Built into a slope, with three floors, this imposing period villa is a piece of Tuscan nostalgia. With shuttered windows, bedroom balconies and a top floor covered balcony for admiring the stunning views, it's a real slice of local life. The feel here is very lived-in, with each room boasting a unique character. None more so than the formal games room, painted a deep red, where you'll find a huge antique dining table, a chandelier and – of course – a suit of armour. Elsewhere, there are cool, neutral living spaces with exposed stone walls, a modern kitchen and enough bedrooms and bathrooms to give a large family or a big group of friends plenty of space. There's even a second kitchen in the annexe, so part of your group can have extra independence.

Dating back to the 17th century, there is an undeniable air of rustic charm to this villa near Arezzo (a thirty-five-minute drive away). As the sun sets over the surrounding hills, the stone facade practically glows against the landscape. You’ve got 80 acres of ground to explore, dotted with cypress trees, olive groves and peaceful woodland. Exploring every nook and cranny, you’ll stumble upon hammocks strung up between trees, outdoor lounges looking out over the rolling hills, a dining area beneath a wrought-iron gazebo and, of course, the turquoise pool in the terraced garden. Our favourite spot is the courtyard garden, bursting with potted flowers in a riot of colour.

Inside, it’s exactly what you expect from a historic home in the Italian hills. Ceilings are wooden with gnarled old beams, thick stone walls are pristine white and the time-worn terracotta floors look as though it has seen centuries of footsteps. Although it’s been completely renovated, there are still signs of the times gone by – the huge old hearth in the dining room, gilded mirrors and exposed stone walls. Antiques and book-filled cabinets add to that feeling of an old-world country retreat.

If you want to head out for a meal, the nearest restaurant is a ten-minute drive away, and the pretty medieval town of Monterchi is a further five minutes where you’ll find a selection of places to eat and shop for groceries.

Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still.

Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. When the warmth overwhelms you, take a cooling dip in the massive pool. In the evening you can savour wine and antipasti on the veranda or under the vine-wrapped pergola. If you get the itch to explore, a thirty-minute drive will take you to Siena where you can enjoy dining, shopping and sightseeing. 

The Vine Song

Elegant and unique, this home makes for an excellent base in Tuscany. It’s in the village of Impruneta on the outskirts of Florence, surrounded by countryside, olive groves and vineyards – it also borders the Chianti Classico region. The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. But for a break to Italy that feels a little like stepping back in time, it’s a great choice.

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.  


Verdant Valley

If you’re in search of a rustic getaway, this 18th-century home ticks all the right boxes. Surrounded by trees, the garden offers beautiful views, as well as a swimming pool (open seasonally), a barbecue and a wood-burning pizza oven. You’ll find the main house consists of two independent apartments, while the garden cottage has an additional two bedrooms – providing plenty of space for groups to spread out and enjoy quality time together. Some of the furnishings are a little dated, but there’s plenty of charm and character. It’s also just a short drive from the picturesque hilltop town of Cortona (2.5 kilometres away), while the nearest amenities are also just a short drive away.
