This apartment in a fifteenth-century building is a prime example of how this looks in practice. High ceilings and large windows (through some of which the Duomo can be spotted) make the interior feel bright and inviting, while being positioned above street level means that it's a little more peaceful than elsewhere in the building. While there are some period features — the fresco ceilings and the imposing oak front door — the apartment has been modernised in the ensuing six hundred years or so. The parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and mid-century style furniture in deep blues and greens are today's emblems of fine taste. We were sold on this Florentine apartment's private terrace alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the lofted living space. While both double bedrooms are charming, the last guest will have to make do with a sofa bed in the lounge, which is overlooked by the loft bedroom balcony above. So, while it's an impressive feature, it's not the most private space. Set in the characterful Santa Croce district, you're set back from the tourist traps immediately around the Duomo yet within easy walking distance of the must-see sights. Get off to a flying start at Piazza Santa Croce – it's just around the corner.

Just footsteps from the shop-lined medieval Ponte Vecchio Bridge, this apartment sits on the banks of the River Arno. Looking for a characterful bolthole in the historic heart of Tuscany’s capital? This quintessential Florentine apartment should do nicely, set just two minutes from Piazza Santa Maria Novella and five from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. While the interiors are utterly charming, a home of this heritage does have its quirks. Expect to climb stairs to reach the third floor and a mezzanine space accessed via a small ladder that is unsuitable for young children. It’s also worth noting there's a double sofa bed here and only room for two around the kitchen table. However, there’s heaps of space to spill out in the main living room with those high ceilings and views of the piazza below.

A simple, unflashy, but generally pleasant loft, Rush Hour’s main draw is its proximity to the Duomo. It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.

Florence's most famous landmarks are mere steps from this apartment. Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Signoria, Florence Cathedral, and plenty more are less than ten minutes away on foot. Of course, being in the heart of the city has its quirks. Noise is likely here, and a climb to the third floor is required as the building doesn't have a lift. But once inside, we reckon you'll appreciate the traditional features on offer. The open-plan living area has just enough room to decompress after sightseeing as well as a compact (yet well-appointed) kitchen to rustle up Italian dishes. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, though – fine for short stays, but may not suit everyone.
