There’s no lift here, as expected in a beautiful Liberty-style building, so you’ll need to climb stairs to reach the home. Still, it’s a small price to pay for the location. We love the second bedroom, accessed via a spiral staircase and oozing tranquillity – just watch your head on those sloping ceilings and beams. And when you’re ready to explore, many major sightseeing spots are within walking distance, while the Belfiore tram stop is nearby for jaunts further afield.

Looking for a characterful bolthole in the historic heart of Tuscany’s capital? This quintessential Florentine apartment should do nicely, set just two minutes from Piazza Santa Maria Novella and five from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. While the interiors are utterly charming, a home of this heritage does have its quirks. Expect to climb stairs to reach the third floor and a mezzanine space accessed via a small ladder that is unsuitable for young children. It’s also worth noting there's a double sofa bed here and only room for two around the kitchen table. However, there’s heaps of space to spill out in the main living room with those high ceilings and views of the piazza below.

It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.

Not many homes let you go sightseeing without even leaving the living room, but this apartment in the heart of Florence does – throw open the window and you're greeted by the sight of the 14th-century Orsanmichele's church. Your living quarters aren't quite as old, but there are a couple of more traditional features – including, look up, the patterned ceiling. A recent renovation has tastefully incorporated more contemporary aspects into the interior design and 21st-century travellers will find nothing to sniff at, especially when the fantastic central location is taken into consideration.

A Sprinkle of Magic

This apartment is a great base for a family or a group of friends visiting Florence. Situated close to all the historical sights, you can walk to landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, while good public transport connections mean that you can easily reach other parts of the city, too. Directly in front of the Baptistry of St John, High Lyric is about as central as it gets. Florence is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it’s hard to imagine a better place from which to explore. The flat’s a decent size, but while it can hold a maximum of four, there are several other places in the same building, also managed by Scott, so even if you’re in a larger group, you might be able to make it work.

You'll find this charming apartment right in the heart of Florence. All the main must-sees, from Palazzo Strozzi to the iconic Duomo, are within easy reach. Shops, restaurants, and a train station are also nearby – it certainly ticks the boxes for location. With moody blue hues and antique wooden windows, the design back home radiates romance. A snug little sitting area connects the lounge with the bedroom, a perfect spot for reading. We think it's an excellent size for two, though the kitchenette would be better suited for light snacks.

Renaissance Symphony

Found a short walk from the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and closer still to the market of Sant'Ambrogio, this apartment is ideal for getting around Florence. But it doesn't just tick the box on a central location, it also has all the modern charm to make a family stay comfortable. Though little ones might need supervision on the stairs up to the loft the rest of the home is all on the same level. Upstairs is where you'll find the laptop-friendly workspace and a breakout zone teens might enjoy. It could do with a little more natural light to highlight the exposed beams, but it's still cosy and well-kept.

Visiting Florence is always a good idea, and staying in this historic palazzo makes it all the more memorable. You’ll be in an incredible location, between the iconic Ponte Vecchio and  Ponte Santa Trinita – you can admire the four seasons statues from the living room windows.
