Alternatively, simply unwind next to the private pool or admire the enchanting garden views from the veranda of the main house and the cottage.

This place is ideal for a large group of friends or family – there’s a charming separate cottage with a twin bedroom and kitchenette too, which provides a perfect space for those in search of a tad more privacy. If you love traditional interiors, then you’re in luck – from the grandfather clock in the dining room to the farmhouse-style kitchen and antique beds, this home is full of old-world character.

Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. The country’s only national park, the mountainous nature reserve of Peneda Geres National Park, is just a forty-minute drive away and offers prehistoric remains and walking trails, as well as golden eagles, deer and wolves – oh my.

These two stone farmhouses provide a rural haven in the heart of the Minho hills. The home is set on a 210-acre wine estate – you'll have nothing to disturb you here but the odd worker roaming the fields and vineyards. Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away.

There’s no price for guessing what the city of Porto is famous for. However, you may be surprised to find that this fortified wine begins its life far from the city, in the vineyards found upstream and on either side of the river Douro, and it’s here where you’ll find this eye-catching villa. Overlooking the slopes of Portugal’s wine region, this home boasts panoramic views that are almost impossible to tear your eyes away from. At sunset, make a beeline for the infinity pool that stretches out across the width of the house. There’s a second heated swimming pool to the side, best reached through the open-plan living and dining room. Take a dip beneath a starlit sky or sunbathe during the day. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and windows can be found from the kitchen to the three bedrooms, effortlessly bridging the indoors and outside. The best views can be found from the balcony on the first floor. Since this area has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status, you’ll find that there’s plenty of exploring and hiking to do. But there’s also fun to be had at home on a rainy afternoon – challenge the group to a championship of billiards and table football and may the best team win.

We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. From its sunny yellow facade complete with quaint panelled windows and traditional terracotta roof tiles to its elegant interior that retains many of its original, rustic features – not to mention the beautiful modern step-down swimming pool – we think it offers something truly unique and special for your holiday in this often-overlooked part of Portugal.

The indoor spaces of this home feel impressive and grand, and yet manage to exude a kind of homely warmth that's welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms, in particular, are a favourite of ours. Awake as the gentle morning light begins to seep in through those large French windows with stained glass detailing and feel immediately enveloped in the majesty of these rooms, as the high ceilings and gorgeous furnishings create a sense of luxury. Coffee out on the terrace anyone? 

The living and dining rooms, too, have an undeniable opulence, giving off an irresistible old-world glamour. Make the most of the sense of occassion by coming together for a special meal, or simply enjoying one another's company in the effortless serenity of these spaces.

When you do fancy getting out of the villa, then you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do in the local area. Explore the local town of Esposende where you will find fantastic fish restaurants serving up the freshest seafood. Or, make the short 30-minute drive to the historic city of Oporto – the centre of which is classified as a World Heritage Site. The sand beaches of this part of the Portuguese coastline are under four kilometres away too, so grab the suncream and a beach towel and get out there for a day of sun, sea, and unbridled relaxation (as well as some high-octane watersports if you like). In the mood for more activity? Then there is both golf and horse riding on offer in the local area.

It sits just above the sands of Playa Silgar – and trust us, when we say you'll spend every minute soaking up the scenery, we mean it. This magical home in a stunning rural location has to be seen to be believed. Nestled in the Minho region of northern Portugal, it's around an hour from Porto, with the city of Braga just 10 miles away, but all you'll see here are green hills in every direction. 

Set on a hillside, your home has incredible gardens that go up and up, at one point disappearing into woodland. With a number of lawns and terraces, as well as a beautiful private pool and terrace, you won't be short of outside space – or somewhere for some quiet reading away from the group.

Inside, this traditional home has bags of character, with exposed stone walls, an eclectic mix of statement furniture and plenty of colourful wall art. A cosy living room features a log burner for the cooler months and there's a practical kitchen with all the mod-cons. And here you can choose to eat at the antique dining table indoors or out on the beautiful covered terrace. Meanwhile, a surprisingly contemporary staircase leads up to a galleried landing and there's a surprise in store up here – a pretty balcony with incredible views.

This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

Days begin with pasteis de nata on the terrace – the hosts drop off fresh baked goods for breakfast every morning – followed by lazy hours by the pool with a book in hand. If you can prise yourself away from your lounger, the surrounding area is fine hiking territory. 

Sunsets here are show-stoppers, so make sure you’re back in time for a cold glass on the terrace as the sky turns every shade of orange and red. Round off with a night-time dip in the pool under a sky full of stars to make the most of every minute in this Portuguese oasis.

Days can be spent hiking and cycling across this beautiful countryside – the village of Mesao Frio is just a short drive away, while the beautiful city of Porto is less than an hour away.
