Stay in an architect’s vision of a house on Barbados’ Platinum Coast. This colonial-style house was designed as a holiday home by and for renowned architect Oliver Messel. You can feel the detail from an architect’s eye in the coral columns and stone-hewn bookshelves in the grand living room. Shelves and dressers are adorned with driftwood and shells, a reminder of your location by the beach. A direct path leads to the caster-sugar sand of Mullins Bay and the charming cafes, shops and rum shacks of Speightstown are within walking distance too.

From the open living and dining room, French doors lead to the covered terrace, which feels just like an extension of the home with ferns and yucca adorning the lounge area. There’s a dining table surrounded by trailing botanica out here too. The phrase 'a stone's throw' is overused to the point of cliche, but for this villa, we'll make an exception – even those not terribly skilled at ball games would be able to lob a stone from this home's garden and hit the golden sands of Gibbes Beach. It really is that close.

This proximity to the Bajan coast also brings some rather calming views of the deep azure Caribbean Sea from the terrace, which benefits from a hot tub in case you want to catch the sunset from the comfort of bubbling waters. When you can manage to prise yourself away to give your living quarters a little closer inspection, you'll find some of the sleekest interior design to be seen anywhere on the island, with a wealth of natural light, clean lines and sleek surfaces throughout the rooms. Even the path to the entrance is made rather glamorous thanks to the addition of a lily pond running underneath.

While you can find plenty of Bajan homes that are classical in style, there aren't too many that look to modernism for inspiration – that's what makes this striking home built by a local architect half a century ago and recently renovated all the more special.

Inside, you'll find high vaulted ceilings, spiral staircases and a soothing colour palette of bright whites and neutrals. The taste in furnishings is understated but chic, while the kitchen packed full of appliances and bathrooms both lie on the contemporary end of things.

This being the Caribbean, you're probably wondering what's happening outside. Well, the swimming pool in the middle of the gardens is sure to be appreciated during the summer months, as will the covered terrace complete with an alfresco dining table and barbecue ready for feasts.
