Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Built in the 1940s, the space was thoughtfully designed by the host, who works as a professional designer herself. With earthy hues that reflect the natural locale, stylish details and quality materials found in every corner – this place feels like walking into a warm hug. 

Outside, you'll find a beautiful unfenced garden area that extends into the surrounding forest. Gather around the fire pit for cosy evenings spent stargazing or roasting s'mores before having a dip in the jacuzzi hot tub amidst nature's fresh air. 

Discover the wine, food and nature that the Leelanau Peninsula is known for – from local cheese shops, wineries, and produce to dreamy beaches, hikes, and golf; it's an idyllic region to visit – with most of its attractions reachable in less than twenty minutes driving distance. Best of all – you'll be just a ten-minute drive from the sandy shores of Good Harbour Beach, which offers simply stunning scenery, particularly at sunset.

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

In the centre of downtown Paso Robles, this stylish apartment puts you close to shops, restaurants and, of course, wine tasting rooms. The hills around Paso are filled with California’s best wineries where Zinfandel and Petit Sirah grapes grow plump on the vine. Indulge in a warming Pinot Noir in the living room, where faux fur cushions invite you to cosy up on the mid-century-style sofa. The sleek, black kitchen has everything you need, including plenty of room for a few bottles of Chardonnay in the big American-style fridge. If you want to switch it up a bit the cute bar trolley is set with everything needed to mix up a few Martinis and when sleep beckons, the huge king-size bed in the master bedroom awaits.

Just outside of the village of Calistoga in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you'll encounter this rustic yet refined retreat surrounded by acres of verdant vineyards and lush gardens. With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. In addition to the usual high-end outdoor amenities, you'll also find professional-standard courts for sand volleyball, bocce ball and tennis. We sense a bit of friendly competition. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

Walking into this townhouse, you might completely forget that you’re in Dallas because of how convincingly Parisian the space is. Professionally designed, you’ll find Monet and Picasso coffee table books that add even more character to the already charming home. Clean, crisp lines and a neutral colour palette make it feel roomy and bright, but without compromising on comfort. Sit in the light of the framed window as you enjoy a morning coffee from the cosy chair, or move into the lounge where you can draw your knees up to read the climax of your murder mystery book. 

Find the record player in the striking, moody bedroom and spin a vinyl to fill the home with music as you cook in the compact kitchen. Enjoy meals together at the chic dining table or head out to eat at one of the nearby restaurants. 

With coffee shops a quick stroll away, you might want to treat yourself, but there’s something special about sitting down at the little bistro table in the garden and having a Nespresso coffee there.
