We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. It’s the ideal position to explore the city on foot, with the ancient azulejo-tiled churches and baroque towers punctuating orange-roofed buildings. On your doorstep, you’ve got family-run restaurants, charming coffee shops and bakeries serving oven-fresh custard tarts. Plus, the famous wine warehouses that line the Douro at Ribeira are just a short stroll away.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Throwing these open, you can listen to the chatter from the street waking up in the morning while dozing in the comfy bed before settling in at plush velvet chairs for a classic breakfast of custard tarts and coffee.

If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Whilst the apartment is housed in a building dating from the 18th century, it’s been completely renovated inside. One thing to note, though, at full capacity, two people will be on a sofa bed in the living space. Situated in one of Porto’s picturesque districts, Ribeira – this apartment boasts an enviable location too. You’ll find a maze of cobbled medieval alleys, cosy bars, and eateries serving traditional cuisine. Attractions nearby include the iconic D. Luís Bridge and the beautiful Bolsa Palace.

The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.

Your host can even organise food tours on request, showing you the very best of the city's gastronomic scene. This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. The windows’ second benefit is the sheer amount of light the living space gets, bathing the tasteful furniture in the warm sun. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.

Between two beautiful parks – Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim das Virtudes – and set in a pretty period building, this studio home is quite the little charmer. With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.

Located in Vila Nova de Gaia – just a fifteen-minute walk from Porto’s centre – this compact apartment offers a cosy getaway with rooftop views from its private balcony. Despite being laid over two floors, there’s not a tonne of space here. But a sofa bed in the living area offers flexible sleeping arrangements and the upstairs bedroom provides access to the outdoor area. While you’ll find a public car park nearby, we recommend exploring Porto on foot or by public transport instead, with the nearby Luís I Bridge leading to bustling Cais da Ribeira and beyond.

A stay in this modern villa combines rural relaxation and keeping active all at once. Those that like to stick to a fitness schedule (or those that just want to splash about) can make use of the private indoor swimming pool, lined with loungers. There’s a saltwater sauna for afters, or perhaps you just want to head up to the terrace for a sundowner. On the same site, you’ll find a state-of-the-art gym, football field and tennis court too. There’s an element of fun to this home as well, with a children’s play park in the grounds and a full-size snooker table in one of the lounges.

That’s right, “one of” the lounges. There are three to choose from inside – the grand, chandeliered main lounge set around a fireplace, a snug with an upright piano for a sing-along, and the laid-back games room with its own bar. Bedrooms are spacious and retain an air of class with dark wood headboards. Our favourite has to be the wood-clad bedroom with trinkets and curios scattered across built-in shelves.

In terms of location, you’re in the rural area just outside Porto, yet just a fifteen-minute drive to the restaurants, historic sights and buzzing nightlife of the city centre. If you fancy a day at the beach, Arcozelo is just a ten-minute drive away.

This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

The building is over 100 years old – it certainly doesn't lack charm. We adore the hand-painted blue tiles on the exterior, while inside, neoclassical windows flood the living space with sunlight and quaint Juliet balconies offer views towards the centre. It's not the largest pad and the kitchen is pretty compact, but with a desk for remote working and two cosy bedrooms, we think it'll do nicely for a Porto getaway.

And, on sunny mornings, you'll love sipping your morning coffee outside on the balcony as you plan your itinerary for the day to come. 

Wander down to the riverside and admire the bridges the city is famous for, or take a boat trip for a new perspective on the city. A ten-minute walk will bring you into the old town, where you can enjoy a tasting in one of the port bars. This studio is perfect for a leisure or business trip to wonderful Porto. Recently renovated, the historical character has been maintained whilst providing 21st-century comforts. In the past, the building was a traditional pharmacy, so the pharmacy's name on the façade has been retained – we love the attention to detail here. The highlight of this home, though, for us, is the beautifully tiled terrace – enjoy a glass of wine here on warm days.

Through patio doors, you'll find the living space with its mellow-hued exposed stone walls and the comfy bedroom beyond the handy storage wall.

Located on the south side of the historic centre of Porto, in Vila Nova de Gaia, there are plenty of attractions to explore, such as the Cais de Gaia, the pedestrian promenade on the Douro River. Or have a tour of the Port Wine Cellars, two minutes on foot, while the iconic D. Luís I Bridge is a five-minute walk. You'll also have restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, and the local tourist office within two minutes' walking distance of this apartment.
