Top 20 Gowanus, New York vacation rentals & luxury serviced apartments
Gowanus takes its name from the Gowanus Canal, the industrial waterway that runs through the middle of the neighbourhood, and which is flanked by old warehouse buildings and construction sites. This former manufacturing district is changing quickly though - many of the warehouses have been converted into loft apartments, and the once-quiet stretch of 3rd Avenue now boasts a smattering of hip bars and restaurants. A Whole Foods store also recently opened on the border of Gowanus and its smarter neighbour, Park Slope. Changes are even in store for the canal itself: it’s in the process of a decade-long cleanup process, a clean-up that was desperately needed. Gowanus still retains a slightly gritty feel in places and some of the unavoidable realities of it being an active industrial neighbourhood do remain, but it's got an exciting, burgeoning art scene and lots of charm in amidst the grit.
