Clued-up New Yorkers have slowly been turning their attention away from the Hamptons to this corner of countryside in Litchfield County. One step into this home, and we can see why they're making the swap. Set on six acres, this spot is a polished slice of serenity. Antiques from Europe fill the clapboard building, with Oushak carpets set on white oak floors. Gather the group for dinner under the chandeliers or curl up by the exposed brick fireplace come nightfall. The house has also been fully renovated. You'll find us in the sauna and steam shower, or making use of the studio with some yoga. Come summer, it's out to the decking for iced lemonade or soaks in the hot tub. When it’s time for something more serious, use the 16-foot quartz desk overlooking the garden. Your reward? Drinks at the wet bar.

The galleried landing has a desk in case you need to keep one eye on work while you're away, and the huge deck has a gas barbecue for those long lazy lunches outdoors. While its statement design pieces add interest, it's a homely place too, with a bedroom set up for children, logs provided for the fire, and plenty of books to pick through on the shelves. Just minutes from a choice of state parks, forests, orchards, and wineries, your days will be filled with outdoor adventures – and all just an easy drive from the city.

Surrounded by nature, this East Vail home is the perfect spot to get your fill of fresh air. Newly renovated, it neatly mixes mountain lodge chic with contemporary comfort and, to top it all off, boasts picture-perfect views of the mountains. The main living area offers maximum socialising space with its open-plan layout, and you can relax by the fire after a day on the slopes or gather round the dining table for a hearty meal post hiking. With  mountain views from every room, it almost seems like you're being spoilt with a patio too – the perfect place for morning coffee while planning your day's adventures. Get up close and personal with your natural surroundings by heading off on one of the bike and hiking trails, and walk down to Gore Creek, famous for its excellent fishing. With the free Vail Shuttle just moments away, you can easily reach its ski lifts, offering plenty of activities no matter what time of year.

Damn Fine Coffee

With its three-sided fireplace, controllable underfloor heating, and deep bath in the master suite, this home is a cosy place to be after a day exploring the Colorado mountains. Come winter, it's all about skiing or snowboarding, with access to the slopes just steps from the apartment. Thanks to French doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, you can check out conditions before shredding fresh powder – if you're not in the mood, we love curling up with a good book on the grey sofas, underneath the geometric antler art. On warmer days, there's a gas grill on the balcony for cooking something delicious, with the long dining room table right behind you to serve up quickly.

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

Nestled in the Rockies is this Colorado mansion set on 35 acres of grasslands. This warm wooden haven is a true mountain retreat adequate to host the extended family or a large group of friends. With plenty of indoor-outdoor living space, everyone will feel recharged before and after days spent reclining on chaise loungers or in the pool set into the home’s courtyard. When there is snow, you can cross-country ski off your own back-door and into the yard. The location is quite rural which means ultimate seclusion, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hit the slopes of Aspen for the day. We love that the home was built for a sustainable future, with geothermal heating throughout. Wish days away with a BBQ or roast s'mores on the fire. Not to mention the accompanying views of the sunset over the Elk Mountain range.

The changing seasons allow for a variety of adventures, in the winter months guests have access to snowboarding and ski trails and in the summer months, you can go fishing in the reservoir or even paddleboarding. The home sits on the edge of the little town of Frisco, which has excellent shops, restaurants and cafes. After adventures in the Rockies, you can unwind in the clubhouse pool, or let your muscles relax in the hot tub. Come home to a movie in the snug or enjoy a home-cooked meal around the beautiful wooden dining table.

Luckily, the home’s bright, colourful design lives up to its surroundings, with patterned throws and bedspreads, quirky artwork and unique furniture. There are 1.5 acres of land to explore, with plenty of options for dining outside, whether you choose to relax with a barbecue under the wisteria or socialise on the patio. There’s also a separate barn in the garden, which can hold a further three people. On hot summer days, go for a swim in the pool, or lie back with a book on a sun lounger nearby. As if this weren’t enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. On Saturdays, amble over to the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh produce to whip up a feast.

Inside, the living space boasts a sofa bed for two guests, a pool table, and a cosy atmosphere. Having only two bathrooms isn't ideal, but that aside, this is a comfortable option for fun in the Fort Lauderdale sun.

The land on which this Plano home sits used to be a set of natural springs, but they have since been dredged and turned into small lakes with habitats for ducks and turtles. What this means for guests coming to stay at the address is that there's a lovely view of peaceful waters to be enjoyed while seated on the covered terrace.

This isn't the only standout outdoor space at the property. Wander to the other side and you'll find an invitingly blue swimming pool and spa surrounded by loungers and a fire pit. Add to that a children's play area, and it's easy to imagine spending most of your time outside here.

This is slightly a shame given how impressive the interior is — the stark white walls, wooden floors and sleek surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom combine together for an atmosphere that's modern but not completely devoid of personality.

In local Plano, both the Heritage Farmstead Museum and the Interurban Railway Museum take around ten minutes to reach in the car. The very centre of Dallas can be reached in just over forty minutes' drive, too.

Pinewood flooring, original windows and the stone fireplace are accompanied by industrial-inspired lighting, furnishings in an angelic shade of white and pops of colour from prints hanging on the wall. At the back of the house, there's a covered porch and a terrace complete with alfresco seating and a barbecue — that's summer afternoons sorted, then. When the sun does makes an appearance — which isn't unheard of in these parts — a ten-minute walk down Ocean Avenue will get you to Carmel Beach, while there are a host of art galleries and restaurants that surround the home.
