning that amazing outdoor private pool, where you can float on a lilo and top up your tan, or splash about to your heart's content.

Inside, the home is somehow even more striking. Colourful retro interiors give the home a wonderfully charming feel – the dining area looks like something from an Alice in Wonderland book, and is ideal for feasting on Piri-Piri chicken – and the vibrant lounge is fantastic for late-night drinks and party games. There's even a sauna here for when you need ultimate relaxation.

With its zesty lemon exterior this townhouse overlooks your private swimming pool, lined with luxurious sun loungers and a sweet spot, just tucked away towards the end of the terrace, for an evening firing up the barbecue with friends. Inside is just as magical. The open-plan space provides for a sociable setting. Put your feet up on the chaise sofa while your loved ones grab a bottle of wine and you have the best of both worlds – comfort and great company. The glass panel floating staircase is one of many modern features that we love about this home, adding to the openness and light, bright atmosphere.

If you don’t fancy rustling up a breakfast spread, you’re within walking distance of many stores and restaurants. We absolutely love the feel of this house. Combining authentic Portuguese charm with quirky touches such as the mosaic detailing in the living/dining and the carefully curated collection of colourful art, as soon as you enter you get a real sense of the home's unique identity and can tell how much love and care has been put into the finishing and maintaining of it. 

With three twin bedrooms, one double, and two extra sleeping places in the communal areas of the home, we think it would be ideal for extended family groups or a friends' getaway, whilst its prime location close to the restaurants, bars, and cafés of this part of Albufeira – as well as just 500 metres from the nearest sandy beach – make it a great base for a special holiday in the Algarvian sun. 

Start your day with a dip in the inviting turquoise waters of the swimming pool as the scent of the lemon trees warming in the sun begins to hang heavier in the air, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast on one of the numerous terraces. Perhaps you'll go to the beach, or into town to check out the shops and sample some of the fresh seafood delicacies on offer. Or maybe you'll finally make a dent in that book. No matter how your day pans out, come together in the evening by the traditional wood-fired barbecue to enjoy a homecooked feast of delectable local produce picked up from a local supermarket. 

One of our favourites has got to be the flavourful chicken piri-piri from this region. So why not try to replicate those spicy, savoury flavours before grilling it to perfection –yourself? Though you could always just head down towards the strip and get a taste of the real thing if you've hung up your chef's hat for the week...

Some of the bedrooms are a bit of a squeeze, and the balcony is the only outdoor space, but with Túnel beach just fifty metres away and a great selection of beachfront eateries to enjoy, you’re likely to spend most of your time lapping up the Portuguese sun away from home.

This wonderful villa is on the cliffs above Praia d’Oura, and boasts spectacular sea views. You can even walk straight from the garden to the beach via a steep set of stairs – save some energy for the return climb though. The villa sits amid stunning gardens that make for a relaxing backdrop. We love the private pool, the courtyard, and the day beds that face the sea – where better to doze in the sunshine? You’ll be just a short walk to Santa Eulalia, with all of its bars and restaurants. What more could you ask for?

This villa is a great choice for families or groups of friends seeking a private garden and pool while being located near the beach. From here, the sandy shores of Praia Mónica Isabel are 2km away. We recommend hiring a car for ease – there's on-site parking available. You're a short walk from plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, making it ideal for those looking to relax at home. There's also a sleek kitchen as well as an outside dining area for group meals. Meanwhile, you'll find a private balcony off the main bedroom for some well-earned downtime. 

Sun-Scented Eyes

Located in a quiet neighbourhood of Albufeira, within walking distance of restaurants and a short drive from Praia dos Alemães, this villa is ideally positioned for a family or group of friends. It was the outside space of this home that caught our eye, particularly the private swimming pool and dining area, complete with bar area for stirring up cocktails. Inside, while the place could do with a refresh (as some areas are a little dated), you have everything you need for a fuss-free stay.

Well-geared to an easy getaway, there's an inviting shared swimming pool to while away the afternoons. After privacy and seclusion? This home might not be the place for you. However, the private balcony is a nice touch for evening drinks once the daytime bustle from the shared grounds peters out.

The interior here might be simple in style – think pristine, white walls and minimal accents – but its thoughtful design means you’ll have plenty of room for eating, drinking, and being merry with your fellow guests. Come together at the kitchen table for a Portuguese-inspired family meal or unwind in the air-conditioned living room with a drink or two before setting off for a day of sunbathing at Praia do Lourenço, a rocky beach just 1 km away.
