Halfway between Pisa and Florence, San Miniato is one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany, and that’s saying something. It’s perched atop three hills overlooking the Arno valley, and the panoramas of the Tuscan hills live up to all expectations. The town centre is full of well-preserved medieval buildings, and has a particular concentration of churches – we’re particular fans of the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso. Every November, San Miniato holds a white-truffle festival (it’s one of the white-truffle centres of Italy), and once even supplied a record-breaking truffle to Dwight Eisenhower. Getting into the surrounding cities (Empoli nearby, as well as Florence and Pisa) is simple, either with a car or by direct train, but this part of the countryside is so charming that you could spend weeks on end here.
