Built in 1800, Hitchbrook is a quintessential New England home. Surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, this home is a private getaway for those looking for a pastoral retreat. Think rustic but sophisticated; evenings in front of fireplace or relaxing in the den playing games and singing-along to the piano. There are some great hikes nearby – the hills of Hitchcock Corners and across from Mill Brook are wonderful for walking. For the cyclists, there are plenty of bike trails to get stuck into. We’d recommend picking up some supplies from the neighbouring villages of Millbrook and Lakeville, and crossing the border into upstate New York for a picnic.

Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

Just a ten-minute drive from Livingstone Manor, famous for its trendy breweries and excellent restaurants, you're in the heart of this bohemian area's foodie scene, with fly-fishing, hiking trails and more on your doorstep.

It’s the end of the line. Beyond this chalet, there’s nothing but Minnewaska’s protected preserveland. Spend days in New York’s prime rock-climbing location, exploring the drops and cliffs of the Shawangunk Ridge, or hitting Hudson Valley’s scenic hiking trails. 

Settle back at the peaceful chalet, hidden in the trees. Perhaps light the fire pit and chill out under the maples. Inside, it’s Scandi-chic and minimalist, with a rustic stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove softening the living room. Polished wood floors and timber ceilings give it that chalet feel, and furry rugs add a touch of hygge comfort. 

You’re very much out in the forest here, so woodland critters might make an appearance at the big windows, and there’s peace and quiet all around. But should you need a little more action, it’s just a ten-minute drive to the buzzing town of New Paltz, home to farm-to-table restaurants, indie boutiques and a thriving music scene.

We consider this stunning estate a true gem and a rare find – resting on the banks of Potomac River, within a tranquil, private community, it is a whole, glorious world to itself. Just the first glimpse of the outside of this imposing house offers a promise of a restful stay – an impression which is only reinforced by all the green space surrounding it.

The bright and spacious interior offers more than a touch of luxury, and we cannot get enough of the breathtaking views of the river, courtesy of the grand windows, which flood the large living area with plenty of natural light. This is a perfect place to relax, with huge, comfortable sofas, and a fireplace for cosy evening snuggles. All the bedrooms offer unique, stylish designs and plush beds, guaranteeing a great night’s rest. 
Factor in all the added luxuries, including our favourite – the private movie theatre – and we think that this is a hard one to beat. 

The close proximity of both Downtown DC, which is a fifteen-minute drive away, and all the surrounding areas, means that you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this property’s surroundings, while at the same time feel perfectly connected to big city life. 


River in the Sky

In the town of Ossining on the banks of the Hudson River, this home is reminiscent of an English Tudor mansion on the outside. Inside, there’s plenty of social space for the group to spread out – playing a game of pool in the main living room, settling in to watch Netflix by the fire, in the dedicated media room upstairs or perhaps sipping an old fashioned at the wet bar in the “sky lounge” at the top of the house. Those that need to work remotely can take advantage of the lightning-fast Wifi and two dedicated offices for private calls. While the chef of the group will love the custom, gourmet kitchen in shining marble and granite. Outside, there’s even more space to enjoy with a crystal-clear swimming pool (with a basketball hoop) at the centre of the backyard and numerous seating areas scattered around the terrace. Mountain views from the top floor are a reminder that the hiking trails of Hook Mountain and Rockefeller State Park are both a short drive away. You’re also close to Ossining station, where you can take the Hudson line and be in the centre of NYC in an hour.

Just a two-hour drive from New York City, this home in the Poconos is more like a private resort, with an impressive list of amenities and all kinds of entertainment options for a large group. Set less than ten minutes away from scenic Lake Harmony by car, and close to various ski resorts like Jack Frost and Big Boulder Mountain, there are shops and restaurants within a few minutes drive, along with nearby golf courses and a water park.

This Woodstock residence is one for the design-savvy folk. Once a studio belonging to acclaimed realist painter Reginald Marsh, the space has been transformed into a stunning family home. It was proudly featured in Italy's Icon Design Magazine for its attention to detail and considered use of elegant and characterful materials. 

We loved the living space, particularly the expansive ceilings, enormous windows and integration of concrete and wood. Rise and shine to picturesque views of the beautiful garden. Relax on the outdoor day bed, which looks out over the legendary Indian Head mountain ridge, have a picnic by the swimming pond, surrounded by juniper trees and century-old cedars, or follow the burbling stream into the woods. Then later, gather around the fire pit. Whatever you decide to do, this home invites you to slow down the pace in style.

If you'd like to explore further afield, lace-up your boots and take a drive out to a hiking trail  –  the Indian Head Wilderness and the Bluestone Wild Forest are no more than fifteen minutes away.

Nestled in 35 acres of secluded woodland, the house is a breath of fresh air less than two hours’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Step inside and you will instantly notice the owners’ keen aesthetic eye and attention to detail. Each room is bursting with character, and full of antique furniture, contemporary art, and vintage trinkets.  

The distinctive living room has a large wood burning fireplace and plenty of games for the kids. There is also a sun room which is perfect for relaxing in with a book. The farmhouse kitchen is well equipped with a range of appliances and cooking essentials. Upstairs, the palatial main suite comes with an office for remote working, a living area with its own fireplace and coffee station, and a claw-footed bathtub in the bathroom. You can pick apples in autumn from your woodland (there are wellies at the house if it’s muddy!), go skiing and sledding in winter, or follow one of the nature trails leading to the creek. The village of Saugerties is a six-minute drive away, where you’ll find a grocery store, a farmer’s market and some laid back restaurants.

Tucked away near Tobyhanna State Park and with valleys, mountains and forests all a short drive away, this home is perfectly situated for the adventurous. While it has a rather basic interior, we think with a full roster of guests, you may not notice. Some of the bedrooms are also quite bare, but as a place to lay your head in between excursions around the state of Pennsylvania, they serve their purpose. There's also plenty here to keep kids entertained, with air hockey, table football, pool, table tennis and the projector all vying for their attention.
