This is one super cool coastal pad. We love the stylish and laid-back design of this home that its surfer owners have lovingly crafted. Your hosts' personality really comes through elements such as the wall-mounted clock collection, the reclaimed wood wardrobe doors and the self-build spirit on show in the jungle garden. Here, they've repurposed corrugated steel panels to divide the space, built homemade garden furniture and even managed to fit in an artist studio caravan. There's even a fire pit for cosy evenings. The standout feature has got to be its proximity to gorgeous Venice Beach, an easy fifteen-minute amble away. Surf's up, so what are you waiting for!

Venice Beach and its famous boardwalk is a five-minute walk from your beautiful bungalow, while Santa Monica Beach is just over two miles away. It's perched right by the water in Marina Del Rey, and thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you'll be treated to non-stop ocean vistas no matter the time of day. A private balcony is ideal for alfresco sundowners and watching the hustle and bustle of the marina. Head inside, and you can lounge in the bright living area or gaze further afield with the telescope. There are a few quirks here, though. The main bedroom is open to the living space below, and the blinds don't block out the sunlight. We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

This modern retreat is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your Californian getaway. There’s a large garden with a dining area, grill, fire pit, and outdoor shower, while inside is light and bright thanks to sliding patio doors. You can park your car in the secure carport here and if you don’t feel like driving, your host provides two bicycles for free to explore the area. In the locale, you’ll find a range of restaurants, cafes, and Penmar Park or visit beautiful Venice Beach.

This cute and quirky cottage-like home embraces the irreverent spirit of its Venice Beach location. It’s close to great shopping on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, tonnes of great restaurants and bars, and of course, the beach (which is a fifteen-minute walk or three-minute drive).

The first thing you’ll notice is the mural of orange and yellow pansies, practically bursting off the walls outside. Stepping inside, it’s a riot of colour, from the mosaic-covered dining table to the tufted green velvet sofa. Shelves are teeming with books in the dining area and the kitchen has a sunny farmhouse feel with a big range-style cooker and wooden breakfast table in the centre. There’s a little shared garden out the back too, brimming with lush greenery and a cute stone water feature.

It’s easy to forget how big LA is, and that even places in Venice might be a half-hour walk from the beach. Hertford Union overlooks the canals, and the sea is less than five minutes away on foot. It’s big, the kind of thing that naturally comes to mind when you think of LA. There are white walls, terraces, greenery, exposed wood. It’s also kept in wonderful condition, and you can see that this is a matter of pride for the hosts, Trevor and Lauren.

Located in vibrant Venice, just a fifteen-minute walk from the beach and countless great shops and restaurants, this has got to be amongst our most aspirational, Instagramable homes. You're just a couple of minutes walk from the bustling Abbot Kinney Boulevard. This mile-long stretch of independent shops and enticing eateries has plenty going on. It really comes to life on the first Friday of each month, when the boulevard is given over to a street festival filled with live music and food trucks. You're less than a mile from the bodybuilders and bohemians that frequent the vibrant Venice Boardwalk, which you can follow north to Santa Monica and up as far as Pacific Palisades.

Why not cycle over to the Venice Beach Boardwalk and see where the day takes you – if you’re very dedicated, you can reach stunning Malibu in just under two hours.

This fabulously soulful studio apartment won us over the minute we crossed the threshold. It feels fresh and modern inside, packed with character, and has a delightful jungle garden. We love the reclaimed wood sliding doors that separate the calming bedroom from the rest of the living space. The creative, self-build spirit of the doors continues in the shared outdoor space, with its use of corrugated steel panels to divide the area, homemade garden furniture and even an artist studio caravan. Exploring the neighbourhood on foot couldn't be easier – it's a mere fifteen-minute amble to the beach and even closer to Abbott Kinney Boulevard, with all its hip shops and eateries, while there are bikes for you to explore further. So, while it's true that Venice is undergoing a bit of a transformation, your hosts are striving to keep Venice weird!

Beachy, rustic, chic and peaceful – this apartment is as cute as can be.  Small yet cosy, the home is beautifully designed for a romantic getaway or solo trip. And we're swooning over the Japanese-style cedar hot tub out front – it's the perfect spot to relax with a drink and a book at the end of the day, and more than makes up for the lack of a sofa. We know where we'd rather spend our time. Located on a quiet street in Venice, you're removed from the buzz but plenty close to the action. So, while the cute kitchen contains everything you'd need, there are so many culinary choices nearby, it's tempting to let someone else take care of the cooking – you're on holiday, after all. This is the ultimate relaxing getaway.

The third bedroom may be a little tight and the day bed is in a communal space, but they’re great options if you’re visiting with little ones. Located in the garden of the owner's main house, you have your own private entrance to come and go as you please. It's just as well, as this home is ideally placed to enjoy the best Venice has to offer. In no more than a fifteen-minute walk, you can be strolling past the quirky characters that inhabit Venice's iconic boardwalk, as well as the mulling over which of the plentiful nearby restaurants and bars you're going to head to later along Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Favourites include Venice mainstay, The Tasting Kitchen for cracking cocktails, and chef Evan Funke's Felix, which serves up some of the best pizza and pasta on the West Coast. Fancy exploring further afield? Hire a bike and pedal-power yourself to the storied Santa Monica Pier in less than twenty minutes, or up to Pacific Palisades in half an hour.
