And just like its surroundings, the building itself is steeped in history. Built in 1885, it boasts picturesque porches, hardwood floors and a crisp colour scheme. The kitchen is eye-catching with its bright green cabinets, and offers a bold contrast to the elegant Art Deco-inspired living area. Our favourite element, however, is the veranda. No trip to the southern states is complete without at least some of the relaxation taking place on a traditional covered porch, and this home offers a charming one where you can sit and while away the hours with a cool drink.

Located on the second floor of a restored wood-fronted home in the heart of Charleston’s Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighbourhood, this home boasts an enviable position and charming interiors. Exposed trusses add an element of drama to the whitewashed living area and, thanks to its open concept, it’s also a lovely space in which to relax and spend quality time as a group. The crisp colour scheme continues into the bedrooms, where metal bed frames and unique side tables offer the only contrast to the otherwise pristine, white interiors. A sweet summer’s day comes easy in this elegant, Georgian-style home. After a rejuvenating sleep in one of the lavish bedrooms, all you’ll want is to get out into the sun. We know that some people prefer sandy beaches while others like swimming pools, and we love that this home has both – a private, glassy pool out back and the beach just a stone’s throw away. The home also has an entertainment room and well-equipped bar to ensure that everyone gets their share of fun. Though with a golf course nearby and rest of the island playground, perhaps we didn’t even need to worry about that.

Just short walk away from the beach on Hilton Head Island, this villa is offers true coastal chic. Part of a community development, the home has access to basketball and tennis courts, but there are plenty of tournaments to be had in the house too, with a foosball table and swimming pool. The designated cook can whip up their meals of choice on the outdoor grill, with plenty of seating for most of the house on the patio, while upstairs you'll find a medium sized kitchen for light meals. For peace and quiet, there are several balconies for reading and the bedrooms are fitted with vintage style furnishings and four-poster beds, perfect for hiding away from the world. When you do feel like exploring, the area is rich in activities, with water-sports, walking trails, and cycle routes all easy to access from home.

After a long day of sun, sea and fun, we can see you sipping a Long Island iced tea on one of the deck chairs that have been thoughtfully set up by the lagoon, before enjoying a balmy evening dining on the terrace. Visit NoDa to see the city's diverse galleries and attempt to catch a performance at the Neighbourhood Theatre, which often hosts big-name artists. Stroll about town for a relaxing day out, looking at artisan gift shops and jewellery stores before stopping for a slice of pizza. For a soothing day, head to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, where you can listen to birds sing and see flowers bloom. The 7th Street Public Market captivates you in this food market and is great for a relaxed weekend day over coffee and pastries. With so much to do in the city, you'll never feel bored.

We love the idea of evening snuggles on the comfy sofa, with the fireplace gently crackling. Then there’s the kitchen, which is a wonder in itself – and a perfect place to leisurely rustle up a family meal, which can then be enjoyed at the gorgeous dining table.

There is also plenty of comfortable garden furniture out here – ideal for lazy afternoons or evening drinks under the stars.

We’ve got to hand it to this gorgeous home — or should we say mansion — on Hilton Head Island. As far as luxurious hideaways go, this one exudes class. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and within a two-minute walk of the beach, there is something deliciously magical about this place. We fell in love with the secluded palm-fringed swimming pools (one for the adults and one for the children). In fact, the leafy garden is something of a centrepiece, with balconies, terraces, and charming arched loggias all cleverly arranged to give maximum views over this delightful outside space. Find a peaceful corner to read a book, sip a cool drink before dinner or tuck into a family feast beneath the stars.
