Built in 1800, Hitchbrook is a quintessential New England home. Surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, this home is a private getaway for those looking for a pastoral retreat. Think rustic but sophisticated; evenings in front of fireplace or relaxing in the den playing games and singing-along to the piano. There are some great hikes nearby – the hills of Hitchcock Corners and across from Mill Brook are wonderful for walking. For the cyclists, there are plenty of bike trails to get stuck into. We’d recommend picking up some supplies from the neighbouring villages of Millbrook and Lakeville, and crossing the border into upstate New York for a picnic.

We consider this stunning estate a true gem and a rare find – resting on the banks of Potomac River, within a tranquil, private community, it is a whole, glorious world to itself. Just the first glimpse of the outside of this imposing house offers a promise of a restful stay – an impression which is only reinforced by all the green space surrounding it.

The bright and spacious interior offers more than a touch of luxury, and we cannot get enough of the breathtaking views of the river, courtesy of the grand windows, which flood the large living area with plenty of natural light. This is a perfect place to relax, with huge, comfortable sofas, and a fireplace for cosy evening snuggles. All the bedrooms offer unique, stylish designs and plush beds, guaranteeing a great night’s rest. 
Factor in all the added luxuries, including our favourite – the private movie theatre – and we think that this is a hard one to beat. 

The close proximity of both Downtown DC, which is a fifteen-minute drive away, and all the surrounding areas, means that you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this property’s surroundings, while at the same time feel perfectly connected to big city life.

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.

This Woodstock residence is one for the design-savvy folk. Once a studio belonging to acclaimed realist painter Reginald Marsh, the space has been transformed into a stunning family home. It was proudly featured in Italy's Icon Design Magazine for its attention to detail and considered use of elegant and characterful materials. 

We loved the living space, particularly the expansive ceilings, enormous windows and integration of concrete and wood. Rise and shine to picturesque views of the beautiful garden. Relax on the outdoor day bed, which looks out over the legendary Indian Head mountain ridge, have a picnic by the swimming pond, surrounded by juniper trees and century-old cedars, or follow the burbling stream into the woods. Then later, gather around the fire pit. Whatever you decide to do, this home invites you to slow down the pace in style.

If you'd like to explore further afield, lace-up your boots and take a drive out to a hiking trail  –  the Indian Head Wilderness and the Bluestone Wild Forest are no more than fifteen minutes away.

Just a two-hour drive from New York City, this home in the Poconos is more like a private resort, with an impressive list of amenities and all kinds of entertainment options for a large group. We love the array of activities the spot has on offer, with a barbecue, fire pit, ping pong and foosball tables, kayaks, and a deck to jump straight into the freshwater lake. When you're not exploring the surrounding state parks, the home is full of nooks and crannies to explore. Lounge in the Japanese soaking tub, lie back in an indoor hammock, or watch the sunset from the deck before planning another day of action at this peaceful hideaway.

Escape to the Western Catskills for a break surrounded by the rustling of leaves and the calls of birds. This architecturally significant A-frame cabin sits on a secluded plot among the tall trees – a clearing just for you. With nothing to distract you, here you'll be free to hike, spot wildlife, spend time together as a family or even write the novel you've been planning for years.

Inside, a towering vaulted ceiling and huge windows make this place feel bright and breezy whatever the time of year. All-white walls and Scandinavian styling are anything but rustic and the comfy modular sofa is the perfect place to snuggle in front of the pellet-burning stove on chilly evenings. One bedroom on the ground floor and another loft room make it suitable for a family or a couple of friends, and the pretty kitchen is surprisingly well equipped for cooking at home.

In the mornings, take your coffee out onto the deck and bask in the views and by night light the fire pit down in the garden for drinks under the stars. Just a ten-minute drive from Livingstone Manor, famous for its trendy breweries and excellent restaurants, you're in the heart of this bohemian area's foodie scene, with fly-fishing, hiking trails and more on your doorstep.

This home's architecture, interiors and colourful prints all share a mid-century modern style, but its woodland surroundings are more Hansel and Gretel than Gilbert and George. In a tiny hamlet in upstate New York, it’s surrounded by mountains, lakes and forest – great for skiers, hikers and wild swimmers alike. The home has several standout features but we love the double-height living area, with its huge windows and cosy fireplace. The galleried landing has a desk in case you need to keep one eye on work while you're away, and the huge deck has a gas barbecue for those long lazy lunches outdoors. While its statement design pieces add interest, it's a homely place too, with a bedroom set up for children, logs provided for the fire, and plenty of books to pick through on the shelves. Just minutes from a choice of state parks, forests, orchards, and wineries, your days will be filled with outdoor adventures – and all just an easy drive from the city.

Tucked away near Tobyhanna State Park and with valleys, mountains and forests all a short drive away, this home is perfectly situated for the adventurous. While it has a rather basic interior, we think with a full roster of guests, you may not notice. Some of the bedrooms are also quite bare, but as a place to lay your head in between excursions around the state of Pennsylvania, they serve their purpose. There's also plenty here to keep kids entertained, with air hockey, table football, pool, table tennis and the projector all vying for their attention. 

The Great Harvest

The Ashokan is an exquisite barn-styled house nestled within rich woodland landscape. The quaint exterior shelters an incredibly contemporary and stylish interior. From the patterned floors and wonderful impressionist paintings, to the rustic oak furnishings and floorboards, this house seamlessly blends homeliness with elegance. The large bedrooms have plush deluxe beds (although the mezzanine bedroom offers very little privacy and has no curtains), as well as plentiful dressing space and luxurious bathrooms. The estate is located moments away from the beautiful Ashokan reservoir. Spend your days taking in the breathtaking landscape while hiking the trails, or perhaps head into the nearby Woodstock to wander around the legendary town.

An understated colonial-style home is the perfect setting for a Northeastern getaway. It's reminiscent of a family heirloom, with history seeping through the walls. Situated on a bluff with views of the Connecticut shoreline, the home sits atop sprawling private acres dotted with centuries-old trees. This home sits pretty as an English manor in the countryside of upstate New York, a ten-minute drive from the picturesque town of Pawling. Grecian-style columns greet you on arrival and the striking white facade glows against the verdant green gardens – it sits on 18 acres of land. The gardens are studded with ancient oak trees between perfectly manicured lawns and those that enjoy their privacy can opt to stay in the separate cottage in the grounds.

Dating back to 1840, the interior is an homage to elegance and eloquence. The main lounge, with its big Georgian windows and grand piano, looks out over the gardens. Then there are two further living areas – the garden room with a traditional old fireplace and a library lined with towering bookcases. The kitchen looks as though scullery maids still bustle through, with its hanging pots and farmhouse charm. Though all the appliances are state-of-the-art modern. The huge dining room features a bay window overlooking the gardens and a brick fireplace for chilly evenings.

This grand, old home in the Hudson Valley feels like a mix between a beautiful Midwest farmhouse and an English manor. A blue clapboard facade and white bannisters suggest country-chic while the pristine white columns at the entrance add the grandeur. It’s set on 1.6 acres of land where you’ll find a resort-style swimming pool and integrated Jacuzzi to rival Palm Springs and terraces shaded by trees for wining and dining outdoors. Inside, we can see why this place has featured in the Wallstreet Journal and Hudson Valley Magazine – the main living room is a vision of class, set around an ornate fireplace and the original tiger oak panelling remains in the entrance hall. The solarium offers a sunny spot to read a book, and the breakfasting room is currently set up as a home office should you need to get some work done. Chefs will be delighted with the beautiful kitchen with its own butler’s pantry and the hand-painted wallpaper in the dining room adds a sense of occasion to any evening meal. Going down a level, the basement is a (man)cave of wonders with a wine cellar and wet bar. Location-wise, you’ve got the best of town and country here with walks in the Catskills a short drive away and the charming town of Cornwall on your doorstep.
