The Circle Of Light

Overlooking beautiful Donner Lake, which sits on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, guests will find a home that will perfectly suit a small family.  The first bedroom has a king-size bed, while bedroom two is made up of a queen-size bunk bed. More importantly, guests have easy access to the lake so make sure to pack your swimsuits and any floating devices. Wander around the edge of the lake and you'll come across charming cafes, restaurants and shops. We would, however, still recommend having a car in order to explore all this area has to offer.

If you’re not hitting the building’s private gym, perhaps take a jog through Bedwell Bayfront Park, a five-minute walk away. For a day out in the city, San Francisco is just a half-hour drive away (or fifty minutes on the train from Redwood). 

Apart from a private gym, the building is also home to a huge outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by outdoor lounges with fire pits for cool evenings. There are myriad cafés and lounges inside, and a plush barbecue area outside on the deck too. The apartment itself is big and bright, with modern artworks popping against gallery-white walls. Welcoming up to twelve guests, Colours of the Lake is the perfect home for a large family gathering just outside of Donner Lake. Whether you decide to visit in the summer or the winter, this area has plenty to offer to make it magical all year long. The open-plan living area is the home’s main social hub, perfect for chit-chatting while someone prepares dinner, heated debates around the large dining table, or family games in front of the roaring fire. Then step outside and admire the wonderful views from the back deck. From here, you can also spot the sixteenth-hole of the Tahoe Donner Golf Course, which is surely worth a visit if you enjoy the game of golf. Spend your days swimming in any of the area’s magical lakes, enjoy exclusive skiing in colder months or just hang back at the home and relax with a great book and even better company. However you choose to spend your time here, you’ll be glad to soak your tired muscles in the outdoor hot tub at the end of a long day.

There’s plenty within the building to fill your downtime. Swim laps in the huge outdoor swimming pool, or laze on a lounger in the sun. There’s a barbecue area dappled with stringed lights and fire pits in the outdoor lounges if you’re feeling social. Inside the apartment block, you’ve got a full gym with its own yoga studio, cafés and myriad plush lounges. Should you crave some privacy, the apartment is kitted out for relaxation in the open-plan living area, and convenient for working remotely with a laptop-friendly desk. The kitchen is particularly spacious and well-equipped with a big breakfast bar for busy mornings.

Located in the town of Kensington amid the Berkeley Hills, this home provides a great base for a family looking to explore California’s coast. It’s a lived-in family home and some of the rooms may appear a little messy, but it has plenty to keep you entertained. There are lots of books and games here for the kids and when it’s the right season, you can pick fruit and vegetables in the front garden. Kensington’s small centre has a few shops and café, but if you’re looking for more hustle and bustle you can catch the commuter bus to vibrant San Francisco.

This home might be close to Stanford University, but it's a million miles away from your average student house. In fact, parts of it feel more like a learned professor's seminar room, from the shelves packed full of books and the grand piano, to the historic paintings hanging on the walls. There are a couple of desks if you need to study, as well as a few nooks nestled below the window or a roaring fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs for any late-night philosophical conversations. When you fancy a day out, there are distractions in every direction — San Francisco is forty-five minutes' drive to the north, the trails of Pearson-Arastradero Preserve is seven minutes due west and to the south, San Jose can be reached in under half an hour.

Surrounded by cypress trees in Mountain View, California, this ecological home is a true architectural wonder. Expertly designed by renowned studio Atelier Hsu, its open, industrial-style featuring exposed steel beams and reclaimed redwood furniture instantly reflects its Silicon Valley surroundings. It doesn’t take a genius though to see this home is pretty special. The living room’s huge glass doors give way to a sun-soaked patio while just inside, a large dining table is perfectly positioned for semi-al fresco dining. An eye-catching iron staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms, both boasting their own freestanding bathtubs in their respectively luxurious bathrooms. Wander down to the large, white kitchen to cook up a Cali-fresh meal, or head out to explore Mountain View’s downtown bars and restaurants just under a mile away. While the area is known for its many cycling and walking paths, you can also easily explore further afield. San Francisco is just a forty-minute drive away or a short train ride from Mountain View station, just ten minutes down the road.
