The building is one of the oldest in Mayfair – in 1821, famed Buckingham Palace architect Thomas Cubbit extended it – and you can see the character, history and period details in every room. It feels like a home you want to linger in, with new surprises waiting at every turn. We love the antique furniture – a clawfoot desk here, a fauteuil armchair there – but the smart kitchen, stylish bathroom and mod-cons like a rainfall shower, espresso machine and Netflix bring things in the 21st-century. We think it's the best of both worlds, and the location is even better.

There's no doubt this is an enviable spot, close to restaurants, pubs and cafes. Both Paddington Station and the lively Notting Hill are within walking distance, and with Lancaster Gate station right on your doorstep, getting around the rest of London is an easy feat. It takes less than twenty minutes to arrive at the green, open spaces of Hyde Park, and if you want to visit the bright lights of central London then it's only a fifteen-minute journey away on the Tube.

Not only does this home have an enviable postcode in London’s famous Notting Hill neighbourhood, but it’s in a classic white-columned townhouse typical of the area too. Rare for this part of London, there are two private roof terraces and two balconies lined with classic wrought-iron railings, so you can enjoy meals outside and cocktails overlooking the leafy green street below. Inside, you’ve got high ceilings and long French windows leading to the outdoor spaces from every room. The decor is modern and plush, with faux fur blankets draped across tufted velvet sofas and ottomans. The main bedroom in cherry-blossom pink has a bed fit for royalty, and French windows opening out onto a private balcony with a suspended egg chair. Then there are the little details, like the mezzanine snug for family movie nights and laptop-friendly desks in both bedrooms.

In terms of location, you’re a ten-minute walk from the antique stalls of the famous Portobello Road. While restaurant-lined Westbourne Grove with its fine-dining establishments and trendy eateries galore is just five minutes away on foot. For a bit of greenery, the sprawling expanse of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park is a fifteen-minute stroll away too.

People can often be daunted when it comes to incorporating colour into interior design, but this Notting Hill apartment shows how it can be done without going over the top.

The mustard and green furnishings in the living room are instantly uplifting and go nicely with the weathered wood of the coffee table. The addition of two arched window mirrors helps accentuate the plentiful amount of natural light that comes in through the large windows. Elsewhere, the kitchen in a deep shade of green has plenty of sleek surface space for preparing home-cooked dinners, while the bathrooms play it comparatively safer with the dazzlingly white tiles.

The fact that we've got this far without mentioning the home's incredible location is a testament to the quality of the interior. The bottom of Portobello Road can be reached in ten minutes' walk, as can Holland Park and Kensington Gardens.

Jade & Gold

Ranged at the top of a mid-Victorian mansion, this stylish penthouse is the ideal base for anyone looking to explore well-heeled West London. The neutral colour palette is soothing and sophisticated, while patterned wallpaper adds personality to each of the bedrooms. Pick up the best of the best produce at Harrods Food Halls, less than a ten-minute walk away, and cook up gastronomic delights in the well-appointed kitchen. A private balcony overlooks London’s evocative skyline; sip your morning coffee as the sun breaks through the clouds. Spend afternoons quaffing cocktails in Belgravia’s sought-after destinations or tour some of the capital’s finest collections – the Victoria and Albert, Science and Natural History Museums are reached in a leisurely twenty minutes by foot. When you’re ready to turn it up a notch, jump on the tube to Theatreland and Soho for a night you’ll never forget.

Up Above Belgravia

There were a lot of features about this home that we really loved. While it is a fairly small space, it has been thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind, and your host is also one of the loveliest people we have had the pleasure to meet. The interiors do have a contemporary feel, with the Andy Warhol photography adding character. Accessed via a ladder-style staircase, the bedroom here is on a mezzanine level, so you'll have to be prepared for some mid-stay climbing. The surrounding location is idyllic, with a bohemian vibe and within easy reach of the coveted Notting Hill.

Cotton Cocoon

With its all-white interior design and tranquil views of Inverness Terrace, White Doves is a peaceful home. A beautiful Bayswater sanctuary (just steps away from Hyde Park), it’s one of those places that you look forward to coming home to at the end of a long day of sightseeing. We can’t get over all the period features – the picture-perfect crown moulding and the charming windows being our favourite parts. On top of that, Jane is also a wonderful host, who’s put a lot of care into designing a seamless space filled with a welcoming atmosphere.
